Cannon Shock Waves in Ultra Slow Motion - Smarter Every Day 200

I was reminded this morning about how much I appreciate you.  I believe I experienced distribution issues because I originally posted this video with the term "Civil War" in the title.  Let's just say things didn't distribute properly.  I made the scary decision to delete the video from YouTube and re-upload.  This is scary because as a person who makes videos on YouTube, your biggest fear is to "upset the algorithm".  When I reuploaded, it only distributed in 360P, which made me think I may have uploaded the version I create to submit to the copyright office... which led to a third upload.  Let's just say it was a rough morning.  Because YouTube revenue is directly tied to views, man it makes me feel infinitely more comfortable knowing that you as a Patron have my back whether a video gets 1,000 views or 1,000,000.  Thanks for giving me that peace of mind.  That being said, check it out!  I figured out how to visualize shockwaves using a technique called "fast frame differencing".

Quite the contrary, I support nothing political - I just don't care. I know that, to the politically incensed, it seems an impossibility. But, there are those meant for fighting political battles in this world, and those meant for solving other problems. I'm the latter. Flags don't affect me, personally. So, in the absence of a bleeding heart, or a bias toward either political pole, I just don't care. I'd much rather focus on problems to which I can actually solve. BUT, I get your point - you not only have a right to argue your point, but it appears to be something that perhaps still plagues this world that we live in. It just doesn't plague my local world. There's plenty of diversity where I live, in particular...most of my friends and coworkers are of various cultures and backgrounds...and I just don't see it here...or anywhere around here. I'm sure racism exists elsewhere...but it just isn't my problem or those of all of my multicultural friends who explicitly agree. My point was simply this: I agree that, if you see flags inciting social problems, fight it and stand up for those who can't. But, in THIS forum, it's just inappropriate - this is not a political forum. I just personally see correlative link between a historical flag and MODERN DAY social problems. But, perhaps you have raw evidence to the contrary. With that, I'll bow out of the debate. But, stand up for what you believe...just please consider the choice of venue in terms of appropriateness.

Chris, I don't think you are a Neo-Nazi or a Racist and I appreciate you engaging with us all here. We're all patrons of Destin's work so let's assume that we both have good intentions. That said, I'm reacting to the contents of a video in the thread of that video. This seems like exactly the place to discuss what's in the video. If the video touches other issues in the world that aren't science, that should be open to discussion too. Additionally, asking me to shut down discussion here because you've decided it's political (though I strived to stay with a historical perspective) is also a political statement: you're saying that you believe the issues raised in my post aren't valid and you support the status quo. But the status quo has political values attached to it too.

Nick Vance

I'm aware. Speaking as someone from the South, it's not as Neo-Nazi, racist as you think. I don't have one. But, the point is this: THIS is not the forum to go on about political nonsense like that. I'm sure this channel was meant for much higher aims than even broaching the topic of politics. Besides...it was a reenactment. I think you need to post in a political forum. It's all science and engineering here. Thank you for calling.

Neuroskynet

Thanks for your comments Jayton. To be clear I'm not asking for Destin to prosthelytize in hostile territory. But some comment about it from his office would be appropriate to splice into the video. You are correct that people have the right to fly the flag on private property. Thank you for clarifying that. I'm not disputing the legality of these symbols. Finally, I don't think using the term redneck helps the debate here as it could be construed as an insult. Let's say "field full of people with differing opinions and cannons" instead. :)

Nick Vance

Chris, it's not in the past if people are flying the flag right now. They must have some reason they're still supporting the Confederacy. It's worth thinking about critically: why do you think that it's a popular symbol still?

Nick Vance

Omg this literally blew my mind :O

Focusing on flags, you are missing the entire point of the video. Not everyone has to have the same reaction to symbolism. Some of us don't care about that. Some people just like to focus on the science snd engineering. Growing up here in Texas, I don't even think about that or slavery or any other factors that exists long, long ago. It might as well be exactly what it is - ancient history. And I know there may be comments about the relative recency of those events. But, honestly, it is in the past...get over it...move on. There is physics going on here, focus on that, or else you are likely on the wrong channel. If everyone has to get bent out of shape over the sight of a flag, we all just become brainwashed sheep embroiled in some political nonsense. To the comments above, fight your own battles, but the rest of us love Destin's videos and the intent behind them to educate and inspire...none of it political.

Neuroskynet

I disagree. I believe wholeheartedly that this aspect of the video should be ignored completely, and that Destins personal opinion on this matter should remain separate from this video, as long as that's what he feels is best. While I don't condone the use of the confederate flag symbol lightly, (and I say lightly, because I do still believe in its right to fly on non-public property), and I don't subscribe to any of the ideals that it stood for then or stands for now, I do understand that it is not the responsibility of every person to belt out their opinion at the mere sight of the flag no matter the time or place, much less start rambling about it during a historical weapon showcase on a science and engineering channel. In this setting, in this context, there would be no point, nor would it do any good. It would be akin to an Athiest walking into a Catholic church during the Christmas Day Mass and beginning to preach his ideals from the pews, or storming into an abortion clinic and trying to convince all the patients of the sins they are committing. Even if your ideals and opinions are well founded and sound, they won't do a thing when thrown against a brick wall. There is no need to evangelize every opinion you have simply because you believe them to be justified. I don't say this because I wish to lessen the importance of the issue, nor do I believe we should tread so lightly as to not offend anybody, I just understand when arguments will yield intelligent discussion and critical thought. Talking about it in a field full of rednecks and cannons on Smarter Every Day won't do a darn thing.

Jayton Hawkins

Personally I love the fact that the uniforms or flags were completely invisible to me and I only saw the beautiful science & engineering on display, along with the spirit of reenactment guys making it all happen

Invisible Jazz

Destin, I'm a fan of your work and appreciated the physics in the video as well as the context about the damage these kinds of weapons can do to a human body. I'm thankful for the background that these discussions provide beyond just slow-motion footage. However, I feel like there was some wider context that was missing in this video: you neglected to dig into the fact that many of the people you featured in the video were wearing Confederacy military garb. I also saw some Confederate flags in the background. Let me make an analogy: The Axis powers supported Fascism and fought against the USA in WWII. Imagine you were checking out the cannons on a gunboat from Imperial Japan. While interviewing people wearing their military garb and flying their flag, wouldn't it also be worth digging in to that history and condemning the ideals of Fascism? The Confederacy supported Slavery and fought against the USA in the Civil War. I don't think that that is a fact that you should ignore. So, while I don't see your video as an endorsement of the Confederacy, I would have liked to see you address the historical context and condemn the ideals of the Confederacy. Thank you.

Nick Vance

Here I am watching the amazing patterns in the fire/smoke of the powder burning and THEN Destin points out the super awesome shock waves and how the carriages absorb the recoil... Now I have to watch the video at least 2 more times. I feel like you have to go back and redo a few videos now that you have that shiny new toy to play with

Clifton Ballad

Keep up the great work! (And for those who somehow missed it .. you should check out his co-podcast "No Dumb Questions" always entertaining.)

I wondered why I saw this video show up on Youtube only to disappear 3 mins later .. I assumed you did a pre-upload but forgot to make it private until you were ready to make it live.

I'm glad to hear that you are doing more videos on these. Because I was kinda disappointed at first that it was just going to be a 'slow mo guys' video but on your channel. I enjoy when you get deep into the physics and math. But always enjoy your content. Thanks

When your distribution platform is more dangerous than the science you're doing, you must be doing your science right.

Rosuav

BOOM!

Robert Keiser

Fast frame differencing blew my mind!! That all that imagery can be bought out from the footage is awesome!! Thank you destin

Thomas Bellingham

Loved it! It is awesome seeing the shockwaves. There were like 3 or 4 phases to this video, and I enjoyed every phase!

Jeff Dzado

Amazing video, thanks so much for taking so much time to create such inspiring and educational content! :D This is why I'm a patron, keep up the great work!
