Dominoes - HARDCORE Mode - Smarter Every Day 182

I enjoyed the video. I was impressed with your teams persistence and dedication. Setting up that experiment again and again had to take some serious willpower. Also, where can I get a "Adventure Til Death" T-shirt? Cheers!

Louis D. Monaghan, Jr.

An idea for improving your setup. Buy or make a motor driven sled and attach a stick to it so that the sled starts the dominos. That way you will always have perfect footage.

Thanks very much for both the replies. Do we know when such a system will reach steady state motion?

If the line is long enough you will eventually reach steady state motion.

Made the line so long that it doesn't matter anymore.

I am just curious. Did we actually solve the problem of the initial force? Isn't that varying if it's a human hand? Could a possible solution be to have an identical mechanical force each time.

It was fun to see the result of the data I helped generate. I’m glad to hear we patrons gave you accurate stuff! While entering data, I noticed that the dominoes spun more than I expected, and it is neat to see the effect it had on the velocity. Thanks for a high-quality video.

This was really cool! I was one of the patrons that helped out, so it's awesome to see the final product.

Great video, Destin. So, you did solicit multiple crowd sources to gather the data after all. :) Totally agree with your comment about people asking simple questions in meetings being favorites. In the corporate world of nearly non-stop virtual conference calls, I continually see such questions lead to rethinking process designs and ultimately improving things. Meanwhile others are too sheepish to ask what they were wondering about. Ask the questions people, please! :)

This is one of the more exciting videos. I love the science in "Basic" stuff, so keep them coming :-D

It's a clock.

Could you get around the moving camera timing issue if you could (in theory) move the camera a large distance away and use a telephoto lens? I know tele lenses and high speed cameras don't play nicely due to light availability, but if you were able to overcome that in the future, you should also be able to overcome a significant portion of the perspective issue with the dominoes, eliminating the variable of the moving camera?

What is this flashing thing, hanging in the corner of your world map?

"Last Man Standing" domino - that's incredible! I'm with Jake - one of my favorites; maybe even 1st/favorite, full-stop. Simple->complicated, chain reactions, unseen things that become noticeable on a closer look...I see many teaching moments & even sermon illustrations in this! I'm glad to be one of your patrons, Destin.

One of my favorite videos you've done

How many takes did you have to do to get that half-court shot?
