Some Thoughts About Tape Week #1 [Bonus Video]
Added 2023-07-13 19:53:35 +0000 UTCHey Patrons!
It's been a busy week around these parts. Not only did we announce our tape archiving project but our documentary on IMMORTALITY came out and our Vampire Survivors doc is in Early Access awaiting full release next week.
That said I wanted to take a moment to talk about the first week of the tape archive project - what the feedback has been like, our plans for releasing the videos, game-tapes like shows and so on. It seemed like a good idea to just sit down and let you know as much as I could but if you have any follow up questions please stick them in the comments and I'll answer as they come in.
Thanks so much for your support over the past week, it's been terrific seeing so much positively and excitement around the tapes. This is gonna be a wild ride, and I'm really glad so many of you are along for it.

Hi Dani. I'm maybe a bit late for this and I'm not fully immersed on what you are doing to restore the tapes. I know that museums doesn't show everything that they have, they rotate the exhibitions to preserve stuff, so the displays always change. However you can access the stuff for research if you ask. The idea is, with this same philosophy, you can create the archive with the raw conversion. You can then edit and filter the hours of video into a 15 minutes video with the things that you find important. Then somebody else can grab the same hours of tapes and edit them into their 15 mins of video and that will be their work. Maybe somebody with experience working in museums or archives can give you a better insight on how to properly organize this. Thanks for the work you are doing!

2023-08-09 17:57:00 +0000 UTCWow. It's been a busy couple weeks for me, and finally got a chance to check back in with NoClip to see what's going on. Apparently, quite a lot. Can't believe so much footage has already been posted. Let's go!

2023-07-17 04:42:35 +0000 UTCThanks for all of this Danny! The Game Tapes idea had crossed my mind very early on when you brought this up. It would be cool if you could coordinate Jeff/Nextlander for a full The Hotspot crew to do a session. That said, I think that's a big logistical challenge. So my 2 cents are maybe think of casual game tapes streams opportunistically. Keeping it as low effort as possible since I feel you got a lot on your plate already. Separately though, it might be interesting to do a curator series with those involved in the tapes or the games to see them and give some historical perspective. Especially if you do a who 'dump' of a topic as you mentioned in this video. Just another random thought/suggestion. Once you get into your flow of things. Cheers!

2023-07-15 16:09:06 +0000 UTCYea on YouTube we do that to get access to the higher bit rates. we upload them in 1080 on archive 👍

2023-07-15 16:00:05 +0000 UTCOut of interest then and I think maybe you answered this already but the reason some of the videos are 4k when the original source was not close to that is to get the higher bit rate? Also how awesome would it be when this is all done if we have a collection of all the Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo E3 press conferences at source quality going right back to the early 2000's.

2023-07-15 11:52:14 +0000 UTCHah, yea the problem was that around that time myself and Frank both moved to places with much less favorable internet speed/upload caps at that exact same time. I am planning on spinning that back up in a few months when we (possibly move) studios.

2023-07-14 00:24:01 +0000 UTCWas literally going to comment on this the other day but forgot and you beat me to it. :P Also really liked the idea of the gameplay channel existing and would love to see it continue to be maintained. That's a really cool resource for people.

2023-07-13 23:38:29 +0000 UTCI'm having a lot of fun watching these tapes. The Infinity Ward tour was fun for me, having spent a lot of time with that era of CoD. On the point of preservation and putting this stuff out there for others to use and have fun with - I was recently looking through your gameplay archive channel and noticed that the last upload over a year ago now. Any plans to keep that idea alive? I'll admit that other than scrobbling through a couple of games just to see what your footage is like I haven't spent a lot of time with the channel, but I really liked the stated idea of uploading all of the footage you have laying around anyway and I was a little sad to see no recent uploads.

2023-07-13 22:52:45 +0000 UTCLoved this. This video encapsulates why I signed up to be a Patron when NoClip launched. To your point Danny, it feels validating to have supported for years and so many are showing up to give the recognition NoClip has, is, and will always deserve. This is another of those moments that, from my perspective, NoClip keeps getting more attention: The DOOM series, the story of Final Fantasy XIV's rebirth, the full Witcher series, Fallout 76 (Before we knew what was to come), Hades: Developing Hell (which can be said about those Blu-rays... eh? Eh?... I'll see myself out)... Super jazzed about the project. Keep up the awesome work! P.S. Excellent puppetry for the Vampire Survivors doc! Brought a smile to my face, every time.

2023-07-13 22:50:12 +0000 UTCI think there are some compelling stories to be told around broad industry trends of the past. I'm hoping that noclip will be able to leverage these old videos to tell those stories in an easily digestible form. The reason I signed up was because of the quality of the documentaries you've put out and I'm looking forward to what comes from this.
