Patron Q&A - CALL FOR QUESTIONS
Added 2023-01-25 15:01:00 +0000 UTC
Hey Patrons!
It's been a little while since we've done the classic Q&A video so I thought it would be a good excuse to get some feedback on how we're doing and what you'd like to see from Noclip in 2023.
So please stick your questions / thoughts / comments / concerns in the comments section below and I'll answer as many of them as I can in a video later this week.
Cheers!
Danny

It was mentioned that you might be doing a documentary dedicated to the Legacy of Kain series, following up from the Crystal Dynamics one. Is that true? Is any of that planned out currently?

2023-01-29 14:31:08 +0000 UTCHi guys, I hope you're doing well. 1. With the announcement of Supergiant Games working on Hades 2, have you considered/discussed with them the option of doing a follow up to Developing Hell? 2. What is the current status of the Blu-Ray release of the Developing Hell series?
David Vooght
2023-01-27 23:49:16 +0000 UTC5 random things : 1. How are you doing ? 2. Will you make more docs on old games on top of greatest hits ? You already covered many like half life, elder scrolls, thief an UT but many other classics like might and magic, diablo (1!), duke nukem 3D, splinter cell chaos theory or even snes games like castlevania. But I understand it’s time consuming and developers are hard to find after many years. 3. Why not an occasional movie, tv series or even book review or discussion? Might seem off brand but I feel the team would be great at it. Not an official thing but maybe an oddball podcast here and there when you feel like it. I think many would enjoy that. 4. Heard of the podcast the Rewatchables with Bill Simmons ? Idea : podcasts (or videos on crew channel) vaguely similar : the replayables. Games that we go back to play time and again. Discussions and categories that examine why they’re replayable. 5. Finally : great great end of year podcasts. Lists are everywhere but they’re fun ! Why not something similar on old games on occasion ? Best pc games of the 90s, picks by each team member. Top 5 games of 2003 or whatever. Nothing too serious. Would enjoy that. In any case, great job overall and all the best to you and the entire team. Whatever you do, we patrons have your back. Take care !

2023-01-27 04:09:02 +0000 UTCA few months back you brought up that you were working on new designs for Noclip clothing and stickers. How is that coming? I would love to get my hands on some new Noclip gear!

2023-01-26 15:18:55 +0000 UTCWould you be able to look into an Introversion Software doc, likely remote because they're UK-based. And possibly a doc on GRIS from Nomada Studio.

2023-01-26 12:26:29 +0000 UTCReally appreciate all the work you and the team have done over the years. 2022 was a real banger for the channel! Firstly, I'm sure this has come up more than once over the years, but a retrospective on Hello Games, and No Man's Sky in particular would be fascinating. I'd love to hear Sean and Co. take on how everthing went down post launch, and I think if he was willing to open up to anybody about it, it would be No Clip. Second; every consider doing a retrospective on the Castlevania series? The NES games ruled my life and kicked my ass like nothing else in the late 80's and early 90's. The first Castlevania for NES is truly one of the hardest fucking games I've ever played, and I've still not even come close to beating it. Anyway, thanks again!

2023-01-26 10:50:35 +0000 UTCJust watched it. Highly recommended. That place seems to operate more like the Church of Scientology than an actual game studio. Fascinating and infuriating.

2023-01-26 10:02:57 +0000 UTCHas it become easier to get a hold of developers since you've started and gained some notoriety? What's the biggest challenge when contacting them?

2023-01-26 07:57:11 +0000 UTCCan you guys do something with the makers of the Steamworld games? They keep putting banger after banger and would be very interesting to learn more about their studio

2023-01-26 04:56:23 +0000 UTCJeff Gerstmann did a segment on his podcast where he interviewed Mike Mika and spoke about Atari 50 and the state of video game preservation. I'd love to see NoClip cover preservation efforts on a regular basis. There have been some monumental amounts of work done recently to emulate difficult consoles like the Saturn, PS3 and Jaguar; it would be cool to see that sort of stuff highlighted. EDIT: To rephrase this as a question, "could you, or are you, planning to cover more games preservation stuff?"

2023-01-26 03:41:31 +0000 UTCYall have been doing great! Keep up the good work.

2023-01-26 01:56:50 +0000 UTCMan, I would love to see you guys dive deep in to the career of Mick Gordon! I appreciate that there's bullets flying in that little corner of the industry at the moment, and that conflict journalism is not your style (I go to People Make Games for that, and I love you both equally), but do you think it would be possible in a year or two when things have died down a little? To be fair, I would love to see the same with Darren Korb, but you've already covered quite a bit of that in your Hades docs. Not enough for me but... I'm probably more ravenous for his talent than most.

Graeme Harris
2023-01-26 01:24:20 +0000 UTCDo you plan on doing more docs of large, professional quality fan-made expansions/remakes? Two that I would be interested in, given the recent Thief and Gloomwood coverage, are The Dark Mod and Thief 2X.

2023-01-25 23:24:29 +0000 UTCHiya Danny! In light of all the recent layoffs that have hit games media, not just recently but across a large portion of 2022, in a broad sense, how stable is NoClip currently and what projections of growth do you and the team see for 2023 and beyond? I've been loving the updates and the videos, from the main docs and the stuff on NoClip Crew while occasionally watching the podcast here and there, so to you and the team: Please keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to an exciting 2023 for NoClip!

2023-01-25 23:09:51 +0000 UTCHey Danny! Would it be possible to do an updated studio tour?
Michael Rinne
2023-01-25 22:18:40 +0000 UTCHey Danny, as always thank you for all that you do! One of my favorite things NoClip has done in the past is quick little developer interviews about their works and the hot topics of the industry. Are there any plans for stuff like that in the future?
Andrew McCann
2023-01-25 21:46:01 +0000 UTCwould you interview dunkey and leah about big mode? think it'd be funnnn.... publisher breakdown?

2023-01-25 21:14:14 +0000 UTCYou mentioned a few times that you've never really played the Silent Hill franchise. What are some seminal video games / video game series you've missed the boat on? And is there any reason you don't pick them up now? (Other than the obvious reasons - time, to many games, etc.)

2023-01-25 19:27:58 +0000 UTCHow stable are you finding the Patreon funding model at this stage?

2023-01-25 19:24:11 +0000 UTCAre there any specific plans for using the studio space to film with Non NoClip Employee's?

2023-01-25 18:57:27 +0000 UTCHow much of your brain budget is spent on how to grow (or stabilize) the Patreon subs and keeping track of those analytics?

2023-01-25 17:35:22 +0000 UTCThanks for all the hard work you’ve put in over the years. I’ve been following your work since the GameSpot days I’m glad to see you still in the game (pun intended) and still independent. My first request is, take a breath, I can see this work takes its toll, I think you’ve talked quite openly and personally about it, but for a moment enjoy your success :) My second request is a couple of questions to you “what, in your documentary making, continues to surprise you about game development/ publishing” and “what has or still makes you get out of the bed each day and do the work you do”.

2023-01-25 17:09:17 +0000 UTCI'm a fan of Bitmap Books (the company that makes and releases books covering the history of various games/game consoles). You think you could do a documentary on how that company was founded, the research steps they have to take, and the hurdles they have to overcome to get a book published? They recently had to cancel publishing "Mega Drive Visual Compendium" because Sega threatened them with legal action. So I think there's meat for interesting content about all the potential challenges they have when trying to release a book.

2023-01-25 17:06:28 +0000 UTCWith Ken and Roberta Williams releasing their first game in over two decades, have you ever thought about an all-encompassing doc covering Sierra On-Line in a manner similar to what you did with CDPR? They're definitely one of the first major "Insta-buy if the label is on the box" game developers and publishers from the time they formed in the 80s to when they sorta... got bought out and died as a company in like 1999? The company and the many folks who worked there and at their sister company Dynamix (many of whom I have personal connections with for interviews smirksmirk) have some incredible stories to tell :) Curious if you've ever considered this for the doc slate?

2023-01-25 16:47:07 +0000 UTCI'd like to see more deep dives in the the technical details of a game and how a developer solved problems like in the Alien isolation video.
David Molloy
2023-01-25 16:11:51 +0000 UTCHave you found any major differences or unexpected challenges producing documentaries of games at different stages in their development/lifecycle? For example, does covering a game early in development present difficulties that you wouldn’t get covering a 20 year-old game? Bonus question: Are Arsenal winning the league?
Liam Fitzgerald
2023-01-25 16:11:08 +0000 UTCSo, when are you going to start publishing games? 😅
ApeinhisApex
2023-01-25 15:58:46 +0000 UTCI imagine this is probably out of your control at this point but I will still go ahead and ask if you have any timeline on when the Hades blu ray will start to be sold (I know the page is up on Fangamer)?

2023-01-25 15:56:54 +0000 UTCFile this one under 'comments or concerns'. Putting this here since I can't attend the production meeting: please, *please* do not allow ads of any kind near Noclip content. I understand this is a tough one, but stick to your guns. Ads are a radioactive toxin that slowly (but surely) corrupt all things. Ads incentivize things that - in my opinion - are the opposite of what makes Noclip special. You care about quality, story, people, and meaning. I sound like a raving old person standing on a box in the town square, but don't give in :-).

2023-01-25 15:52:51 +0000 UTCWith all the upsets in the games media space I'm down for even more *fun* at noclip with the whole Crew. I love what's been on the Crew channel and I hope to see more let's play one offs (or series???) In the future that are purely things y'all wanna play or are relevant to Noclip. Do you think that more regular let's play style content will hit the channel? Unrelated, and I'm just being impatient: when dat Hades Blu-ray gon' hit? 🙏🏻

2023-01-25 15:47:18 +0000 UTCI know the ongoing pandemic might complicate this idea, bit have you considered a meet-and-greet for NoClip patrons? Even if it's just for Bay Area locals. At the very least, I'm hoping to meet with the NoClip crew at GDC this year.
Tyler Boyce
2023-01-25 15:42:09 +0000 UTCI had an idea of the NoClip crew doing a short playthrough of a game within the dev documentary about that game. With the more well-known AAA games, I can easily recognize when an interviewee brings up certain mechanics or characters. But for lesser-known and/or retro games, being able to get some NoClip reactions and think-aloud. If I haven't played the game, I don't really have a good frame of reference for a game is supposed to make me *feel*, you know?
Tyler Boyce
2023-01-25 15:40:36 +0000 UTCI'm a bit behind on watching the docs but do you have any "large scale" docs lined up for the year? I know that is a bit subjective but I mean the docs where you visit the studios and dig in to what they are doing or just recently did. Docs that come to mind are the Hades and FFXIV docs. Y'all are the best and keep up the good work!
Skyler Manley
2023-01-25 15:37:58 +0000 UTCI've been interested in the criteria you guys use to choose subjects for the docs. You mentioned recently that the work comes out best when you're passionate about it. Re: developing docs y'all were less personally invested in — is it that you're sometimes approached and offered a good level of hard-to-get access? Or that you thought certain games might play well with the audience? I'm guessing it's a combo of these things and more. Looking forward to the following-your-passions Signalis and Monkey Island (and uh COD I guess if Frank gets his way) docs in the future :)

2023-01-25 15:15:57 +0000 UTCHow about covering preservation? Hit up the VGHF, STRONG Museum, Gaming Alexandria, Digital Eclipse, etc. Anything that shines a light on these great organizations would be awesome.
