Spring is in the air, and here at WG headquarters, we're hard at work creating new classes, events, and fun for you both in San Francisco and online.
The theme of our week is integrating our kink identities into everything we do, and using our life and wellness tools to improve our kink lives. We're offering a flexibility and stretching class for kinksters in San Francisco, an online tarot class to help negotiate your scenes, and several classes to integrate kink techniques. Read on for more!
I'm thinking a lot this week about mastery. It's one thing to know intellectually what to do, but that doesn't build our skills. We need practice, we need to get creative, and we need to measure what works and what doesn't. I'm particularly excited about our suite of San Francisco playshops -- like last night's Wicked Rope Jam or this week's SpankLab -- as laboratories in which we can safely build our skills, experiment, get feedback, and continually improve our skills in a supportive and fun environment. Kink is not a one size fits all. There's no template.
One of the hardest journeys in kink is finding our own desires and voice. It takes strength to push past shame, self-doubt and others' requests of us to find something uniquely ours and worth cultivating. It's lifelong work; the people who have the most satisfaction in kink make time to do it regularly.
Despite many years teaching and consulting, I don't have the answers for you. But I do have a set of questions that will help you think deeply about desire and connection, and find your own answers.
In two weeks, we launch our next Diving Deep six-week course. This online intensive mirrors the work I've done in my own life and consulting to help kinksters unearth their own personal desires, find agency and authenticity, and begin to create the lives that they truly want in kink.

How we'll engage
The six week course will run live from Feb 17 - March 30, 2024
This class will include six total weeks of content and homework, two 90-minute live online group sessions (recorded for later participation if needed), and at least one half-hour individual consult with instructor Miriam Green. (Our class tiers include the option to add more consults for your own journey.)
Our two live sessions will be offered via Zoom on Saturday, February 24th 4pm-5:30pm Pacific (7pm-8:30pm Eastern) and Saturday, March 23rd 4pm-5:30pm Pacific (7pm-8:30pm Eastern). Both sessions will be recorded for later viewing or for those who cannot attend the sessions live.

Hello Kinksters -
We did it! We all collectively got through the darkest twelve weeks of the year. Congratulations!
What is germinating in you this early spring? What are you excited about?
I go into this season feeling grateful for last month's daily practice cohort. I've recommitted to personal journaling, and am scheduling time to finish drafting and revising my two book projects.
Our next six-week Diving Deep session launches this month to help kinksters delve into personal desire, all the hopes and fears that come with desire, and finding a voice to create the kink scenes and relationships we really want. This intensive is great for new kinksters, but even better for experienced players who feel stuck and want to chart out the next phase of their evolution. I'm also excited about the next few months, when several new Bay Area kink venues open their doors. In addition to our growing roster of online and hybrid classes, we'll have a lot more in person events and playshops returning to San Francisco this year. (And perhaps the return of our play party Wicked Grounds Playground? That's the rumor!)

Good morning!
I know some of you are following this closely since I first reached out yesterday, and others are just catching up. If this is your first time seeing this, you might want to read yesterday's post!
Since this time yesterday morning, 59 kinksters like you have helped Wicked Grounds raise over $8,500 toward retiring the worst and scariest of our old cafe debt. As you can learn more below this update, this particular creditor is threatening our continued operations (despite our honoring every part of our agreements with them), and we just need to get this one off our back.

As I write this, we have about $3K more to go to get this particular debt retired. Then, we'll be applying the next $6K or so toward un-fucking several payments that are currently delayed or otherwise screwed up due to this ongoing mess over the last month. Anything we collect beyond that will go toward paying down the overall remaining cafe debt (which is substantial, but not an existential threat).
Literally anything you can do will help. Have $5 bucks? $500? We'll put it to work keeping our operations going long into the future.
Some people have also been contributing outside the platform, which is just fine and gets the funds in our pocket much sooner. Here's how you can do that.
Once we hit our first goal of $11,681 for this creditor and stretch goal of $17,681 for the great unfucking, I do plan to keep the GoFundMe open and apply anything else straight to paying down the substantial debts we incurred in the last year keeping the cafe open. I appreciate anything and everything that y'all are doing.

I'm Mir and I'm the owner of Wicked Grounds, a leader in adult education around consent, boundaries, relationships and adult play.
As you may know, we started out as Wicked Grounds Cafe & Boutique: a physical home for the queer & leather community to gather, rabble-rouse, connect and play. For nearly ten years, the cafe was our home. While the pandemic lockdown had us physically closed for 18 months, we built up our educational programming to become a well known leader nationally and even internationally.
Unfortunately, our attempts to reopen the cafe & boutique post pandemic were extremely difficult, and we were unable to operate at a profit from the time COVID resurged in early 2022 until we made the sad decision to close the space in June 2023. During that time, we incurred nearly $80k in total debts just to meet payroll, pay the rent, and keep serving milkshakes. In June 2023, we made the sad decision to move entirely to education and let that beloved community space go.

Over the past six months, we've been reinventing ourselves as a force for adult education. We offer 25-30 events per month. And I've been working in good faith with most of our creditors to get our old debt paid down and get onto a new footing.
Well, except one.
I have one creditor who is 1/3 paid off, but is threatening to wreck the whole business over the $11,679 they are still owed. These folks are putting liens against our receivables, causing significant challenges to our cashflow (and making it nearly impossible to get our other commitments met in a timely manner). Everyone else is working with us but . . . these guys? They have got to go.
I don't have that kind of money sitting around. What I have is a drive for community education, a desire to move forward into what we're becoming, and faith in my community.

Hello Kinksters -
That start of a new year energy is in the air! This and last week's playshops have had great attendance and enthusiasm, and our cohort of mindfulness practitioners have been meditating and journaling up a storm. It's kind of like the energy you get at the gym or a yoga studio in January, and it's a lot of fun to be around!
Just like at the gym, sometimes it helps to have a personal coach. My own schedule has opened up a bit in the new year, so don't hesitate to reach out if you'd like to book some time together. As I write this, I'm sitting at the plant- and crystal-laden registration desk Mukunda Studio -- a warm, welcoming, queer yoga space in the Leather and LGBTW Cultural District. Outside, you can hear Folsom Street traffic. Indoors, we're surrounded by fabrics, wood, plants and shells, huge Quan Yin statues and a bevy of Ganeshas. It's a usually a quiet haven in the neighborhood, but today sensual R&B is playing in the studio space.
We're hosting our first Erotic Movement class since closing the old Wicked Grounds Annex last June, and I feel truly at home. It's taken a while, but I am beginning to feel the best of what it means to be Wicked Grounds in community with other local spaces.
All the more so because I parked just up the street at the Folsom Street Community Space, where we also hold classes. This afternoon, a crew of friendly leather folk are building a set of new shelves to house the collection of the Center for Sex and Culture -- which is also operating as a force in the world long after leaving a space of its own. The garage at Folsom Street is full of table saws, sawdust, sweat and smiles.
The industry of building together.
The quiet of finding one's own way to move, in a supportive group.
Loud and quiet. Fast and slow.
The ways we build relationships and community ebb and flow like that. Some days are busy; some days are quiet. Some days we reach out; some days we nestle inward.
Thankfully, we try to build opportunities for both.

Some of you know that I've been teaching in witchy woo-woo, magick and occult topics for even longer than I've been teaching in kink -- about twenty years as an instructor, and closer to thirty as a public ritualist in my primary traditions.
Often in the cooler months -- when I'm not as busy with kink events -- I pull out some of my magick classes and offer them through the Grounds for those who are also interested in this stuff. (Fun fact: the kink community tends to have both more secularists and more pagan folks than the population at large.)
Everyone tends to have a specialty or favorite area, and mine tends to be an eclectic mix of kabbalah and what we used to call chaos magick: so you'll see a lot of my classes popping up lately on things like kabbalah, Jewish mysticism, and sigils. I have to put that Jewish Studies major in college to use somehow!
Like kink, I don't teach kabbalah because it was an easy first fit. My first reaction -- when a friend suggested I start studying thirty years ago -- was that I didn't want to learn a lot of "archetypal, patriarchal bullshit." Well . . . famous last words. Now, the core work of kabbalah is the stuff I can teach in my sleep. It's the structure that I used to organize my thoughts, without thinking about it too much. As Zalman Schachter-Shalomi might say, it's as close to me as breathing in is to breathing out.

As a young adult, I struggled with developing my sex positivity. Many of us do. Let's face it: most of us grow up with terrible support around sex, pleasure, consent and communication.
I grew up queer, and realized I was non-monogamous in high school. (Kink came soon after.) Trying to figure this out as a Catholic school student during the Reagan/ Bush years was . . . not easy. I became very at home in the queer books section of my local public library, and tried to figure it all out on my own.
My journals from young adulthood are filled with one phrase, over and over: "I will be sex positive by the year 2000." As if I could just write out that mantra (and read a lot of Annie Sprinkle, Susie Bright, and On Our Backs) and it would all work out.
Because of my own internalized fears, I took years before connecting with the public BDSM scene. Years of making it up on my own. Years of taking the word of the dominants I found on my own rather than cultivating my own desire and will.
If I had one thing to do over in the world of kink, I'd have connected with the public BDSM scene sooner.
Connecting with the world of kink isn't (just) about finding potential play partners. It's about building a group of friends and co-adventurers who can see you as you are. It's about finding reputable information from folks with lived experience. It's about having people to celebrate your wins and commiserate with you when things are rough.
Some might even say it's about creating a sense of community, or leather family.
In many ways, I teach now in order to help people be a little less scared than I was. I'd have been safer and happier if I'd connected with my local scene sooner.
If you're looking to explore, and intimidated, a few tips.
- We're all just nerds. I'm serious. You know how nerds have a special hobby that they really just want to share all the details and gear with anyone who will listen? Ask a whip enthusiast about single-tails sometime.
- Most of us started out scared, too. Maybe we still are sometimes. That accomplished rope performer you see doing self-suspension? They still get butterflies in their stomach before going out on stage. And that's okay!
- Enthusiastic consent is paramount. In a good class / party / venue, you'll never "have" to do anything. Watching is ok. Hanging out is ok. Saying no is ok. Good players and good organizations will respect your boundaries.
- There is no one right and only way. If you are new to kink, you'll attract folks that want to impress you talking about The Old Guard, or various Leather Tenets, or their various rules for D/s. You know what? Maybe those are important . . . to them. And we should respect that. But you? You get to find your own way. You get to be your own authority. There are many right ways to do kink, and only a very few wrong ones.
- Every single one of us has things we prefer, and things we won't do. As you explore the world of kink, you'll find things you are definitely attracted to, things you're puzzled by, and things that you're definitely turned off by. That is completely normal. Hard limits are a sign that you're listening to yourself, your wants and your needs. Our goal is not to "outgrow" them, but honor them. (Some of my personal hard limits are medical play, piercing, and . . . cuddle parties. Hard no on the cuddle parties.)
I'm not going to tell you that every single space out there is safe. Pretty much anyone can put out a listing on FetLife for an event, so vetting for trustworthy educators, social event leaders and party hosts is important. But it can be done -- not just where I'm blessed with a zillion resources here in SF, but almost anywhere.

Hey, it's Mir.
It's early (early, early!) on the first business day of the year, and I'm sitting in the home office on my second cup of coffee already, trying to catch up.
I traditionally spend the last week of each year camping. Even in tight times, I find camping is a great way to find restoration and expansiveness. This year, I was delighted to find a spot out in the southern California desert with a truly exceptional starry sky and -- get this! -- enormous pools filled with hot spring water. (All this for less than my local NorCal campgrounds! Amazing!)
Getting away isn't the challenge during the quiet of the end of year. Heck, coming back isn't the challenge. (I truly love my work, even in hard times.)
The challenge is holding on to that sense of expansiveness as the new week, month, and year arrive.
Perhaps you're feeling the same way.
My recommendations today:
Take a moment to breathe. There's nothing that can't wait for 90 seconds while you have a moment to be present. Most things will even be better if you can come back to them more present.
Remember who you are. Most of us can't be fully "out" at work, whether that's about our full queer selves, our poly families, or our kink resolutions. It's okay to make strategic decisions about what we disclose and where. But we don't need to lose our sense of self to do that.
Make a promise to yourself for time to be yourself. Make a commitment. Is there a class you really want to take? A part of your city or countryside you've wanted to explore? A practice you want to take up? Schedule some time for it. Just setting aside 15 minutes a day for a personal practice or a time of reflection on days off can be a way to keep a sense of expansiveness in the hustle and bustle.
If part of your commitment to yourself this year is expanding kink knowledge, I hope that we can be of service to you. Never hesitate to reach out for help connecting with community! I just saw a meme in which someone says -- against all fear -- "I think 2024 will bring flowers." The other creature in the panel says, "Yes? Why?" and our little hero says: "Because I am planting flowers."
It won't be a surprise to you: that resonated with me. I am a strong believer in the power of intention. It's why Wicked Grounds puts self-awareness and intention at the heart of kink education.
It's been a heck of a year at Wicked Grounds, but because of you we are still here and still building community. While we've closed the brick and mortar (for now), we are offering more classes than ever to a widening Bay Area and global audience. We've just done an end-of-year review on our scholarship seats awarded.
Financial accessibility is important to us, and it's clearly important to all of you. From the beginning, we've made every event available on a sliding scale.
