Setting Course for our Next Documentary...

Hey Patrons. Can you keep a secret?

We've got bunches of videos coming over the next few weeks, but on Sunday we embark on an exciting journey to cover a game a lot of you have been asking about.

We're flying south to Obsidian Entertainment to talk to the developers of The Outer Worlds about the design of their wonderful first-person RPG. We'll be talking to them about quest design, world design, character design, combat, story, and so much more.

But we'd love to hear what questions you'd like answered. So please, if you have any questions stick them in the comments below. We'll make sure to cover them during our time at the studio.

We'll be teasing the announcement over the coming days, so please do us a favor and keep your lips sealed.

Thanks so much for you support. We hope you're enjoying the new pace of Noclip - all possible due to your funding.

I'm curious about if have any ideas to expand the universe or leave it as it is. What do they think about the comparison with the Mass Effect universe? Could they name sources of inspirations?

Георгий Ядвидчук

I'd like to know when they were making/designing this were they conscious of trying to avoid just re-skinning fallout. Were they tempted to put a pip-boy in there?

will do :)

Question for the devs: the “dumb” path through the game was extremely entertaining and I’m impressed they accounted for it in nearly every situation, so much so that I have to wonder, is the “dumb” path the canonical run?

Andrew McCann

Heck. Yes.

Why wasn’t the player character voiced? I felt like I never saw her.

Nick Hide

I have no questions, but if you can thank the people who took part in creating Parvati and her personal quest, that would be awesome !

Disco Cat

A couple of questions :) How did they link up with private division to gain funding, what made they decide to go with them? What was the relationship like and how did it affect the game? How has does it compare to being a first party Microsoft studio? Who owns the rights to outer worlds? Also after finishing it, I felt that outer worlds was one of the most consistently funny games I've played in a while, maybe since sunset overdrive, how did they refine this and was it always something from day one? Are there many people who are from the KOTOR 2 days as the KOTOR/Mass effect influence was definitely felt!

Jack Mayo

Obsidian has had some experience with crowdfunding with the Pillars of Eternity games. The Outer Worlds wasn't. How did that decision affect the development practices/priorities of the game?

Jon LeNeveu

Also, why didn’t my robot son get a companion quest?

I feel like The Groundbreaker was supposed to play a bigger part in the endgame than it did, so I think discussing what they had to scale down on during development (I know Cain said they had a really quick turnaround on this) would be interesting.

Would love to hear their thoughts on the speedrun community after having the game shown at AGDQ this year. IGN did a great dev commentary on the world record run and it was so interesting to hear them react to the exploits and try to guess what the player was going to do next.

Zoë F Wolfe

I would be curious what it was like working with unreal vs Bethesda's engine. Obviously there wasn't any radiant ai in the game as NPCs never moved.

Eric Pihlblad

I've only played a few hours but I love what I've played, curious how much other science fiction media inspired their work on this game. I assume the crew is filled with people who had a love for things like Firefly and Cowboy Bebop. I'm assuming you'll also do a side doc asking them to discuss Fallout New Vegas as well as I'd love to hear what they have to say on it.

Gabriel Costa (Hired Sword)

Hey! I was super intimidated by other Obsidian RPGs but I played this one thanks to Xbox Game Pass. It wasn’t intimidating at all! Did Obsidian do anything differently to “on-ramp” players more gradually? Thanks!

Jacob McCourt

Did the game had any other mind blowing glitches besides the one where companions were getting killed at the ship?

I found myself focusing on every NPC's left ear during every conversation I had with them because they placed a light source behind and to the left for every interaction causing them ALL to light up bright red and orange from the blood vessels. Did anyone on the team notice or raise that as a potential distraction or issue?

neuroflare

Seeing as this is more of a 'medium size' game, is Obsidian interested in creating more games of this scale or are they more interested in larger experiences now that they have been purchased by Microsoft?

Hassun

I guess an obvious one would be how and do they compare to Fallout throughout making the game?

Bavo Debraekeleer

It seems like they must be huge Firefly fans. I'm curious about whether this was consciously acknowledged during development, especially around the scripting of Parvati.

What's Josh Sawyer working on?

When you first sit down knowing you want to create a new game, how does the idea pitching begin? How long into that process was it before you decided on the concept of the outer worlds?

Tory Thompson

I'd love to hear about how much changed from the original concept of the game to the finished product. What were some of the biggest differences? How did they manage their time to avoid feature creep?

Furious George

When designing a creature, where do you start? Do you see a spot on the map that needs more interactive stuff and go from there or does the map come after?

Thom Blackburn

I'd love to know how much they were inspired by other sci-fi franchises, and which ones inspired them the most? I have a hunch many of them were big fans of Mass Effect, Borderlands, and obviously Fallout (because New Vegas)

Is there any opportunity to discuss Fallout New Vegas development, the original fallout or even Alpha Protocol?? Such an amazing developer. I would ove to hear about them accepting first party support at Xbox, or even just the genesis of this game - scratching an itch left by new vegas or their past efforts and what they have planned for the future. I am so excited!!

Christopher Kelly

Oh yeah! I just recently finished playing it (and the started playing the Outer Wilds...not confusing at all). I’m super curious to hear about how did the selection of companions evolved? We’re there the ones who ended up in the floor of the editing room so to speak? Did they expect Parvati would become so iconic? And is there something they wish they’d done differently about any of the characters?
