Questions Please! (Patron Show Jan 2019)

The office Noclip sign (I need to remember who sent us this!) sort of works as a snow stencil. PS my hands are now freezing!

Patrons!

It's been a month. One postponed project has opened up a bunch of new possibilities and we've finally gotten our weekly podcast off the ground. More videos landing this month but before we get into those, it's time for a catch-up and a Q&A.

So if you've got questions about what we're doing this year - stuff you'd like us to do - events you'd like us to go to - or contemplations on our direction - please stick them in the comments!

Talk soon!

Danny

Who are your documentarian influences? Or, to put a wider scope, your filmmaking and video producing influences? (Aside from Jeremy, because obviously he is amazing)

Tory Thompson

Hey. Just watched some Sekiro gameplay and remembered how they won't do a doc with Noclip. Fair enough, but isn't it possible to a documentary in the vein of the half life and gta online doc? I reckon the community would be interested even though the developer don't have a culture for it.

Øyvind Sju Myhren

Hey mate well done on the Half Life doc it was definitely a different and interesting direction you and the team took with it and the effort shows. Obviously based on your travel vlog's it would've been exhausting. So do you think you'll be taking this angle again with project? (maybe on a smaller scope). Also loved the SG-1 love in the Directing God Of War interview haha. Once again I think I write this for every Patron Show Q&A (haha) but great work.

Charles Guillot

I'd love to see a doc on one of the big sports games out there :-) Also, Stardew Valley!

How do you record the podcasts? Skype? Discord? A high quality audio channel service?

Landon Robinson

With IO Interactive, and more recently Bungie, going independent - would you approach either of these companies to tell their story? With how successful noclip docs have been without you at the helm, can you tease anything that is being worked on at the moment with a guest presenter?

Christopher Kelly

Bioware is a good shout.

Charalampos Koundourakis

Video games you're looking forward to in 2019! Go!

Shell Comics

With the upcoming release of Anthem, it seems like a great time for a Bioware doc. If it’s not something they’re interested in doing then maybe talking to the Bioware founders on how two doctors decided to start a video game company. Love what you’re doing Danny keep up the good work!

Patrick Scott

Happy New 2019! Let’s forget about NoClip for a second (heresy, I know). What are you looking forward to the most in your personal life? Any interesting goals you’re trying to achieve this year?

Tohir Tillyaev

Hey Danny! I really admire how much effort you and the team put into the work at NoClip. I'd love to know what your daily routine would look like with regards to workload, life balance etc. and what you do to stave off procrastination and welcome motivation. :)

Dan! Had a thought today; not sure how feasible it would be, but I would LOVE to see NoClip have a look into how cross platform play became adopted by major consoles this generation. This feels like such a monumental step forward for consumers, and I'm fascinated by how it came to be. Who were the people that made it happen? What were the hurdles to make it work? I'm just blown away that we've actually made it to this point.

Allen Harrold

Hey Danny! NoClip is a huge inspiration and you're a big role model for thinking/writing/talking about games - would NoClip ever reach out to the community for help at events or similar? If y'all came out to PAX East I'd totally volunteer to be a PA or something of the like, and I bet many Patrons would too!

Ethan Thibault

Hey Danny, happy new year!!! I’d love to see something on the business side of the industry, perhaps by focusing on the tendencies of what the decisions arising from executives of AAA publishers/devs have been and where they are taking the industry (those that gamers tend to associate with greed, lack of innovation/creativity and the scheme of having games as service/microtransactions as the main monetization tool) vs the decisions arising from the smaller publishers/devs who are more like artisans working on their creations - with insight into some success and failure stories coming from both angles? Complex for sure, but would be freaking awesome!

Have you considered covering the world of game journalism? I’d love to have a quick and modern 1UP Show style look at how game journalism works in 2019.

Matthew Glenn

I think it would be cool to see a documentary about the cross play movement that happening and push the positive narrative about how this can help smaller online games and their communities/player pools. I've been wanting to play more laser league but the online experience hasn't been the best with long matchmaking times, unfilled lobbies, and high level players dominating new players. I read this post... https://505games.com/the-future-of-laser-league ... which says that during their initial development they were investigating cross play but deemed it to difficult to due to their team size and chose to make the best game possible instead. Now epic is making their online cross play tools available for free to anyone regardless of the engine they're using. This seems like such a huge step toward having cross play be the norm and I think there are opportunities and conversations worth exploring out there. I recently rewatched some of the rocket league extended interviews and hearing Jeremy Dunham speak about cross play and how they were trying to push the conversation was interesting given it was pre fortnite. Not to mention they just announced it went into full cross play today!

Would love a noclip Destiny development saga, no idea if recent events make it any more possible or at all of interest to Danny but it would be fascinating.

Hey Danny! With the recent news of Bungie and Activision going their separate ways, I was curious: Have you ever done a doc about a studio/developer gaining independence as opposed to just starting that way? If not, is this a topic you would like to cover and if so, what could some examples be? Thanks as always for taking my question and I hope you've had a great start to 2019.

Brandon K Gann

Happy New Year Danny! Given that Sony aren't showing at/around E3 this year, do you think this sort of show is on borrowed time if the big platform holders etc pull away and do their own thing? This might be fine for them but the big showcases were often more importantly a great platform for more indie/non AAA games to get up in front of a bigger audience. What's the future for events? Sorry for another rambly question, feel free to skip! :-) PS – if Brexit goes to shit can we come and stay with you... All the best.

You've mentioned in passing that you'd love to get your content up on Netflix or Amazon. Is that something that you've looked into where you've been in contact with their representatives? And what would a deal like that involve? I know you want to, generally, stay away from sponsored content.

Amir Rangnekar

How has working from home with a newborn been for your work/productivity? As someone who has a 3 month old daughter as well, and has the flexibility to WFH whenever I need, I'm curious how you're approaching it (do you shut the door for the day, and maybe visit around lunchtime? maybe pop up here and there to take a turn on baby duty? etc). I'm really enjoying it, though obviously it can be quite distracting. I'm sure the basement office helps in your scenario. Keep up the awesome docs!!

Landon Robinson

No need to use specific examples, but when you have done a doco on some company or event and then some bullshit blows up about that thing how do you feel? Is there any thing you do to protect yourself in the case where you feel you would have to pull a doco or something?

Fragglerock

What are your criteria for picking a project?

Jon LeNeveu

Are you going to be attending/showing at GDC again this year? It was great to run into you at the Train Jam booth last year.

Kevin O'Neil

Hey Danny - loving the podcasts and Hades episodic content. As it's hard to keep all of us happy, have you ever considered a survey to vote on the next project? Then of course you'd need a pre-survey to list what to include in the survey. :)

Any plans to do anything with Vlambeer? They seem like an interesting bunch.
