Patron Show Call for Questions!

Hey folks!

Tomorrow we're recording July's Patron show with all the updates on what's coming to Noclip this month and beyond. And as ever I'll be taking time to answer your questions!

This is the first show since we launched the Bethesda videos so you probably have a lot of questions. Stick them in the comments below and I'll do my best to answer as many as possible.

Thanks so much!

Danny

Would you ever want to see classic cames like Infocom's Zork series re-made with current tech?

Rob Curran

Non NoClip question for you....can your daughter make a cameo appearance on the next Q&A? And a No-Clip question for you...can we have tonnes more behind the scenes stuff for everything...like the Japan trip for final fantasy here, or the Bethesda one? Congrats Danny and to your wife too!!!!

So how do you deal with something like the current GOG bad tweet happening right before the release of the doc? https://twitter.com/VG247/status/1019851204275384320

I know it's probably too late for the question and that you have voiced your interest in this project earlier, but I still want to show some interest in this one : No man's sky!

Øyvind Sju Myhren

When working on a documentary, how do you deal with the fact that you can't fully predict the outcome? How much is planned/storyboarded before you start shooting, and how much is just left to "we'll see what happens, let's start rolling"?

BasV

Hey there! For those of us that are looking at going to Japan for the first time, what suggestions or things would you recommend after your trips over there?

Craig

With a game that isn’t out yet, how was your preparation for the interviews different? We’re your questions more broad, or did you see some of the game and get info before starting your interviews? Side question- how do you choose the interview filming locations. Are they convenient spots, or do you spend a lot of time searching for visually appealing places to film them? Thanks!

Tory Thompson

Hey Danny, I really enjoyed your Production Class for putting together the Bethesda project trailer. How maddening is it to maintain a workflow when you've committed to using code names for all your footage? I totally get why you do it, but on a complex edit I could see that stuff driving me up the wall pretty quick. Keep up the great work!

Now that you tackled the rise of a large triple A studio and it's games, are there any small indies planned for the future?

Bavo Debraekeleer

I'd be much more interested in this than the bigger games, the passion of indie developers surely can write a good story.

Edward Steele

How worried are you about your footage or information you have garnered "leaking out" (obviously unintentionally from your end). Particularly with something like Fallout 76 which was obviously a 'big reveal', how conscious were you of this as a concern? Congratulations on impending fatherhood. I have two young children myself (both under 5). Dickens ironically sums it up quite well "It is the best of times, it is the worst of times".

What's a game that you think is great that no one else likes? Congrats on future fatherhood, you're gonna be an awesome dad!

Josh Squires

You ever thought about doing a NoClip ep on the modding community at large (fixing/updating semi broken games like Aliens Colonial Marines, KOTOR 2, Half Life 1 ala the Black Mesa release by modders)

Nick Grugin

Danny, I loved the Bethesda/Fallout 76 docs, they convinced me it was high time I became a Patron. I'm wondering if you fellas would ever be interested in telling stories about smaller games. Stardew Valley was and continues to be a smash hit and I know a lot of gamers would like more insight into the development process. ConcernedApe and others of his ilk have always fascinated me. I know the story telling might be more difficult as you all rely heavily on interviews to provide insight (which is great) but a short doc about any indie developer would be very welcome. Can't wait to hear more about what you all have planned for this year!

Danny - congratulations on the upcoming arrival and the release of your BGS series. Your work is tremendous... so thank you for that. As an inexperienced/smaller creator, you have to continue to make and create to get better (I fully prescribe to both Malcolm Gladwell and Ira Glass' philosophies around creating/practicing). However, as you create and release work, it can sometimes feel as though you're constantly screaming into the void. You should be making content for the intrinsic enjoyment you get from it... but I'm sure every creator has been there. Do you have any strategies or suggestions to mitigate those feelings? PS: have you talked in detail about your arm tattoo yet?

Jacob McCourt

I wonder if Giant Bomb still has the footage from the camera that they gave to Supergiant Games? I think some of it went unreleased.

Jacob McCourt

How is the possibility of Noclip doing a doc on a closed down studio? Is that even possible? I would love to see one on the Timesplitters games by Free Radical Design for example, but the studio no longer exists. Or Ensemble Studios about the Age of Empires series

Hey Danny! Many CONGRATULATIONS to you and your family and may enjoy your new ultimate adventure.. am going to be cheeky ask two questions.. do you think the modding community has had positive impact on game developers would ever do doc on in indie puzzle game Monument Valley?

Possibly off topic but any thoughts on what age you’ll introduce your little one(s) to games? My sons turning four on Wednesday (his sister is one)... I adore games, but I’m not sure if he’s old enough, playing on the floor seems way better! Friends who casually game have their kids playing already though.

James Bowman

Would you be interested in making a doc on Supergiant Games ? they're arguably a very small developer that makes some of the best games the industry has to offer in my opinion. The way the games are consistently interesting, coherent and the way how parts of the game inform one another is something I haven't seen in any other games.

Vova SparksV

Hey mate, You guys have been doing pretty bloody well recently and Noclip is obviously getting great rep within the Industry. Are you finding that now companies are contacting you instead of you having to contact them to arrange potential docos? And my second and the most important question mate. When are we going to see Noclips Food (We Don't Play) miniseries haha.

Charles Guillot

Premiere Shop talk - 1) what plug-ins for color grading are you sticking to these days? 2) Any tricks you've come across for audio mixing? I just finished a bunch of bonus material for a blu ray release and I'm not too in love with using the effect editor to move my dips around. Thanks!

Love your work. Ever think about doing something in the future similar to "The Point" from previous works on Gamespot, discussing various topics related to gaming and the industry?

Hello Danny, something I've been wondering since becoming a patron is whether Noclip had any plans "branching out", so to say, acting as a sort of (executive) producer for other people's documentaries. You mentioned something of the sort in the random update a few weeks back, so I was hoping you could get into a little more detail on that if you're able to. Love the content you all are producing, and it would be phenomenal if you could help others reach the level of care and polish a Noclip doc gets. All the best with your various struggles and congratulations on becoming a father soon, cheers.

Lorenzo Hulzebos

Congrats on the upcoming O'Dwyer! As someone who has a static paycheck coming in at a regular intervals, I'm curious how much risk you build into NoClip operations seeing as you can fluctuate month over month. Is there a certain amount you're underspending to make sure you weather any dips, or have you every overextended for a great opportunity or story to tell? Can't wait to watch the GOG doc!

Kyle Anderson

As someone who is still changing their working life balance, I'm interested in how you decide to divide your time between docs, the podcast, Patreon content, Bonus Level and of course your cats

I just finished watching the trailer for the upcoming GOG doc. and one of the images that flashed by on the screen when they were talking about games preservation looked like Cate Archer from NOLF series. Is GOG trying to get the NOLF series up and running again? NOLF was one of my favorite series (the first two games), a great blend of drama and camp. Keep up the great work!

Hey Danny! Before getting into my question, I just to go ahead and leave another CONGRATULATIONS! to you and your family! (Yes, the two exclamation points are intentional =-] ). I'm curious on how your E3 Coliseum panel came together. Was it a part of the plan from you at the start to be a part of E3 when filming the docs or were you contacted shortly afterward to see if you would be interested. It was really neat to see yourself and Misters Howard and Keighley talk about it. Thanks and have a wonderful day! P.S. I'm still bummed they didn't mentioned NoClip during the showcase, but a hearty thanks to yourself and Mister Boyes for reading the teleprompter during the Quake Champions segment. It had me in tears for laughing so hard.

Brandon K Gann

Have you had much time to play games recently? What you playing? What you looking forwards to playing?

Fragglerock

I'm being very selfish with this as few in many love it... Any plans on hitting up the Ubisoft Tom Clancy Universe? Or even an ubi related doc in general?

Do you guys have an idea for a doc and then pursue it? Or do you wait for a developer/publisher to contact you? Also, anyone a fan of Rainbow Six: Siege? A doc on that would be great in my opinion.

Possible dumb question here: I've always heard that Skyrim started out as a Game of Thrones video game before it became Skyrim. When you spoke to the team at Bethesda regarding their history and the making of their games, did this ever come up? Is it just a complete rumor because it looks and feels so much like it could take place in the Game of Thrones universe?

FlaminQueso

So here's a question for you to deflect: Any plans for a Cyberpunk 2077 doc?

Øyvind Sju Myhren

As a person who is privy to lots of behind the scenes information do you have any opinions on the leaked Cyberpunk 2077 audio and the excuses and justifications the leaker made?

The Mighty Pipe

Ok man I'll be blunt - I felt weird watching a documentary on a game that wasn't released and that I haven't played yet (Fallout 76). The documentary was great as usual but documentaries on unfinished / unreleased games seem like dangerous territory. What's your stance on things like this?

Todd Howard is fast approaching 50 yrs old and has shorter legs, could you beat him in a foot race? I don't think you could - I bet he moves so fast, like a chipmunk. I've been saying this for years.

Baron Von Susscabus

Any chance you could give us a tease of the next game you’ll be working on? PS congrats on the baby!

With the Fallout doc behind you do you feel more comfortable and capable than ever in terms of approaching any developer out there in an effort to tell their story? Or do you still feel like you have to prove yourself and have a 'chip on your shoulder'?

Amir Rangnekar

You showed some clips from the Bethesda all-hands meeting but very little content. Without getting into NDA problems, could you get into the structure of those meetings and if they’re more speeches or conversations with those in attendance? As a project manager I’m really interested in the purpose of meetings that large.
