BONUS LEVEL EPISODE ONE! [EARLY ACCESS]

(THIS IS EARLY ACCESS / DON'T SHARE YET!)

Here it is!

It's been around 20 months since my last episode of The Point on GameSpot but I'm finally back on the op-ed trolley.

The first episode of Noclip Bonus Level dives into the history of the first person shooter, the rise of games-as-a-service, and how games like DOOM 2016 & PUBG are bringing back the tactical delight of combat chess.

I know a lot of you supported Noclip hoping that I'd continue this type of work. Sorry to keep you waiting, and I hope this was worth the wait.  I think I needed a break to learn how to tackle these again, and I have to say the process of putting this together was a blast.

Take a look, and let me know what you think.

BONUS LEVEL EPISODE ONE! [EARLY ACCESS]

Comments

My first episode as a Patr(e)on! All the stuff you've produced so far has been brilliant, and Bonus Level adds a new dimension to the channel that only makes it even more comprehensive and essential. In the previous post, you mentioned having to rework this episode due to current events surrounding firearms in the US. Given the heated discourse, I completely understand if you don't want to call more attention to this decision, but I would love to see/hear/read you talk more about the thought process and work that went into the changes you made. Thanks again for the amazing work you do!

Really nicely done! It’s a great addition to the absolutely superb work you do with the docs and sessions. Everything noclip does just makes me feel really good about giving a bit of my living to you. The way you integrate us patrons and really stick to your work ethics is just one of a kind. To have a bit of feedback on this episode, the only thing that I found a bit unnecessary is the middle part where you kinda summarized the first ten minutes of the video to go further. But, this episode being as short as it is, it felt a bit redundant.

“So what’s The Point of all this?” Well done sir. Happy to have The Point back again!

Michael Bataligin

Excellent work Danny. This series complements the documentaries so well.

Danny, I don’t even care how frequently we’ll get these, I’m just happy we do! This episode was everything I think I needed - it was sentimental, thought provoking and educational as well. Yet another thing for people to study this industry on.

Tohir Tillyaev

I loved this! And couldn't agree more with you Danny! <3

Dan Longman

Absolutely amazing job Danny! It's great to see "The Point" return. I don't know if that little wink at the end "what is the point" was deliberate, but it was cool either way. Awesome!

Marcel Hedemand

Very cool video and awesome graphics!

I'm so sad that Destiny 2 turned out so bad when Bungie had a clear path to what was working really well by the end of Destiny 1 Year 3. I always keep coming back to Overwatch since it always scratches my arena shooter itch.

Justin Dotson

YES!! I jumped on the bandwagon for both The Division and Destiny 2 and in the beginning loved them but when the stories were finished it became monotonous. Since I've taken a step back and am playing Witcher 3 again and playing Icewind Dale again to get back some of those things I miss. Great as always

Rob Curran

New Wolfenstein is another good example of old school shooter remade correctly :)

Great stuff Danny! Been waiting for this format to come back!

Great job on the show Danny! Hope it doesn't create too much stress, but every several months this kind of content is refreshing. Always happy to get some of your insight into the industry.

Also, if you are ever looking for someone to help with the game accessibility content you mentioned a while ago, I’d be glad to help as a legally blind gamer myself.

Jesse Anderson

Great work on the video! You articulated what I’ve been thinking about first person shooters for a while now. FPS is my favorite genre, and I miss the classic Combat Chess and CQC (close quarters combat) of the 90’s games. Wolf 3D, Doom, Duke 3D, Quake, Half Life, FEAR, NOLF are all some of my favorite games ever. I think it’s because of the weapons, enemies, and arena that just worked so well. Now it’s all about wide open areas, grinding, and monitization and loot. I don’t mind the single player Call of Duty stories once in a while, but I just don’t care for most modern multiplayer shooters. I’m not sure about PubG though as a low vision gamer because so much of that game is seeing people from a distance in wide open areas. I’m glad to see games like Dusk and Ion Maiden try bringing back some of the 90’s style shooting. Even the trend of procedurally generated FPS games don’t quite work because everything isn’t fine tuned to work together. Well done on the video though, and keep up the great work!

Love it Danny!

This is awesome Danny! I never noticed myself, but you articulated where I couldn't for myself why Destiny and the Division just didn't pan out like I wanted. I bought Destiny to play with friends but I'm not into loot grinding all that much and your thoughts on the Division are EXACTLY how I feel and why I didn't pick up the game after trying the beta. I'm looking forward to other Bonus Levels and the impending Warframe doc! Keep up the fantastic work!

You absolutely killed this video, Danny. I've been fleshing out this topic for a while on paper but you brought some perspectives I hadn't even thought of! Bravo. Can't wait for episode 2!!

Alex Van Aken

This is so great! That opening graphic is so damn beautiful.

Shawn Cassidy

Great stuff Danny! I loved watching The Point, and so this is a very welcome return to the format. And I bloody love the intro logo. T-Shirt Please!!!!! :D

Simon D

Thx Danny, missed your take on the Point but this made me realise how much I missed it! Great show and I hope you will continue to make these.

Magnus Tegnvallius
