December Patron Show - Call for Questions!

Hey Patrons!

Hopefully by now you've caught up on our PLAYERUNKNOWN and Grand Theft Auto Online documentaries. We're hard at work here on a bunch of stuff including our Horizon Zero Dawn doc that will be live on the 18th of December, while Jeremy is editing a bunch of the Noclip Sessions we never got around to publishing earlier this year. Expect those over the holiday break and beyond.

Oh and we're doing sneaky stuff you'll hear about soon enough.

In the meantime though - it's time for a catch up - and we want your questions. So please, if you have any questions about our recent work, our plans for 2018, or anything else - please paste them in the comments below.

Hi Danny, hope my home state of MD is treating you well! I just have a suggestion for a future doc: BioShock Infinite, its delayed development cycle, and the closing of Irrational Games. It’s one of my favorites of all time and would love to get a deeper look into the hardships Levine and team faced during that time. Thanks!

Koray Savas

I've got to say, Knox almost brought a tear to my eye in that GTA doc - pure kindness. I wondered if you have had any similar experience with meeting friends through games in a similar manner?

I know Noclip is not monetized on YouTube, but I am curious about how YouTube Red works for creators. From what I know, all the Red revenue is distributed to a channel according to all red subscriber watching time combined on that channel and that means your subscription fee is distributed based on not your own watching history but all the subscribers' watching history. Is that the case or there are something else there? Cheers

Are there any issues in the gaming community you want to tackle? Documentaries that challenge perceptions, industry standards, or any injustice? You're already doing an amazing job showing all the dedication developers pour into their work, which hopefully leads to more compassionate players who will be hesitant to call developers lazy or other insane ideas that get perpetuated. Curious to see how NoClip can challenge viewers on other issues if that's an area of interest.

Is there any chance we'll see a doc on Halo and how it shaped shooters on console?

Lucas Schleicher

Would you consider doing docs for tabletop games? Whether that be the format in general or specific games like Dungeons & Dragons or Magic the Gathering?

All the fun NoClip items aside - what are your plans for holidays? How are you guys thinking to celebrate Xmas and NYE?

Tohir Tillyaev

Any chance there will be a Planetside 1+2 doc? :) Also, Christmas stream(s)?

Tho I agree definitely there should be a video about viseral, there was a piece that went into the nitty gritty of why the studio closed in Kotaku, outlining all the small things leading to it's closure https://kotaku.com/the-collapse-of-viscerals-ambitious-star-wars-game-1819916152

My only question is ....with your wonderful docs can or will you investigate what happened to Visceral. You are the greatest doc creater for the games industry. Keep it up, much love. Keep the content going and up your patreon support, been here since the beginning, willing too give more.

Would you - spare time dependent - consider regular one-on-ones whether it's a podcast or randomly spaced sporadic interviews. Kinda like the GDC spots but in less of a formal/industry atmosphere? Other question - Indie studio docs in 2018? Studio rather than game specific maybe - Like Supergiant etc, fascinating little studio with interesting and almost unique like games. Or Fullbright and the design of 'walking simulators'. Aside from that, thanks for an excellent set of docs in 2017 (looking forward to Horizon and the other GDC bits) and may it continue into 2018!

Hi Danny. What things do you take with you when travelling to make life away from home that little bit easier? For me it's a pillow, because all the ones provided in hotels are awful.

I really liked Pirate Radio! Do you have plans of expanding it's format and how often it is created?

Congrats on the epic success not only in 2017 but 2016 also. Such a brave move by you so well done. Do you think you will ever delve into the reasons why Ireland has the largest install base of PS4's per capita? Also would love to see noclip do two things in 2018.... 1. No Man's Sky Doc and 2. A Fireside chat or some kind of work with Colin Morriarty. Anyway enjoy the Christmas break and look forward to continuing to support your amazing work. Go n eiri an bother leat mo cairde. Tony

Hi Danny, after a few docs carrying spoiler warnings, and with one eye on the upcoming 'Horizon Zero Dawn' doc (a game I've yet to complete), I was wondering if you're giving any thought to how future docs deal with the issue of spoilers. A pre-video warning is a good step but stops spoiler-sensitive folk from seeing any of the doc. Would you (or even could you) consider some kind of onscreen prompt that could help guys like me skip past the spoilery stuff but still see the majority of the video? Keep up the amazing work.

Kev Dellaq

Would you consider making content focused more on the culture of games, historical pieces or a fly on the wall doc following a game from start to finish? Some examples to explain my thoughts 1. Filming a doc at a game jam such as Train Jam 2. The rise, fall and return of pinball 3. Doing secret interviews at Ubis main studio for Assassins Creed, over four distinct periods, tracking the game from before announcement to launch

Simon Johnson

Bloodborne stuff would be great. * that or darksouls*

Aliens Colonial Marines no clip doc? Why it failed? I know I know, probably will never happen for MANY reasons but hey, I had to ask. Keep up the good work Danny and try not to work yourself too hard.

Any chance of a NoClip alternative christmas message?

Hey Danny, loved the GTA doc and pubg profile. Question: with the GTA doc what was it like with the shift from talking with devs to talking with players, passion, enthusiasm etc.. also what challenges did you face when interview players vs devs?

Hey Mr. O'Dwyer! Congratulations on a phenomenal 2017 for NoClip! While I eagerly await your doc on my personal 2017 GOTY, I had a question about the most recent project: The Hillbillies of Grand Theft Auto. While I don't like GTA, I LOVED the story of a great group of folks coming together from all over, which got me wondering: How did you come across Hillbilly Agenda? Did you happen across them while playing GTA Online one evening, find out about them from a third party, or some other means? If you've already answered this, please disregard. Regardless, fantastic job, super excited for the Horizon doc (Nice early Christmas present!), and have a wonderful day sir!

Hey Danny! Wanted to ask how being in Maryland has been so far for both yourself and for Noclip. Any big positives/negatives/things you didnt expect? Thanks!~

kyle disanjh

Hey Danny, have you ever thought about doing a doc series parallel to a games development and released slightly before or just after launch? Is that something you would ever consider?

Matthew Nichols

Hey Danny! I wanted to ask about your relationship with video game publishers. Did you interact a lot with Bethesda and Sony, or do you mostly just work with the developers themselves? Have there been any corporate policies that have made your job harder?

Peter Karadimas

In the GTAV community doc, the interplay about crew members who were in law enforcement and ones with "420" in their gamertag was really interesting. Any more insights about cops playing a game about committing massive crimes come out of those interviews?

With you being such a big F1 fan, any chance a documentary on iRacing could happen some day? Also, after seeing how awesome the feature on the Grand Theft Auto crew was, any chance one on other groups will happen (like, the fuel rats in Elite Dangerous.)? That was a seriously fun episode to watch.
