Patron Q&A #9 - Live* From E3 2017

YOUTUBE LINK:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwx4715BeCw

Hey folks,

E3 is dead. Long live E3. Between organizing upcoming projects, editing the latest one, and generally showing my face on various stages and streams, it's been an incredibly busy E3 over here. But that doesn't mean I don't have the time to grab a beer, turn on the fire and have a little chat with the folks who made this all possible.

On this Q&A we talk about the electronic expo, Final Fantasy 14, chasing scoops and flying away again.

Patron Q&A #9 - Live* From E3 2017

I really like the current pace. I think it makes each main doc feel special when they roll around, and with the smaller bitesize content every now and then to fill the gaps I think it's a really great approach. When you look at all the content over a one year period, it's really impressive. As a new patron I can't speak to the behind the scenes stuff, but I am very excited to dive into it all.

Really enjoying the pace of the docs; don't think you should burn yourself out by doing too much. The idea of more behind the scenes stuff or weekly updates is nice, or even just general daily stuff! Really proud of how far Noclip has come, and I'm super excited to stray part of this in the future :)

Casey's video I've mentioned. Start at 6:13, he touches on his experience using camera and different types of "shots" to set the scene. https://youtu.be/Q980C74SdYQ

Danny, Awesome update. I guess I'll jump straight into feedback to make the post more structured: - love the setting. Your apartment is cool but I must say seeing a different background was cool. Especially the freaking fireplace in CA?? And that hexagon-y, what I assume is a side table. Maybe while you're at home - pick different spots outside? Or maybe leverage that "museum" space? - I think the pace between the documentaries is perfect. Being realistic - we all have other things we watch and you know better than us how much of new content people produce these days between all streaming services and YouTube. I think you will make more impact by producing the same volume but improving gradually the quality and sophistication of that content. Again - I vote strongly against more stuff :) because at some point it will be hard to watch it if there is a lot going on and I'd have to start skipping certain items. - what I like is seeing documentaries, seeing BTS, several Q&As, hangouts and occasional side projects like Profiles. That's perfect amount and variety. I frequently use an example of a restaurant - you know those "hole in a wall" places that have 10 items on the menu but they mastered them. And compare that to diners that have 100+ items but they are ok to mediocre in quality at most. That's my philosophy through life in general - staying that "master of few". - have you considered to create more communication channels to maybe have a mini "soapbox segment"? I know you'll do more now with giant bomb, but it would be cool to hear your opinion on something major going down in the video games industry. Someone back in a day suggested to use instagram stories but I think I'd rather those be a bit more edited and thought through. But nothing of the quality of the docs or even BTS - lastly - watch Casey Neistat's episode on Vlogging. I don't think you need to learn about story telling or his approach to it because you have your own style and I like it, but one thing you can "steal" from him is his approach to handling camera while vlogging. What I'm trying to say - handled self-facing footage sometimes gets too shake-y. There might be a way for you to stabilize the frame while shooting. As always - love the project and feel honored to be part of it. Also - I need to go back and find my comment to your first documentary - I called it then - students should study using your docs - and I'm so pumped that it is finally happening!

You're doing great man. You're pushing out way more high quality vids than I would expect a two men team to be able to do, so just keep doing what you're doing! The behind the scénes are always a lot of fun, so I wouldn't mind seeing more of those, but only if you think you got something interesting to show. Seeing places you visit to go on location, like Tokyo, are always cool to see. As for games to do docs on, I hope MachineGames is up for a doc after they ship Wolfenstein 2 this year! Maybe it would also be cool, though super ambitious and something for in the long run, to have a doc around different studios around the world collaborating on the same games or franchise. Like on Assassins Creed or Call of Duty OR the studios of Bethesda helping each other out OR independent studios being hired to help out like Ninja Theory helping Studio Gobo on Disney Infinity and Splash Damage developing the multiplayer for Gears of War 4 while The Coalition does the rest OR even out sourcing studios. In general, studio collaboration most gamers aren't aware of. Like I said, something for in the long run. A small doc formed from things like this the developers you interviewed mention throughout the single game docs you do, though something like CoD could have a whole doc dedicated to itself. Speaking of CoD and Gears 4, a doc about the balance between single and multiplayer within the same game could be cool too. You could put Doom in a doc like that as well and even Wolfenstein, an FPS that explicitely chooses not to do that and stick to single player, which is pretty rare in this day and age. In general, though I like the single game docs a lot too, I'd like to see more docs about a topic that go over multiple games or games in general like the 'Rediscovering Mystery' doc. The Sessions are a more casual version of this, which are great as well, so keep doing those too, but I love your greatly edited and narrated docs the most. I realise those take a lot of time, but I can wait if it means I get the DOD quality stuff! ;) Well that got longer than expected. On the side, what would be the best time in the month to upgrade to a higher tier in the Patreon system?

Totally in that camp too!

Hi Danny, really enjoying the docs so far, the Doom design and music insight in particular. Next favourite for me was the Japan behind the scenes particularly as it showed a diff culture. Regular updates aren't important for me, though do love the Sessions vids too!

Thanks for answering my question! :D

I second a lot of what Kristopher is saying. I think the docs are stellar, and that's obviously your bread and butter. One thing that is becoming more clear to me as you move towards Year Two is that I miss you (that sounds weird). You tend to show your personality in Q&As and BTS stuff, and I think that makes that stuff really enjoyable. I used to love your Point series because I broadly agree with your views, and you have a real knack for putting things into words and making sense. Maybe I'm missing the point, but I'm starting to miss The Point.

On the last question(s). I really like that you put effort into behind the scenes and community interaction and updates. It's not something I can answer really easily but I'll try. You do more interaction and updates than most of any other Patreon creators I contribute to. And the exclusive nature of these really makes it feel even more worth it. Even though, it's the docs that I/we/me truly fund, the exclusive content is both bonus icing, as well as a reason to stay, if that makes sense. (?) Of the examples you gave, I would put myself in the I-would-love-more-BTS-and-Q&A-(the Japan video was amazing, you and Jeremy lost in a strange land could be regular TV series, lol)-but-don't-burn-yourself-out-on-it. I'm in that camp of people, I guess. I absolutely love the work you are doing. Keep it up! I am excited to see the FFXIV doc next week! (( PS - maybe reconsider camera angles when wearing shorts. ;P hahaha ))
