E3 2017 Q&A - Call for Questions!

Hello from Noclip E3 Headquarters!

It's already been a busy time down here in Los Angeles and E3 hasn't officially started yet. Most of the work has involved finishing off these Final Fantasy videos which are going live the second half of this week. But I've also been having meetings with folks about potential future projects, and attending media events like last night's fun at Bethesdaland.

Today I've got an appearance on Geoff Keighley's YouTube stage to break down the Ubisoft Press Conference, and a few more meetings, but since most of the press conferences are over I thought this would be the best time to start asking for questions for our next Q&A!

So - got questions? Send them in!

Questions about Final Fantasy, or E3 this year, or our future plans, or Kinda Funny, or whatever. Let me know!

In case you missed my twitter feed, the place we're staying in is absolutely bonkers so expect to see a lot of that in the video.

Danny

E3 2017 Q&A - Call for Questions!

Comments

Hey, bud. I have two questions if you don't mind. First question: I’m not aware with how prevalent non-disclosure agreements are in the games industry but is that something you ensure isn’t a factor before you commit to a documentary? Do you think a documentary that lives up to NoClip's standards could still be made for a subject that would have those limitations? E3 Question! How is the night life during E3? I've had hopes that there are countless bars filled with journalists and game developers drinking and chatting about games. Has this been your experience? Hope you had a fun E3, bud! All the best.

I love that series. For sure I'd love to do one on The Amiga but they've also tackled that one. So maybe....the Mega Drive? Yeah. That would be cool.

Noclip

Have you ever considered covering any of the big Mobile games? Things like Infinity Blade, Angry Birds, Monument Valley, The Room 1,2,3 ... etc?

AzraRillian

Is Phil Spencer the best thing to ever happen to Xbox?

Have you thought of interviewing Brendan Playerunknown Greene?

Have you considered doing an interview with Brendan Playerunknown Green?

Hello Danny, I would be really interested to hear from people who have gone from game critic to game developer. I think in our hearts we are all game critics and in our dreams we are all game developers and I'd love to hear from people who have actually made this jump. What did they struggled with and how do they believe their past experiences benefited them. Off my head, Jim Rossignol of Big Robot and Greg Kasavin of Supergiant Games are two. Great job with Noclip, keep it up! Cheers, Nick.

Danny, Now that this is your 1st full year with No Clip, are industry folks at E3 starting to know you you as No Clip and not GameSpot's primary host personality? Thoughts on DOOM VR? -Colby in Seattle

Colby Perry

As a big id software fan, did you enjoy the last Wolfenstein game? (I loved it!). What do you hope for the new game?

What is your biggest surprise of e3??

Hey Danny, You tried getting in touch with mighty mouse yet? Have fun at E3

Give Microsoft's pivot following the transition from the Don Matrik to Phil Spencer the platform has gone from strength to strength with numerous platform updates focussed on putting smiles on faces rather than solely driving revenue (backwards compatibility, the launch of the X to take back the powerhouse crown, the play anywhere programme etc). However as an Xbox user the cold true is that outside of driving games (where forza is largely without a credible rivel) the Xbox platform doesn't have the quality of library that PS4 does. Horizon saw guerilla, a first party studio allowed to let Killzone lie and take a risk on a breathtaking new IP. The parallel for this is 343 who have clung to Halo like a safety blanket, stumbled with Halo 4 and seriously failed with Halo 5. While Gear 4 struck the balance perfectly between franchise heritage respect and setting up reinvention, the franchise can't carry the platform without inovator in the first party stable and letting Sony pick up 3rd party exclusive after 3rd party exclusive. The fans appreciate the amazing job Phil Spencer does but he needs to sort the gulf in library left in the wake of Don Matrik. This was the first year we could expect 1st party games green lit by Phil given development timelines but we didn't see them. Please get to the bottom of how Microsoft plans to tackle this before Xbox sinks into irrelevance.

Dearest Danny O'Dwyer Do you feel Anthem will have a brand synonymous with Xbox in the way Destiny does with Playstation even though both games are multi-platform? Or do you feel in a year's time we'll see Anthem on a PS4pro and it'll look as good if not close to? While the gameplay of Anthem looked cool, nothing about it struck me as impossible on a Playstation console, especially after Horizon: Zero Dawn (still the worst game title of all time). Have a wonderful E3. The place you're staying looks awesome. -Kento

Hey Danny, after having this time with noclip to distance yourself and your mindset from that of the enthusiast press- do you see a change in how you look at and experience an event like E3?

Tory Thompson

Hey Danny, All your docs so far have been made about the behind the scenes of games after they've come out/been out for a while. Have you entertained the idea that you could potentially invest in a long term production where you can chronicle the development of a game in real time? I know that'd be a huge investment of your time (so maybe a studio nearby in the Bay Area would be the only one feasible) but it'd be really cool to see you getting that perspective! Thanks for your hard work! Amir

Hey Danny, thanks again for combining my two favorite things, Games & Documentaries. Was wondering, in general, are there specific game genres you avoid because you despise them or are bad at them? Personally I avoid turnbased strategy games because I can only plan ahead like 2 moves. Also, what genres of games do you like and/or come back to often? Thanks again, Sander

How is your experience with final fantasy 14 itself has been? As someone who has a mac ilevel dragoon and over 350 hours in the game id love to hear what a new person takes away from it. Especially someone who doesn't play mmos

Hello Danny, I was going to PM you this question but it might help others too. In your last Q&A you mentioned being sent resources for managing working from home (cabin fever) and I was wondering if you had any of them to recommend or share? Don't worry if you don't, though. All the best. Hope you're in a mentally better place now.

Loving Noclip so far ! You really are creating content that doesn't exist in many places, and I find the stories behind the games just as fascinating as the stories themselves. Was wondering when you go to do these interviews, do you have any influence on who you meet when you're there? or is it up to the studios to decide. Also if there's any particular departments that you find the most interesting when it comes to game development. Thanks !

Now that you've visited E3 on your own - what were the major differences that you've noticed in your experience (compared to GS days)? Anything stood out from a new perspective?

Tohir Tillyaev

Hey, Danny! Docs you made so far were about breakthroughs and comebacks. These were success stories. There are, however, a lot of interesting post mortem kind of stories that deserve exploration. Like, whatever happened to Command & Conquer series. Do you think you will ever be able to cover one of those? I expect that can be a lot more difficult, because people (and companies!) would be less eager to talk about their mishaps.

How do you see the next few years going for VR? Will advances like wireless, foveated rendering, and high-resolution VR displays give it the push it needs? Also, does Fallout 4 VR appeal to you? Thanks!

Cody Armacher

Thus far it seems like all your documenteries have been done with the cooperation of the developers in question. Do you think you'll ever make a documentary with a company who is combative of the documentary process? I'm picturing something like the Kojima/Konami saga or a deep dive into a troubled or poorly reviewed game where the publisher/studio doesn't want the publicity. also, congrats on the Kinda Funny announcement, was great seeing you at KFL3 (I was up front and center, one of your tennis balls smacked right into me and I had the guys autograph it)

Peter Karadimas

I just wanna know when this NoClip Meetup is happening?! Can't wait to see yah bud. P.S. Will you do E3 hot take videos like you did last year? Maybe a quick recap with thoughts/faves?

I'm glad you can easily copy text from previous comments: My gaming started with the ZX Spectrum, so I really enjoyed From Bedrooms to Billions. Have you seen it? How did you rate it as a documentary? Also are you considering a documentary/documentaries on hardware rather than software? If so which system would you pick? That's probably too many questions in one post, but what the heck!

Simon Skittrell

Hey Mr. O'Dwyer! Happy to see you're having a great time! I'm sure you'll get asked this a lot but: What are your personal highs and lows from all the shows so far? Have fun and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do this week!
