June Updates: E3, Final Fantasy, Kinda Funny & More

YOUTUBE Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kl6Pr71YeM0

Hey Patrons!

This is my final week in the office before heading to E3, so it's a pretty busy one. In fact, this month is super busy for Noclip. Not only are we launching out FINAL FANTASY XIV documentary series, but there will be plenty of Patron-exclusive E3 behind-the-scenes videos and more Noclip Sessions dropping this month too.

Not only that, but I'm exciting to finally talk about my new twice-weekly gig hosting a morning gaming news show over at Kinda Funny.  Details in the video.

Thanks so much for all the support the past month, it's been a tough edit but it's come out really well. Expect Q&A / Patron Hangout emails later in the week. As ever, if you have questions or thoughts please stick them below!

Talk soon!

Danny

I know you've mentioned you are looking into it. But I hope you can get your 'out of the house' work spaces figured out. (coffee shops or coop or something else)

Hey! Excited for the FFXIV doc as I am a big fan of the game and want to hear more of the fascinating story! Quick question for you: how did the FFXIV doc come together? Did S-E come to you to tell this story? It seems like the timing of this doc around the timing of their new expansion benefits them a lot, so I'm wondering if they came to you for this as a bit of viral promotion. Anyway thanks and keep rocking the docs!

Craig Parker

I think we understand. You're great at streaming but must be a lot tougher than you make it look. The longer you leave the op-ed thing though the more of a mountain it will have become in everyone's minds. We don't expect perfection. I really don't like the existing KF formats so I hope you bring something fresh to them.

Can wait for all this good stuff! :D

Piotr Kostecki

Thanks for everything Danny! Want to make sure I'm clear on how awesome I think the work you're doing is before I sound a smidge negative, but I feel like KF became an institution on themselves, much like the IGN they left. I feel they represent the low quality bombardment of non-information that's put games journalism in a bit of bad position in the last couple years. To me, Noclip was an answer to exactly their kind of media, so a well produced thought out, well written structure with substance. I feel like Colin left for some of those reasons besides the fiasco... Just my two cents, I don't think I'll tune in to support their channel, despite simply loving your work and your take on the industry. Doubt you agree since I'm sure you're all friends and you will be collaborating, but much like many on the interweb I felt like expressing myself into the void.

So hyped for you on KF, getting that time to reset mentality a little, and quite excited to hear the FF XIV doc is opening doors in Japan. The way western games dominate the market now it will be nice to see a big doc on Japan. I feel the way western game eclipsed The Japanese market has a bigger story there than I am aware of.

Thanks for the update! Out of curiosity, any idea yet where you'd like to live after Oakland? I thought you mentioned NYC right after Dan Ryckert moved there, but that doesn't really check the 'cheaper' box.

Just wanted to stop by and say super excited about the KF stuff. More Danny is always good.

Hey Mr. O'Dwyer! Thanks for the sneak peaks on the video and as for the Kinda Funny collaboration, I couldn't be happier. I can't thank you enough for the brief minute of your time in speaking with me during the pre-show on the upper balcony (for reference I mentioned your DOOM series was my favorite). You crushed your brief spot during the show and I'm super excited for all of your endeavors! Thanks again sir.

Thanks so much. And mate, Noclip is my baby. We're doing some cool stuff with it this year. I would never have taken up this role if I thought it would negatively impact Noclip. Not a chance.

Noclip

Thanks so much. Every time I go into town to do the Bombcast or Kinda Funny I come back with ideas and energy. So I'm really looking forward to doing this twice a week. It's already made me feel less isolated.

Noclip

Don't worry, no not at all. There are going to be weeks where I'm not in town and they'll have somebody else fill in. We have plenty of AAA games coming up. The next big shoot is in Europe this summer. We have 3 AAA game docs coming up.

Noclip

Thanks for the question, I think it's pretty fair. To your first point, it's a pretty small commitment, to be honest. No production time on my end, just 45 mins of live chat during the morning. Creating something like The Point takes days of production time. Like 15-20 work hours. So it's totally different. I weighed up the personal benefits to my mental wellbeing, along with the funding bonuses and it was a no brainer. Plus, I miss talking about games on the daily, and I just can't do it here right now. I have nobody to talk to here. I work solo. And streaming was driving me mad. I have plans for the op-ed show, and more streams once we move out of here, but have not given a date for this very reason. When it launches, it will launch consistently. My passion for creating work that isn't funded by advertisers remains. Without getting into the specifics, that reality will continue. You'll hear about Noclip's broader developmental plans in the coming months. Until then, we've got docs galore, and plenty of behind-the-scenes stuff.

Noclip

To be fair, I think there's a world of difference between a fully-produced op-ed show—with the associated location shooting , editing, research and a million other considerations—to a twice weekly, in and out radio show with friends. A happy Danny is a good Danny!

Liam Harvey

Hi Danny. Sounds like Kinda Funny will be good for you. It also sounds like a huge contractual commitment, especially if you're hosting. I think patrons might feel more relaxed about it if there was a firm date for promised features like your new op-ed show. It's odd to think that anyone wanting their regular dose of Danny on screen might be better served by subscribing to KF as a result of this decision. Have you made your peace with 'ad-supported games coverage'?

I admit I turned away from KF when Colin left but knowing you are working with these guys I may look them up again, hope this does not distract you from keep turning out all this great content. Keep up the good work Danny.

Jason Tilling

Will being on KF prevent you from going on big trips and doing the BIG documentaries? Cause DOOM and Rocket League docs were amazing, and hope that your KF gig doesn't cause these to go away or be less frequent.

Matt Matlock

Aww Danny, you're a legend. Everything NoClip sounds as exciting as ever of course—as far as FFIV goes, I'm in the camp of "never played, probably never going to play, been TEMPTED to play it but utterly fascinated to hear about that game's development story. Much excite. But I really wanted to say that I'm glad you've got a KF spot with the Games Daily podcast. SO GOOD for you! As a shut in editor myself, it's soooo valuable to get out of the house and chat nonsense with friends. Happy for you. All the best!

Liam Harvey

Awesome! Love that you'll be dropping by the KF Games place more. Can't wait for the new doc obviously too. Great work! 👍
