So please enjoy this slightly unhinged chaos and me struggling and yelling at an inanimate object :)

When I sign up for someone's Patreon, it's because I want them to have a bit of stable income when the various algorithms aren't being kind, or for times of year when art sales go down, etc. What they do with that money is up to them, same as any money that anyone earns at any job! Personally, I joined your Patreon because your YouTube videos are my very favorite thing to watch and I'm happy to pay a little each month to get to watch more of them, no physical rewards needed.

You didn't set up a 'go fund me' with a story about poverty or health problems, then use the funds for vacation. We subscribe to your patreon so you can earn the money to do the things you want to - for the channel or literally anything else you want to spend your money on. If I buy a painting, the artist doesn't owe me an explanation for how they responsibly spent the money. We subscribe because we love your content and want to support you. Damn the haters.

Patreon is literally part of your job. That earns you money. To spend on stuff. Does the commenter not use the money from THEIR job to go on vacation? If they’ve discovered a magic vacation money tree and they’re not sharing with the rest of the class that’s just not cool. Take those vacations, spend that money, you work hard for it AND are saving responsibly!

2024-06-12 03:34:47 +0000 UTCI completely understand about the vacation thing, I'm a wedding photographer which means I take relatively decent sums of money from happy couples to photograph their special day. First of all I love my job, so there's mega guilt that goes along with actually being paid for actually loving what I do, but then there's even worse guilt when my couples chat with me and genuinely ask me if I've got anything fun coming up in the winter (my off-season) and I know I'm going on a big holiday (like this year I have 2 weeks booked in Korea). I feel like I'm saying "thanks for giving me lots of your money, I'm using it to go on an expensive holiday!!" But even though my brain makes me anxious about this, I also know that it's complete FOOEY. Because that money is my WAGES for doing an incredibly stressful job which means I miss out on every single summer weekend as well as countless special family and friend events while supplying these lovely couples with very precious memories of their own friends and families that will last longer than a lifetime. So I really SHOULDN'T feel guilty about using some of that money for a holiday AT ALL - and you shouldn't either. My plumber friend and my lawyer friend are never berated for using their own wages to go on holiday, which also comes direct from their consumers, so why should we, with creative jobs, be berated for using ours in the same way!?

The bonus videos etc on Patreon are a BONUS, and actually add to your workload. How you spend your money, is none of my business. I've never been out of the country, so this would be huge for me. It is to help you run your business and part of that is paying yourself and taking vacation. I want the '"businesses" I support to be able to treat their employees enough to take care of themselves, and vacations are part of that. Maybe look into FI/RE (financial independence/retire early) if you are worried it is all going to go away? Maybe it would help you feel a little more secure, although I know what you mean.

I used their website to find a Husqvarna dealer, and they had certified secondhand machines which saved me thousands. I specifically got this one too because it accommodates the largest hoop size which was important to me. Side note: although it does embroidery, it is also just an amazing sewing machine too

I'd even say that going on holiday with the patreon money is investing in your content. You need the outlet and the inspiration that one gets from traveling to be up for new chalenges and to recharge your creativity. But even if that wasn't the case, youtube/patreon is your job. I work in the film industry (I'm a union tailor) and I know the work that goes into creating content, which usually involves multiple departments with different unions and and army of PAs.
