Q&A While I Do Stuff!
Added 2024-02-21 14:59:15 +0000 UTC
Haallooo Fellowship! I've been a bit MIA this ol' month of Feb-Rue-Ary, so I wanted to do a bit of a longer, chit-chatty video!
I answered some of your questions, cleaned up my set from the last video, and got ready to film another video (also stopped for some Frodo kisses in there)
Get cozy and get your hot beverages of choice ready, LOVE YA!!
I need to learn the wizardry of cleaning (and de-hoarding) whilst being a neurodivergent person!

I'm okay with watching you clean videos :3 I have ADHD so cleaning is very difficult for me, I use body doubling as a technique to help me clean. My brain is mean so I can only watch the ones that are actual messes and not someone's immaculate house where they just wipe everything down:/ but not the ones so big that I feel overwhelmed!
I need a goblin stash, not pixie dust or a dragon's hoard!
So thank you very much for making these videos!
Clean with Me videos are a whole genre on youtube X3
(also very helpful for motivation for people with poor mental health/neurodivergentness that make it hard to tidy things)

I do enjoy some short form content, but I find it is too much of a time sink. I uninstalled tiktok years ago for that reason (and most other social media) but still have YouTube for long form videos, and it pushes shorts so much they're hard to avoid! I do have a YouTube timer (from the settings) now that interrupts me regularly, and if that happens whilst I'm watching shorts I close the app, Vs ignore it for long form.

I watch a lot of video essays or D&D campaigns, so long-form content is an absolute yes for me.

I love your long form. I manage to avoid the attention sapping short form stuff by not being on social media. But my serotonin gets a massive boost when I see one of you videos on you tube or patreon because it's time for a cuppa and watching something beautiful being created out of the chaos. Thank you for all you do.

A mod-ieval (mod-evil?) video would be so great! And I'm also tired of the short-form content, I never liked it, I'm happy you're still focusing mostly on long-form!

I just took my mom’s oldish Bernina sewing machine in for a tuneup. Need to take lessons on how to sew with it because I learned on a machine that went forward backward and zigzagged.
I also wanted to mention that when you made your set, I love that you used cardboard and duct tape. Those are my two favorite mediums to use when creating. Years ago I did prom for my daughter’s small alternative high school. I looked through dance catalogs and figured I could make most of the ideas with my husband‘s help. They had this fun balloon tree that everyone was standing in front of for photos, I thought that is the easiest thing to make and so I made it and it was beautiful. Unfortunately I made it 8 feet tall and so when the kids stood in front of it to get their pictures taken lol all you could see was the tree trunk.

You now have an airbrush. Book dress. But make it better!
Oh! To add to what I was doing while watching the vid; I have a cell phone holder on one of my cabinet doors in my kitchen (in case I'm making a new recipe from my phone!) And I just put my phone there and was watching your video while making dinner!

Thank you for the extensive answer! I definitely do recognize soms of the things you mentioned, like having a tough time getting started because of the worry it's not going to work out well. I have to admit it's one of the main reasons why I just make stuff for myself now, to take the outside pressure off at least.
Revisiting old projects would be super cool, it would also make it really clear how much you have learned and grown over the years. Very motivational!

The book dress aka trash can corset might be a fun one to revisit. The first was beautiful but as you stated it wasn’t the most comfortable or flattering, it’d be nice to see how you might approach it now. (Plus more opportunity to possibly paint book spines).

I totally agree with you on preferring long form content! And I hope more people get back into it soon because I love all of your videos and will play a mix of them while I’m doing my own creative projects and it makes me happy to feel like I’m being crafty with someone else. Bring on the longer projects!

My tip for confidence, both in wearing cosplay and fashion: the first day, PRETEND you're the sort of person who wears this stuff like it's nbd. Then, the next time you wear it, guess what? You've already worn this, you magically now ARE the sort of person who wears this like it's nbd!

For the questioner who asked about plus size Victorian/Edwardian, try Black Snail Patterns (on Etsy); Rebecca Posey (Pocket full of Poseys) is really good, she is plus size, and uses a lot of Black Snail patterns, does Victorian/Edwardian clothing.

I love being able to see you as a real person! It’s so nice!
I was thinking for the “but make it better” I wonder if you have any projects that you started and the aborted. Like you were really excited about, you were going to make a video on it, and then were like “nah.” I’d be interested in seeing those projects, or see you come back around that project with a new perspective that makes you excited to come back to it. Like a revisit? A remix?
Also, please do make a video about the modeval style. I am intrigued. Also interested on how/where to find my own of that style.
Love you forever
Sam
2024-02-22 11:02:03 +0000 UTC
Personal style is not something that happens over night, you evolve... like a Pokemon, into a new form every now and then. I started in my 20s with 40s/30s vintage things but make it goth, later played around with Victoriana and Steam Punk, had a Regency phase and now in my 40s I dress like it's 1760 and I'm a peasant.
Just wear things, even if they feel weird, at least one, twice to make sure, a third time of you like it(to paraphrase Mae West). I was sure I did not have a hat face, wearing a hat for the fist time was SO WEIRD, and I did not feel confident at all, nor the second time, but it was a look I wanted to go for so I wore it and now I feel kinda naked when I find myself out and about with a hat.
So yeah just wear things for a bit see if it works for you, if not you've learned something. I still don't think I've reached my "final form" but that just means I have something to look forward to ^^

I have loved watching your sewing journey. I remember watching your earlier videos and the struggle of pattern reading. As a mostly self taught sewist with an obsession with historical costuming it has been great to see you persevere to the point of being able to offer advice to others.

Thank you so so much for answering my long af question thread. I had so many and I know so many others asked a lot of what I did but man the suggestions for plus size stuff is a god send!! Thank you so so much!! It’s been frustrating since I had so many simplicity patterns just to find that size 18 is really like … a size medium or large like yikes.
I definitely would love a tailors dummy will have to try and find one second hand or cheaper since I don’t have too many funds for that and my sewing machine is 30 years old and needs serviced so should probably just buy a new one lol

I’ve been around since the early hair tutorial days with the much grainier camera haha but you were still cool to me 😂 I went through a very similar pin up to cottage core / npc pipeline so your channel has always been a vibe. I even moved into a 160 year old house a year before you did which was hilarious to my husband and me. Keep up the great content in whatever form it comes!

For getting started with sewing especially as plus sized girlie I would highly recommend charm patterns by Gertie. Her patreon is amazing and is how I taught myself to sew. All the oatterns have full sew along videos and she had a great size range as well as cup sizes on her patterns!!! An absolute godsend for busty babes who want to not have to modify everything to accommodate their bust.

*Butt Naked Betta?
Love the idea of revisiting your old work. Maybe revise the mushroom hat? Have you looked up "japanese glowing mushrooms" ? Just MAGICAL. Jellyfish of the land! Add LED's, crystals, moss. Nightshoot? The following isn't the actual mushroom, but super cute. https://i.etsystatic.com/12709031/r/il/1f2f2e/3231080606/il_fullxfull.3231080606_enek.jpg

A suggestion for "But Make It Better," I'd be very interested to just see how many of your "regular clothing" items that you've made that you actually still wear regularly. Like your pinafores and dresses and blouses. And for ones you don't wear, what is it about those items that keep you from wanting to wear them and trying to fix those issues.

I have nothing but Tiffany inspired lamps and know how daunting but rewarding making them can be even though I've only ever seen the process, so time is not a friend especially whilst trying to make viral content as well. Sad that you may have to lessen the time for your passion just to survive in this crazy overpriced world we live in! Sending you good vibes for a hopeful turnaround! Ooof, I FEEL the burnout around social media. I went full-time as a stained glass artist three years ago, and at first it was great! I had more commissions than I had time fo,r and my shop updates sold immediately. But as time has passed, it's become harder and harder. There seems to be very little middle ground. You either make it big or you don't. I had more engagement at 3K than I do at 15K. So now I'm on the path of back to full-time office work in order to save for school so that I can be half therapist/half artist. I'm hoping one will support the other and that I can free myself of the algorithm and just make the art that I wanna make, how I wanna make it 💖

I feel the exhaustion of short-form content. I've always preferred long-form and I wish there was more space for it on current platforms. I say feel free to make even longer chatty videos (or w/e tickles your fancy) for at least Patreon! Always love when a creator I follow just casually chats about other things that they're into/thinking about!

Hi!!! To the person who asked about plus size patterns - use the site Sewist.com - it allows you to generate any pattern you want in your EXACT measurements.
