The pakeha went hog on the native lumber and decided to try to import the faster growing evergreens from the US. Rotorua was the heart of that experiment, to my recollection. They planted a large number of different varieties to decide which ones they wanted to plant.
You'll see random allotments all over the country where farmers have decided to create investment parcels of pines for later logging. It's super weird. I appreciate how much national park they have, but I was shocked at just how much of their country is just desolate pasture for meat animals. Just a wild land use policy.
