Brazil Photos/Updates, Etc

Just got back from working and filming in Brazil. Took 8,000 photographs, learned many new genera. Headed to Cullowhee Native Plant Conference in North Carolina to do a panel talk on the 19th. Will slowly be uploading Brazil photos to the website once I get the time. Have been going non-stop since late May. My daughter had an emergency reaction to chemo five days ago but is doing better now, for the time being. I am currently getting over a respiratory infection so can't go see her before I head to their conference since she has no immune system. Her prognosis is good and she can probably leave the hospital today or tomorrow. Life is somewhat scattered right now. Thanks for the ongoing support.

In the meantime enjoy the photos of the drought-deciduous succulent tree Asteraceae, Wunderlichia mirabilis and some others, including a Podocarpus we found on a remote sky island above tropical deciduous forest in Minas Gerais.

Ah, yes, the seasonally dry tropical forests. I read a book on that and this is where I learned that there are so many words I have no idea what they mean. Like riparian and so, so many others. Brazil is nice but I can't deal with flying over what is left of the amazon. Looks like they aren't clear cutting everything, now I see parallel lines of cuts. Perhaps this is a way to manage so that natives can return one can only hope? But why cut it in the first place, damn it? I keep telling my wife I refuse to go with her any more to visit her family but she keeps forcing me to. I hate myself for going anyways. I am praying for you and your daughter.

Been there and it sucks. Glad to hear the prognosis is good. Thanks for everything you do. Your work is one of the few things that gives me hope in this fucked up world.

Staying positive makes the meds work better. Sleep well(take serotonin), exercise daily(walking), eat healthy food, and staying positive. I went from stage 4 with 2 weeks to live to cured so I know the your daughter can climb this mountain too.
