I shot this at a B and B with very little natural light from a window behind me. The room was small so I used my Nikon 50mm lens . ISO was 500, 1/60 sec, and oddly at f/1.6. I have a problem with the Nikon bodies. My hand seems to sometimes move the knob and the aperture gets changed when I am not careful. No big deal here. I probably need to set up my camera function buttons differently to keep this from happening. This was shot with a Nikon Z8.

I will add that this old canvas backdrop is in pretty bad shape and should be retired. But with Photoshops new ability to so perfectly separate the model from the background it only takes a moment to clean up the backdrop in post.

Nikon Z8 with Nikon 50mm f/1.2S
ISO 64, SS 1/80th, f/4.0
This image was lit using Godox LED lighting.
Main light had a ten inch fresnel lens from about twelve feet away overhead. There was a fill light from behind camera position passing through a large white flat diffuser. Two additional LED lights were from each side behind the model in a 12" x 48" strip box diffused on front.

Vassanta is such an exceptional talent in front of a camera. All the images in this session were strictly natural light filtering in through windows and door in these old rustic buildings.

This very simple nude of Kailee is in my opinion a great example of how beautiful the morning light and her lovely body blend just after she steps out of a hot shower. Her skin is just so perfect it almost glows.
Nikon 85mm at f/1.2
The wide aperture turns the background into a painterly bokeh.

My two favorite models had been asking to take a quick trip to Florida to the Gulf side of the peninsula to do a shoot and I finally took time from my work schedule to make it happen. It was such a great trip even through it was very short. It is so difficult to book a spot inside any of the state parks that I only came up with a place to tent camp. But the day we left a cabin became available and it's good it did because temps at night were mid 40's. When we arrived at the cabin my very firs...

Relatively harsh light doesn't mean poor images if you look to create a more artsy feel instead of a glamour portrait look.

Warm weather is upon us and we begin another year of outdoor adventures. Our first trip of the year to the barrier islands was loads of fun and we managed to create some beautiful shots even with harsh light.

To deal with the harsh direct overhead sunlight a lazy yet workable solution is to have the model look directly up to the sky which fills their face with light. Once in a while I will use supplemental flash for fill but I really pre...

I was meeting a friend for dinner a few weeks ago and he asked where should we meet. I said I wanted to meet somewhere where I could grab a shot of a pelican sitting on a piling sticking out of the water with the sun setting in the background. He laughed at the specific idea but I had a place in mind. I brought along a 600mm f/4.0 lens for the shot and captured this just before we went to the restaurant to eat. Sometimes we get lucky.

I was actually working with a model out on an island in the Gulf on a day with very low thick clouds and I shot this while getting set up. It was shot with a ten stop neutral density filer making for a very long exposure on a tripod to capture the movement of the surf and clouds. When I started working with the model I was able to have her pose extremely still and steady although the wind was blowing hard and moved her hair around a bit. I ended up liking this shot as is and have sold several...

This is an unedited (cropped) image which I shot using an Artisan .095 lens I bought and gave to Kailee for her camera. A better demo for the lens would have shot something with a bokeh background. I was just explaining to Kailee some details about when and how to use this little lens. For the money these Artisan lenses are amazing. and fun to play with. Kailee loves photography and a couple years ago I bought her a Nikon starter camera with a couple of lenses. She does some amazing sports im...
