Dry Limestone Prairies of Austin Texas

In this episode of Crime Pays, we visit a particularly cool habitat known as the dry limestone prairie, and are introduced to a white flowered member of the sunflower family that is especially adapted to growing on these harsh, nearly soil-less plains. Silphium albiflorum is a Texas Endemic, meaning it only grows within the geopolitical boundaries of the state of Texas. We also see a number of very cool milkweed species including Asclepias viridiflora and Asclepias asperula. And in the common native "weed" species Solanum rostratum, we observe two very cool floral traits - heteranthy and enantiostyly - and give an in-depth explanation of each. We also check out a phenomenon known as "extrafloral nectaries" on the common legume Chamaecrista fasciculata.

This 40 minute, profanity-laden bit will teach you more than any single college botany class ever could. I'm not sniffing my own farts, here...we cover a lot here. And we see some really f*cking cool plants.

Hey Joey. Got your book, love it! Are the leaves of the S. albiflorum oriented in a North/South direction, like the leaves S. laciniatum? I think I learned one new concept in my Fundies of Botany class, and it's the phylotactic spiral.

Nice of that guy with helping digging so you can try rescue those plants...

I grew up in San Antonio, and have traveled around Texas quite a lot. I love learning about the plants that I've been surrounded by my whole life. Thanks for the video! If you get a chance, go to the Enchanted Rock state natural area region. It's a granite dome sticking up out of the limestone hill country - surely a refugium for some groovy species not seen anywhere else in the Hill Country. Same for Lost Maples area. Love the new drone footage!

The whole eastern hill country is just so incredible. Thanks for the video!

I think that you want to bottle the fragrance of the flower and call it Parfum de Pnues Brules de la Maison de Joey.
