Here's a preliminary viewing of this massive bastard of a video I just finished. This thing sucked to edit, and I honestly should've cut a lot more than I did, but it felt criminal to leave any of this shit out.

In this episode we interview Russel Wagner, a skilled and meticulous plant breeder who specializes in the family Aizoaceae (aka Mesembryanthemaceae), the family of Lithops, Conophytums and Ice Plants.

Russel is a bounty of information and doesn't just grow these things, but has spent weeks exploring the habitat in South Africa where they grow.

Your feedback is welcome on this one... I had to cut the pixels down to 1080 because an hour long video at 4k was simply too large of a file for me to want to deal with.

Feel free to comment here or on the video.

Thanks, GFY 😘

Russell seems like such a cool dude, and if one day I am bi-curious I would love to meet him. Wonderful breakfast/laundry episode. The tiny diversities really add up to being so many interesting shapes and colors that altered my perception of the Lithops!

That was great, hour long videos are great too. A lot of botany fans are also growers too, so always fun to see others. Just wish my space was as hygienic!

That was delicious! Everything in the video was great, glad we got to see such a great collection in good detail. I had no idea plant skylights was a thing, mind expanded!! One of our favorites of you deep dives!

why on earth would I not want to watch this? EDIT (after finishing the whole episode): WHY ON EARTH would I not want to watch this! amazing!!

Also this has since inspired me to sow a lot of my mesemb seeds I've been sitting on.

Nice! Your friends are fascinating - loved the one at the mushroom lab a few weeks back too. You passed by some really fantastical ones on that table though... maybe it should have been longer. I have to go look up fenestrate leaves.

Phenomenal ❤️🔥Anyone know if Russel has any public socials?

This was nice. I didn't notice that an hour had passed or that there were significant edits made. I feel like it was a good introduction to a very cool family and human.

I watched the whole thing. A big part of the appeal of your content is just the pleasure of listening to someone talk about something they know a lot about and have an obvious passion for. I do like botany a lot, but just kicking back and listening to two people geek out over something they love so much is always time well-spent. You'll always learn something, and their happiness is contagious.

Awesome to see you touring such a splendorous dungeon and great to have someone who can keep up with you in a video.

Growing Ruderalis hybrids from seed has become quite popular since legal home cultivation happened here in Montana - I've sent this to a number of friends as a primer on pheno expression from seed and how variable it can be. This is some fantastic stoner knowledge here, too!

1080 was fine on my end - beamed from my phone to a 32 inch TV.

Every second of this hour was captivating.

The production values were great, the interviewee incredibly knowledgeable ( I wondered too about the regional concentration of curly wurley leaves on unrelated plants and horizontal transmission of a virus is a good theory). The questions were intelligent, relevant and flowing and 1080 was fine on an iPad. You’ve taken me down the cactus dungeon with my growing collection and now you’ve started me on mesems. Bastard.

Les

For my purposes, the 1080 seems fine.

Thanks everyone. Is it worth re-making it in 4k? Is the difference that noticeable?

Totally enjoyed it! Pretty mind blowing and cause for contemplation of the whole life on earth thing.

Another vote for this being enjoyable. Nicely edited, fascinating content.

I enjoyed this.

Enjoyed it, barely noticed the 1hr duration

Really interesting video

i love these brain-picking videos. it’s gneiss to have a bit of variation from the typical botanizing videos. whether it’s you fucking around with Al or picking the brain of an expert in their work place like alan rockefeller

The editing on this is excellent. It flows seamlessly; the discussions are on point and do not drag on. I would enjoy seeing more of these in the regular schedule where I could digest this on a lunch break or a lazy weekend. Great work, looking forward to seeing more content like this in the future.
