Viewer Feedback Appreciated

Hello All,
I still have about 100 GB of video from South Africa to edit and put together, among a dozen or so seemingly monumental bullshit tasks going on in life right now. It's a daunting amount of footage to edit and most of the videos would end up being an hour long each. I'm thinking of instead breaking the videos up into roughly 15 minute sections instead. Typically one video consists of an entire day's botanizing, with only one intro and outro per episode. So each 15 minute segment would instead likely start and stop with a black screen or map image and maybe 15 seconds of narration to set the stage for habitat, elevation, rough location on a map, etc.

What would you all prefer - that I keep the hour-long episode format, which seems brutal... Or is it easier to watch a days botanizing broken up into 3 or 4 15 minute segments showcasing maybe 6/7 species each?

Thanks in advance.

J

I'm a fan of all you do..We have similar interests and I don't get out much so whatever you post is great plants. evolution.. geology!!! social comments and video and your own trials and tribulations

Love the idea of the short video with a brief into and map to set the stage. Give us an idea of where the video and environment is and its place in the world. Obviously the hour long videos are great too

I feel like if I want some short watching I can go to Facebook and catch one every once in a bit but I really am down with a spot for longer format videos. Seems like 35 minutes or so is palatable easily too.

Yes

I think both formats have value, and people will still watch them, regardless. Although I am not a YouTuber myself, I feel like the long videos might be intimidating for uninitiated viewers. Some might see the length of the longer videos and decided to watch them "later." But here is what it comes down to: Work/Life balance. In my experience, it's easier to avoid burnout than it is to come back from it.

I like the long episodes. They provide a selective pressure that promotes longer attention spans.

James

Would love any vids, have watched you for hours and loved every minute just glad you had an amazing trip and look forward to whatever is easier for you man

Colette Haskell

I would prefer 15 minute episodes. It would be nice if they were grouped into playlists on the channel's page.

Alexandre Comeau

Yeah, great stuff - all appreciated, but easier to shut out the world for 15 minutes than an hour. Thanks for all you do!

Jayme Seehafer

I like a mix of lengths, sometimes I want a quick fix, sometimes I want to sit down and watch for a bit. I think a balance would be great!

I can squeeze a 15 minute video into a lunch break, so I end up watching the longer ones broken up like that anyway

Rose

Long or short videos, maybe should depend on what the subject is about and how much illustration you think we need to get ... no wait, might as well do shorter and simpler and hope for the best.

I vote shorter too. And then if they’re grouped in a “South Africa” playlist, ppl can binge longer if they want

i second this

I like the idea of the 15 minute videos

What ever works for you, Joey. I prefer the long format, because I'm obsessed with botany and geography, but the short ones are great, also.

April Hughes

Whatever is less work is perfect. Seriously.

Esoteric

Short sounds good.

Linus Lancaster

i vote for shorter. gotta respect the viewer's attention span.

Kevin Shlosberg

I'm gonna have to go with the short format.

Dominique Frost

I'll be honest, seeing the 50 minute timestamp sometimes means your vids end up on the watch later list for quite a while. Shorter videos with a tighter focus would let me bang out 1 or 2 in a series, then go do something else. It might help with your channel growth too if that's something you care about. I just make sure to keep the patreon donation active cuz i wanna make sure theres always some botanizing to return to when I get around to it!

Patrick Kroyak

Whatever is easiest for you! So grateful for the education and comedy. And TBH living vicariously through your travels!

Daniel Pirone

I think editing style is unique and takes the audience into consideration already. Longer videos are cool when they jump to different locations or you’re talking to someone. Otherwise the short ones are great for saving time to tag along using wiki search and shit.

I would like to see how the shorter piece with a Map & habitat intro would work out. I like the idea of setting the context and then seeing what survives/evolved there. You do a very good job of connecting the abiotic with the botanic in an evolution by natural selection context. I could see how the map/location & habitat intro approach might provide a very tight story in that sense.

Jay Holmes

Shorter is good. You are a real dense watch. ;)

Shorter format for my ADHD addled brain, please!

Bigfoot Is Right Outside

I like both. Sometimes I like to watch your vids while I'm doing menial tasks at work and the longer format is great for that but I don't always have the time to watch a full vid so the shorter format would be nice for those times.

I don’t mind either way. Just wanted to add to the conversation that it could be a good idea to hire a video editor to help you, given you have such an overwhelming amount of content to craft now. It would save you a lot of time :)

I like the shorter format idea.

Circuitmike

I do prefer the longer ones, but not really by much. And that's everything being equal. If your creative process is improved or made more sustainable by doing shorter vids, I'm all for it.

i like the shorter, multiple video format idea

I can do either

NateTheOK

I like the shorter format so I'm able to comprehend everything better because I have a hard time concentrating for the longer format, I get distracted easily.

I prefer shorter formats in general. It's easier to commit to watching the whole thing. I'm not saying you should never do them. The longer formats are great when you're doing longer narratives, interviews, etc. But if you're visiting a couple of locales over the course of one day, it doesn't mean a lot to me if that's packaged as one video or three or four shorter ones. Above all, I hope you find a way of working that helps you sustain your energy for the project!

I like the short format too, 15-30 minutes.

Short format is good, 15-30mins. You could also do like a "stream" VOD of the whole thing that people could watch if they wanted to go all out for a day, separately along with the shorter videos of course.

James Hershiser

Definitely like the 15 min approach! Go for it

I somewhat prefer the longer videos, but I don't think it makes much of a difference. You should do whatever's easier\less time consuming.

The shorter formats are fine and wouldn't make a difference. Do what is best for you because getting burned out can kill a hobby real fast.

Gimmie that short burst of information so my little ape brain can reel in amazement for a day or two before you hit me again. You've made botany so accessible.

Shorter is fine but whatever is easier for you, man.

Shorter, 15 - 30 works well in my opinion.

Tristan Ursell

I've got no problem with the longer videos, probably prefer them even. But I reckon you'd get more views with the shorter ones. But ultimately you just do what is best for you.

Shorter is my vote!

The Gypsy Barber

Shorter…. Save a brain cell or three

I'll watch short and long videos, whatever you put out there for us. Always enjoy the content and a good laugh! Many thanks!

Definitely shorter format, 15 minutes sounds great! I used to create e-Learnings professionally and, though our subject matter was WAY less interesting, ≤15 minutes in length is considered a standard reasonable "ask" of adult attention span. Also want to echo the feedback that I personally tend to avoid lengthy videos, despite knowing that I'll love the content.

Sean Radcliffe

I vote for your mental health - do the shorter videos and we'll still love them.

goldenlunafish .

15 to 30 minute sounds easily digestible.

A map image intro and shorter videos sounds wonderful, especially if there's at least a little location change between videos. If that means I won't be told to go F myself at the end of absolutely every single video, I can live with that.

Stephen Meyer

Shorter format please

Gary

I really like the longer videos more because I feel like I can get more immersed into it, but putting them in a playlist would solve that problem. Really whatevers easiest for you is what you should do I think, I'm just here to see plants (and Jack)

Smaller chunks are very fun and I'm into it

I know it's a lot of extra work but if you wanted to record a video intro and maybe outro for each video that could be amusing.

Gordon Chin

I definitely prefer the longer formats. I make time for them; it feels more intentional on my part.

Short, like my attention span. Plus, I don't have time to watch an hour long anything. I'd say, 25, 30 min. max.

Dana Gibson

Ill watch whatever you put out but 15 minutes is a lot easier to consume

Ashley Dickinson

Shorter videos seems like a good call, mainly to lessen the burden of your workload, but also given the reality of often short attention spans among many of us—the unwashed masses, the goddamned Philistines—here in your digital audience.

15 minute videos would be very easy to digest and sounds like it'll be a bit easier on you

Lucas O'Neil

Even just as a viewer, I see the larger benefit of what ever is easier on you, and I’ve always enjoyed the shorter video format just as well as the long. Plus, with more releases when they go public, there’s a higher chance of one coming on people’s recommendations.

Thomas Lappin

My ADHD is partial to the shorter format as well.

Taylor Darsey

I like the smaller chunks. Maybe once in a while have a longer episode if there is something really special. Love the work keep it up!

Smaller chunks in an episodic format would be pretty great. Looking forward to seeing it.

Someone else mentioned that once you’ve uploaded a series of shorter videos, you could then put them together into a playlist for those who like the long format.

you could put them into playlists, pt 1, pt 2, pt 3, so some context carries over and you only need to narrate the new context

Fletcher

Echoing what a few people have said, I personally love the longer videos. I like being carried through the day's botanizing without interruption. But you should do what is best for your schedule & needs. I think the pre-botanizing area explanation would be illuminating and educational. I would be sad if long videos disappeared entirely, though!

I'm cool with both formats. As somebody said earlier the long-format videos are relaxing. Shorter episodes are definitely easier to fit in the day and you can do playlists to provide a way for us with more time. I tend to like the longer videos because one hour of plants makes you forget the misery more easily than 15 minute fragments, but do whatever is best for ya Joey, we're just tagging along.

Yes!!! For me, the shorter (15 min.) videos are best. I think I will view more of your content that way! Thanks; keep up the good work!

Kit Davenport

shorter for me too, but do what's best for you

The smaller chunks would be a lot easier and you could stretch out the content over multiple days

Steve Appleman

hard to commit to a one hour viewing, end up skipping ahead to bring it down to 20 mins anyways. 15 mins seems ideal.

Eric

I prefer smaller chunks.

Eva Kenieva

I'm all for the long videos, but do whats best for you

Bep

Playlists solve these issues. Pick the method which is most likely to make you want to keep doing these. (I choose shorter and more numerous.)

Short vids sound easier to follow too

Arblebee Crimdle

Whatever's easiest. If that's 15 min vids, then do that. I usually watch them in the evening so it's no different to watch several shorter vids or 1 long vid. Thanks man for your effort btw! the channel is a jewel

Otto Poiesis

When I see an hour-long video, my stubborn neurotic brain tends to want to avoid committing to it. I’d definitely prefer the 15 minute segments especially if they’re easier on you.

I personally like the longer videos because I watch while I wind down from work, but do whats best for you man, im just happy to be here 🤘

casey Taylor

I love long videos, but shorter videos might be better, especially if it's easier for you. It's also nice because when I go back to watch your videos it's easier to remember what species/rant I want to rewatch when it's in smaller videos. Plus it's better for YouTube algorithm. Loving all the south Africa stuff! It's hard to digest all of it.

Cassandra

I prefer the smaller chunks, and if it's not extra work for you or even easier for you, then that seems ideal.

brandon

I tried editing video a couple of times and it's really hard.

Gordon Chin

15 minutes seems like an ideal length.
