In the sweltering Central Texas heat of early October we examine a cast of species growing in the prairies of the Ft. Worth Region, notable for being where the Mesquite (#Prosopis glandulosa) - an extremely important tree ethnobotanically as well as ecologically - first begin to appear if headed West. We also see a few of the species that inhabit the dry limestone outcrops known for having a very thin topsoil, such as Silphium albiflorum, Hymenopappus tenuifolius, & Vernonia lindheimeri. What the hell is the difference between two closely related and similar looking DYCs (Dam Yellow Composites)? What is the 4' tall member of the Poinsettia Family that comes up alongside railroad tracks and Power line easements? This episode answers all those questions. Guest appearance by a fossil ammonite.
