Descent with Modification

Took a guest on an ascent up to see a very rare and cryptic "fern" (actually a member of the Ophioglossaceae) last night at 9,000 feet on a dormant volcano in the Cascade Range. He insisted we turn back before nightfall, and I'm glad he did, because I would've kept going, hiking 1900 feet back down through volcanic boulders and thick brush on a steep slope. Some of the youngest rock in California here, only 240 years old (since it cooled to a solid state from a liquid one). We were not able to make it to the location of this rare plant as we ran out of daylight. We ascended nearly a third of a mile straight up in only a mile and a half as the crow flies.

congrats on hitting 100k!

Makes me happy to hear. I'm glad. Getting people excited about this stuff is why I do this. Thanks all of you for the kind words.

Your channel is awesome, I've learned more about plants watching your videos then from a college course and years of trying to identify plants on my own. I picked up 'Botany in a Day' and have been studying. It really opened up a whole new way of seeing the world.

If you have ever been curious about structural morphology of plants and the occasional overtly fractal ones: check out this book : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Algorithmic_Beauty_of_Plants - now a free PDF http://algorithmicbotany.org/papers/abop/abop.pdf

Just wanted to say - listening to your recent podcast, where you mention the youtube comments getting to you - If it will keep you making the videos and reaching out / educating / sharing - then abso-fucking-lutly turn off the comments. My parents where into botany, and when I was younger, I worked with a student of E.O. Wilson (Dr. Tom Ray) to explore things like undirected evolution and social-hyper-parasitism patterns ( in software - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tierra_(computer_simulation) ) ... I had lost my connection to a lot of this, but your videos ( and postcast, etc ) have really brought it all back - and I am much less depressed as a result - THANK YOU! If you are ever out near Seattle - would be happy to schedule a meet up of like minded folks ...

The Cascades are the best range, and the Washington Cascades are the best part of the range -- therefore Washington is the best. I might be biased.

Taking a guest on a hike is a good idea but taking a guest with common sense an even better idea...!
