Jamie recently reached out to me and wanted to work on a project she has wanted to do for awhile. Of course I said yes!
This was from her original post:
"The smile that you gave me even when you felt like dying."
I've been wanting to do a concept like this for a few years now. It's open-ended and can be relatable in several ways, from emotional abuse to mental illness that rots from within. I aimed to do a shoot that captured what it would look like if I visually looked the way I felt inside my head.
Sometimes your funniest friends are also the saddest, and at times it's not from outside stresses. Other times chemical imbalance and trauma just eats at a person in ways that it can't be halted but it can be coped with.
Sometimes it's not even about being sad, just the condition of a person after enough general mental wear-and-tear. Living in survival mode, burning the candle at both ends, the token punchline of jokes, the brain being rubbed down like an eraser until it finally gets help from medication.
It's not a cry for sympathy, but a map that leads to better understanding. Being at peace though sometimes you feel like you're in pieces.
Imagine how different the world would feel if we all looked the same on the outside as we feel on the inside.
