Golden Shadows Pt. 1 - TG Caption

Part 1

No one knows who they are or where they came from. They just showed up one day, going wherever they pleased. Some people tried to stop them, tried to fight them. They were the first to be taken away. The next day, there were more. Nobody knows for sure, but we all have our theories. The strange thing is, well another strange thing, they all seem to be female. At least, that's what we assume based on the pretty obvious shape underneath all that shiny gold.

Something else that's odd, they don't really do much. Oh, they get in absolutely everywhere, businesses, homes. Apparently, they're even in the White House now. The news said the president relocated, but they just followed him, so in the end he returned. Now one of them watches him, just like the others, not that we each get our own golden shadow. Still, you always see them around, observing silently.

Like I said, eventually, most everyone stopped fighting it. You can get used to anything and they became normal. Life went on. But people didn't stop disappearing. The Shadows, stupid nickname a group so shiny, didn't even try to hide it. Sometimes, more than one of them show up. Sometimes, they pick a random person, for no apparent reason whatsoever. They go up, place their hands on said person's skin, and that's it. All fight, if any was there in the first place, drains right out of them. The 'victims' get this stupid, dopey smile, and follow their new mistresses like lost puppies. Again, no one knows why those people are chosen, or where they go. Many have tried to follow. They don't come back either.

I have personally never been close to one. For whatever reason, they've never been in my house while I was home, and I've never run into one at school.  It's not that unheard of, especially if you live far from a major population center. So the day I took a shortcut on the way home from my part-time job and ran right into one was somewhat shocking. I was moving too fast. Really, it was my fault, and so is everything that happens after, at least to some degree. I ran around the corner, and nearly smashed right into the tall golden figure. I tried to stop myself, but needn't have bothered, she did it for me. Reaching out, her hands landed on my bare shoulders, only covered by the straps of a tank top. She made contact, and all I saw was gold.

She was there and she glowed like the brightest star, the hottest flame. She was beautiful. Any care I had about getting home late, any fear I held for this monster from our wildest tales fled. She chose me! My mind swam with pure joy on a level that made me dizzy. I would…had to serve her and serve her people and, and, I barely understood my own thoughts. As the last strings tethering my higher brain functions snapped, I heard my mysterious new golden goddess whisper...

"Well, shit..."
