New Patreon fees for patrons
Added 2017-12-07 09:55:39 +0000 UTC
Hi guys,
I've got this email today (actually yesterday, but did not check my mailbox that late) about raising fees for people who support artist on Patreon
Pretty weird change, if you ask me - I mean there isn't so much people who actually want to support you with $, comparing to amount of people who just play / like my or other's artists projects. You're pretty much a miracle to me, and I was fine with creator handling the fees. I mean - if someone is willing to support you, why he / she should pay a fee for it's support?
That's weird.
If they wanted creators to earn more due to this change, I'm not sure this is going to happen. And there are better ways to make creator earning more - allow patrons to search for NSFW projects (if they check this option at their account) via Patreon, make NSFW projects legal, promoted and visible for patrons, who are interested in them...
I don't really know what else to say, and I completely understand, if some of you guys will delete / change your pledges after this change.
yeah, not accurate any more. But I don't actually like deleting old posts

I really appreciate the honesty I've seen among creators so far regarding this issue. while I am frustrated by this change I do intend to stick around with the few creators I've been supporting. ya'll are awesome and I'm not about to abandon you over less than a dollar.

I don't think it is going to be 'secretly' - patrons will probably get some calculation per month before actually paying the pledge

yup, more over if fixing means making patrons pay more

exactly! And I have no idea where did they come up with extra 0.35$ per pledge from

This is bad news, but we will manage. We are strong.

That may be so, but at a glance, it looks like a money grab to me. I've got a little over 650 patrons, of which more than 560 of them are at the $1 level. For the feels, I've always paid between about 6-11% (Compared to the 7-15% they list above) and as close as I can tell, that $.35 from that many people is going to translate into a net gain for Patreon. To me, it looks like my $1 patrons would be paying 38% ( 560 of them), My $5 patrons would be paying around 10% (108 of them), my $`10 patrons would end up paying around 7% (31 of these guys, figure that Patreon breaks even on what they would be pulling from this group), and only my four people at $20 would actually result in a negative change in "processing" fees for Patreon.
You may be right in that its something to do with legal changes, but from where I'm sitting, it looks like they're trying to pad their bottom line.
Personally, I think they should just shift to taking 10% from creators and pay the feels out of their own cut. Supporters pay what they intend to that way, creators know what they are making each month with more dependability, and Patreon can deal with the other bs on their own end. :P

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Sadly, I have deleted all of my pledges. Hopefully a better solution is found

I for one have never had a problem with paying the fees on my end as a creator. I see it as a cost of doing business. By having a cheap pledge level, you allow a large number of people to enjoy your work, and lets face it, word of mouth is a powerful thing. By raising the cost to supporters by close to 40% at the entry level, I expect that creators will make more money off of the change than they loose, but the long term damage from word of mouth has the potential to harm creators in the long run.
Guess only time will tell how things will turn out, but I sincerely hope that this change doesn't negatively affect many people. Its sad to think that this may prevent some people from enjoying all of the projects they love.

Kinda weird indeed. It's like they just want attract more projects than anything else. But, as a 1$ patreon, I'll have to cut out some patroning, and so support less projects.

So a supporter will see it as a $1 pledge, but will secretly be paying $1.38. A $10 supporter would really be paying $10.64. Hope all the creators will be honest and change their tier descriptions to show that a $1 pledge will be billed as $1.38, and so forth.

I was looking at this when it hit my inbox and thinking pretty much the same thing. I don't know that its going to make a significant impact on what we see as creators, but I don't think its fair to the people supporting us that they should have to pay extra fees just so they can support us either. I never cared for all the extra fees, but I completely understand that they are necessary, I'm used to paying them out of my cut of the earnings as a creator, and I figure they don't need to fix something that isn't broken.

Dude, that patreon decision makes no sense. This will kill the 1$ pledge. I'll stay here tho. Hopefully they see reason before the 18th.

yeah not sure i see a pressing need for this change but maybe its a legal thing

I think I need to stop pledging to some of the creators I am supporting, I do not have the extra money to give away for that. But I Will definetly still pledge here.
