BONUS EPISODE: "Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary" (w/Jael Holzman!)

Boy, we got some thoughts about yacht rock. Is yacht rock real or bullshit? Is Rick Beato real or bullshit? What other genres deserve names?? And we have a return visit from ekko astral's Jael Holzman to help us decode this fake made up genre!

Lukather at the time by his own admission was using alcohol too much, and has got sober since. I like that he has an edge but understand he's an acquired taste. But Toto is one of the all time great bands, and I wish they'd have centered the idea around the session scene, but understand that the 'yacht' aspect probably got them the funding etc.

To me HBO is going 0:2 in music documentaries compared to three-part series about equivalent topics on other streaming services. In this case it's the Paramount+ show Sometimes When We Touch on the history of soft rock (which I believe actually has a yacht in the thumbnail). It's very much in a VH1 vein, jumping to conclusions and connecting very distant points, but I think overall it's more cohesive and informative. And it doesn't suffer from the issue that the HBO docs on yacht rock and Woodstock '99 have of too many critics and personalities being interviewed who were raised with the same perceived wisdom of what's good or bad or considered bad but actually good. They lack in surprises and fresh takes

I've always dreamed of a Yacht Rock Song v. Song episode, with special guest Hollywood Steve Huey. Cept what could possibly match up against "What a Fool Believes"?

Well yes, every genre covered in Beyond Yacht Rock deserves a name.
