BONUS EPISODE: "Cowboy Bebop"

Sorry for the delay! Due to a lot of reasons -- the length of the viewing, Todd's illness, our audio editor was out of town -- this is a tiny bit late, but here it is!

I've honestly never watched Cowboy Bebop. Despite all of the praise I've heard about it over the years and how often it was on Adult Swim, I just never felt much of a desire to watch it. I've seen bits of episodes at most, but I don't think I've seen a full episode. So I can't really say if the series lives up to the hype or not, but Todd being so indifferent towards it even after Lina and Jacob were so passionate about the series was pretty hilarious. I also just enjoyed hearing these takes on the series since they were pretty interesting and made for a fun and engaging podcast.

I'm with Todd on this one, it's *so* refreshing to hear from someone else who didn't care for the show the same as me. Like he said, obviously the animation/music are top notch but the characters and stories just do nothing for me. I've watched it through multiple times over the years, listened to a lot of people talk about why it's so great in an attempt to understand it's popularity but I've never been turned around. I'm glad Todd brought up the short episode length as a problem, there's a reason episodic shows that aren't comedies or for children are usually at least 40mins; it's just really difficult to pull off a mature, compelling one-off story in just 20mins without feeling rushed. Really, I just don't particularly like episodic non-comedy shows in general, it just makes the stories feel shallow and disposable to me, it's why I've also never been able to get into fellow beloved animated classic Batman: TAS. Even the "plot"episodes don't do anything for me. The show is trying so hard to be subtle and nuanced that, in my opinion, it ends up revealing far too little about the characters for me to be particularly interested in or care about them. It's pure "Eight Deadly Words" for me: "I Don't Care What Happens To These People". I honestly enjoyed the Netflix show more. Don't get me wrong, I know it's not "good", I just enjoyed the series more as dopey schlock; the attempts at subtlety and profundity in the original just always came off as uninvolving and pretentious to me. Now, I worry that when I call the show pretentious people will just assume I'm shallow and I didn't try to engage with it on a deeper level. Trust me, I did, I do "get" the show, like I said, I've watched it several times and researched extensively what everything in the show "means". That still didn't make it a shred more enjoyable for me, sorry.

So what I'm hearing is, Todd didn't like it because it wasn't anime ENOUGH.....

Really enjoyed listening to Lena and Jacob roll around in their Bebop feels for an hour! Also enjoyed Todd's confused apathy. This doesn't put me off voting for more anime in the future at all, unfortunately for Todd.
