Animating climbing moves

Hi guys!

As we saw in the two most recent Patreon videos, I was working on the wide shot of the climber pulling on to the rock.  This shot is the first shot showing any climbing in the film. I have kept working on it and will soon go into colouring, which is one of the final passes I go trough in the animation process. Slower movements like we see in that shot are harder to animate than what you see in the second shot. The second one which is way more dynamic and obviously shorter require less precision between the keyframes and also less frames overall.

I think a good way forward from here would be to go over more shots and get them to a rough state like the second shot rather than polishing them up. But knowing myself I think that might be hard to keep up with as I tend to go with what inspires me at that moment, and if I turn it into a huge task I tend to avoid it and go onto something else. Sooo, I'm just gonna let my inspiration lead me through this film and not pre-plan the production too heavily.

For any commercial jobs I would never take this approach as it makes it  impossible to lay out a timeline for the production. But since I have no client here and its all up to me, I prefer not stressing through it.

I really enjoy animating the moves of climbing. I have been able to go outside and shoot a bit of reference lately which has been fun, and I hope to get a few more days in before more snow hits us here in the alps.  For being late November it is surprisingly warm here still.

Reference for these types of moves will be crucial as it will help to add a lot more realism and detailed movements to the character.
