I have been doing some good progress on a few shots for Obsession. This specific shot we are looking at in this breakdown worked out with very few technical difficulties. I really like when things doesn't have to be overly complicated. You can do a lot with just simple planes in a 3D space. Here I let the illustrations /animations and the paintings do most of the work.
When going for a 2D style for a film its very easy to end up with static shots or slight pans on static backgrounds. Bu...

This video contains some thoughts I had regarding animating with the Onion Skin feature that most 2D applications have. I think its a very useful tool that has a lot of value, but sometimes it might distract more and even limit the imagination for how the animation could play out.
This will apply more to someone that might not fully have control or a vision of how the motion should flow for their piece.
Hope you enjoy this episode!

Having a vision for a story and then making that come to life in a film is never that straight forward. When I started to write the script for my film I tried to imagine certain scenes that I thought would tell the story best, but over time, when some parts get developed and visualized those initial images do not always fit with what has been already created.
Transferring what I see in my head into a visual format will always result in something different from the original vision.

Was nice for a change to paint something other than rocks and grass haha! I do enjoy the nature paintings a lot, but this interior piece gave me a chance to approach things in a slightly different way. Which you can see in the video.
Hope you enjoy this compact youtube-esque Patreon video :)

New YT video will drop soon, but here you get some early bird access to it.
Probably nothing ground-breakingly new in this one, but I think people like to see the process of things and I also like making them.
Keep adding ideas for the next Patreon Challenge in the previous post if you have some good ideas! The more the merrier.

Hi Friends!
Let's kick off the conversation about a new Patreon Challenge Video. We have previously been making a 2D/3D mix for a wildfire scene and also a reimagined shot from Spirited Away.
What type of stuff would you want me to look into this time? I am open for suggestions and would love your input here, so write below what you would like to see.
You can also write your suggestions on Discord if thats easier.
Anything goes! :D

Sometimes I think less edited workflow demos can be useful to watch, so in this video I tried to keep things real time.
We have looked at projection mapping in earlier videos too, but I think its one of those things that allows my paintings to be brought into a 3D world and its a method I abuse, so I think it can be covered again.
This can definitely be done in all 3D apps so if you are using Blender, Maya, Max or C4D I am positive you will have access to Projection/Camera mapping.&n...

This is the latest shot completed for the film! I'm really happy with how this ended up looking but there was a bit of a struggle to get there. I am not the fastest of painters and it often takes me quite a while to get things to a point where I start to appreciate it.
For this piece I think I was expecting results to show earlier than they did. Getting a painting out of a muddy and messy state into something more cleaned up with defined lighting and pleasant colours is definitely a pro...

Heeey! This is the first episode covering your work instead of mine! This is a really fun way to change up the content. We currently have 7 submissions on the Discord Server (join from the ''my membership'' tab here on Patreon.). In an almost 1h video I tried to cover all of them as best as I could. I said 6 submissions in the video but I apparently cant count as it clearly covers 7 of them haha. Well well...
I realised I didn't let each of them play out fully with audio, but if you wan...

Hi! Great feedback on the last post about the video idea of me looking at some of your work and giving my thoughts and tips on it.
I thought a good way to submit your work could be through Discord. I have set it up so that all Pateron members can access the Discord Server. (I am not very experienced with discord but hopefully we can make it into a place where we can keep a conversation going easier than only here on Patreon.)
This server should also allow you guys to communicate an...

Hey! What would you guys think of a Patreon video where I feature some of your art?
I don't feel fully comfortable critiquing anyone's work as I think we all as artists do what we do for a reason, but I would be happy to give my take on things. If you want, you could submit your work together with a question you might have about a specific process or how I would animate it or whatever you think would be interesting.
This would also make this conversation a bit less one directional...

Hey! This is the last episode in the Spirited Away series! I went in quite heavy on this one and it did take quite a long time to complete haha! But its all good practice and we always learn something new by taking on some challenges.
This episode does have some quite technical bits in it, and I am not sure if that is something everyone finds useful, but I think its information that can be transferred between applications and doesn't have to be bound specifically to Cinema 4D users.&nbs...

Yoo! I wanted to share the progress we got to in the last video with all you guys. This shot has been challenging but also fun! Still some way to go, but we are getting there. The character needs colour, which is something I have started to work on and I also want to add a bunch of drawn elements into the environment.
My first thought was to add in a bunch of other characters in the scene, like the original shot from the film has. But I think that is maybe over ambitious as this s...

Hi! I'm back with the second video in the Spirited away series! I have been animating the character NoFace running down the 3D corridor we built in the last video. I still need to add colour to him which will be the final step in this series, combined with a bit of comping and finalising the background render.
To be able to move on to other things I might leave all side characters out of this shot and just have this one guy as our focus here. I like where its going so excited to s...

First episode in this challenge where I recreate a scene from a Studio Ghibli film! You guys voted for Spirited away and that's what we are looking at in this one. I will have to break this up into parts as there are so many things going into making these.
In this first one we look at making the 3D environment with all its textures and in the next we can move on to the characters.
These are heavily time consuming to make but I always think its better to create something solid than...

For the next challenge the votes were tight between Spirited away and Howls Moving Castle.
With only one vote more for Spirited Away that is the film we will take a look at recreating/reimagining a shot from.
I am tempted to work on a shot from inside the bathhouse as I often focus on exterior shots. It would be fun to make something fast moving, so perhaps the scene where No-Face is running down the corridors as a big slimy monster.
Whatever scene I chose,...

Here comes the second video about the wild fire scene! This time we look at how the 3D setup was made! Not a very complex scene but I think it blends well with the flame assets we made in the last video. I especially like mixing 2D elements with redshift environments as it helps to bake the flat 2d assets into the 3d space. It gets pushed back into space by sitting within the fog that the environment creates.
Also I am happy to get to use my 3D background characters more. For these smal...

So I will try to recreate/ reimagine a scene from a Studio Ghibli film that you choose. In my previous post we got a few suggestions, so lets now vote on what film to tackle!
Maja suggested that we focus on the animated mechanical parts of the Moving Castle in Howl's moving castle.
A2 suggested Spirited Away, so here we could explore all sorts of things.
Nick suggested Castle in the sky and especially the environment scenes after they land on Laputa.
Please vote...

Hi my friends!
Got another video coming soon on how the environment was created for the wildfire scene.
Getting your input was really fun and I would love to do another challenge.
One of you suggested that we recreate/ reimagine a scene from a Studio Ghibli film for one of these challenges, and I really like that Idea.
Now my question to you is : What film should we go for? And if you have a specific scene in mind do let me know! The more ideas the merrier!
Ill make a ...

Sooo, here comes the first video on the Wildfire scene! In this one we dive into full details about creating the flame assets I made for the Wildfire shot using After Effects.
I use a plugin called Trapcode Particular for most of this. Its a 3rd party plugin, meaning it doesn't come natively with AE. But its one of those I think is needed in almost every project, so definitely worth getting.
I have uploaded the flame assets to the drive folder that you from the Elder tier can acce...

Hey! Its been 3 crazy weeks of client work for me, so apologies for the slow update here.
The good news is that I found some time to explore the Wildfire concept that we decided on in the last poll! Here you can see the result of my exploration. Really happy with how stylized the flames turned out.
I want to make a full After Effects tutorial on how the flames were created and then also in another video explore how the full scene was put together.
Even though the envir...

Thanks for all the votes on the last post! The wildfire scene was the favoured one so that is what we will be making. Or, I have already started working on it :).
I wanted to develop a fun and fresh way to animate fire, so I have been tinkering with that in After Effects and I think I have found a method that will work. I want it to have a very painterly and textured style to it so that has been my first goal. I will try to record the first video asap for you guys.

Thanks for your great inputs in the last post about the concept for a Youtube video!
I think all were super cool but I will narrow it down to what I think I will be able to create in an interesting way.
I liked the idea of creating a scene containing a Wildfire, suggested by Carlos Valdez.
Also an idea that struck my interest were to create a scene with a surfer in a big wave. (Suggested by Katharina).
I think both of these might work really well with a mix of 2D a...

Hey my friends!
I thought we could do something a bit more interactive and involve you guys a bit in the video creation.
An Idea I had was to let you collectively come up with a concept for a quick scene that I would animate and make a video about for Youtube. I like to create short sequences that are stand alone from my other film projects, where I can really go to town and play around without any restrictions. Like the shot I did for my Clip Studio Paint video or the video whe...

Hi!
You might have caught a glimpse of the shot we are looking at in this episode in my latest public YouTube video. I'm excited about how this is looking as I am able to move my camera in a drone like fashion but still keep my 2D looking style quite intact.
This video only scratches the surface of how this shot is made, but hopefully if you have seen some of the previous videos here you will have a understanding for the workflow I am demonstrating.
I think by knowing which el...

I hope this video covers some overviews of my process. I think some scenes are better to backwards engineer in these videos rather than following along as they are being made. Often there are a lot of U-turns being done during the creation of an animated scene, so that might mean a lot of time spent on things that doesn't end up being used.
I like that I can show you the After Effects workflow in the end without having to do all the problem solving on the spot while recording. There are...

So the 3D characters that I created in the last few videos have proven useful. Here is the first shot where they are implemented into the film.
I will definitely make a video about how I converted them from a 3D look to the 2D one you see here. Its less technical and more laborious but I think it gives a nice result.
I basically have to go over each frame and trace my lines on top of the 3D render. It does end up with slightly wobbly lines for a shot with this slow movement in it,...

Hey! Here is video number 4 in the 3D character pipeline. This time we look at how we can get the character to stick to a rig and be able to animate him.
I think this might be the last episode in the series about making this character. I will definitely include my character in upcoming videos as I have some ideas of how I want to use him.
Here is a link to Mixamo if you want to check it out yourself. All you need is a Adobe account.

This is the 3rd video in the 3D character series. This one looks at setting up the reference drawing we are using to model the character. Having a clear design for your character before doing this will obviously help (in this demo I had no design reference). In this video I just demonstrate how I would go about drawing the front and side view needed for modeling.

Its been done. I could not resist it. And I am really happy I didn't.
Yesterday my new Wacom Cintiq pro 24 arrived in the mail. This thing is proper awesome. I had been using the 13 inch HD version for about 5 years now and finally decided to move up to 4K.
I have loved the 13 inch one and its been one solid piece of equipment. But one thing I always had to do was to mirror my Wacom screen to my standard 4K monitor to double check that things I painted looked alright. With this new 2...
