In Depth Drawing Tutorial - pt. 2B

Hey there Cerulean Patrons!

Here’s Part 2B of my in-depth drawing tutorial video. (Had to split it into two posts since Patreon wouldn’t upload the 11 minute version) This second part goes over gathering reference, sketching anatomy, inking, flat colors, and color pallets.

Honestly, your biggest takeaway from this part might be: “Wow, Frostbite… you use a LOT of reference.”

And honestly? Fair.

When I was a young artist, I was told— incorrectly— that using reference was “cheating,” that real skill meant drawing everything from your head. Do you know where that mindset got me? Terrible anatomy. Slowed improvement. Years of drawing without actually getting better. Reference isn’t a crutch, it’s a tool. Using it builds the visual library you rely on when you draw without it. But if you never use reference, you never build that foundation in the first place. So if anything, I hope this part encourages you not to shy away from reference but embrace it!

Had to keep a lot of my talking points fairly short here for time-sake, but hopefully it all makes sense and is helpful. If you have any questions, comment and I’ll do my best to clarify!

So what I'm hearing is I made it harder on myself to give my main oc bright teal skin 😭 just joking ofc, most of my color pallets stay in the blue/green/yellow ranges to accommodate for her ocean theme! (She's a triton who is very proud of her homeland 🥰)

Do you have any advice for how to draw and stylize noses and lips. I seem to always get stuck on noses especially.

Yes, mostly sped up for time purposes and not to bore you haha. I guess it’s hard for me to imagine the real time video would be all that helpful as most of it isn’t “step by step” but rather me making slow progress and indecisively making the same stroke 1,000 times. But I’ll look into that!

I'm new here and I just have to say I'm loving every bit of your page. By the way, you're the reason I got into The Folk of the Air, your art is simply stunning.

Thank you for this, but I was curious why its sped up (I’m assuming so it fits on Patreon) I saw someone else comment about doing it enlisted on YouTube because being able to see the steps slowed down would be super helpful compared to just getting talked through the steps. Either way I’m enjoying it and learning!
