Next Decoding Material: Peter Thiel
Added 2025-01-16 07:23:10 +0000 UTC
Next Decoding, we are diving into the depressing world of ghoulish billionaire / self-proclaimed intellectual contrarian, Peter Thiel. We are going to look at a two-part interview he did with Peter Robinson at the Hoover Institution’s Uncommon Knowledge, exploring the (supposed) intersection of "Ancient Prophecies and Modern Tech." The first part is linked above.
Join us if you dare.
Same, I like listening to him. Much more interesting than the likes of JBP or the Weinsteins. Unfortunately still some conspiracy nonsense in there.

I don’t really want to get into a discussion here but you don’t feel that it’s problematic when a rich person can shut down a media platform that they don’t like just because they hurt his feelings? I never saw Gawker but I get that it was a trashy National Enquirer type site. But the old saying “first they came for Gawker…”seems like it might apply here.

Ugh. The image of his sweaty greasy face repulses me but since it’s only audio I can stomach it.

I now have an even greater respect for Chris and Matt. Jesus Christ was this discussion tedious! I’m looking forward to hearing you guys making this interesting.

Indeed. Peter Thiel is (in)famous for discouraging potential engineers from going to college. He was so well known for it that he became the inspiration for the deeply weird "Peter Gregory" character on the first season of TV's Silicon Valley.

I made it 25 mins in before my eyes rolled so hard I thought I was going to go blind. “Greta doesn’t care enough about AI or the wuhaun lab virus”???
This idiot’s intellect never made it out of the dorm room. He sounds like a comic doing an impression of Sam Harris.

Looking forward to this. Thiel’s recent-ish appearance on Rogan was a classic. Wall to wall conspiracies.

It seems very strange to me that people talking a lot about science, like Peter Thiel, Eric Weinstein and Jordan Peterson, doesn’t seem to know or has forgotten how science and universities work. 😑

I guess Peter didn’t noticed that part in the Bible, in three different places, where it says it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter heaven. I think libertarians are the biggest liars of all. These two are disgusting.

He probably influenced Eric or they just think the same about that. Thiel wrote a book with David Sacks, The Diversity Myth, about their time at Stanford. In it, they hit on anti-western thought in the humanities, the problem with affirmative action, and other themes about the rot of elite institutions.

Only 20 mins in and seems really like Curtis Yarvin. Constantly name dropping to get across that he's well read but doesn't actually finish any arguments so its just showing off.
Also it's clear that his idea of what universities are is heavily influenced by Eric Weinstein.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the podcast yet, but this is not the first time Thiel and Robinson have met to discuss "the apocalypse". They also had a conversation in 2019 on pretty much the same subject. This New Yorker article mentions it. https://www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-silicon-valley/what-is-it-about-peter-thiel

well, that went well. I was expecting the usual dialogue between Matt and Chris, put the video on and started a game of Fortnite. After a while I realised this is just unfiltered thielism and couldn't stop the video because of the game... well, the unwanted masochism I "had" to endure was an excellent exercise in self-control!

As a sleep aid I used to listen to youtube talks at night with ambient music playing underneath - Terence McKenna, Alan Watts and the like. I'm definitely not recommending Thiel as a sleep aid, and certainly wouldn't want to risk him entering anyone's dreams, but something like this might be fitting for listening to a ghoul like him, just to make it more cinematic and hopefully a little less depressing..

Fascinating. Three things struck me:
1. The ‘heroic’ scientist trope - and, if you’re not like that, you’re like a robot. (IMO, heroism in science is overrated - indeed, a bad way of thinking about science)
2. The reference to string theory (most working physicists I know now aren’t impressed by string theory - although might be accidental I know all the string deniers…)
3. The stats flying around - eg, as much PhDs as 1900, and each PhD is 99% less productive…so confused about so many claims in that sentence…
