DTG Reflections - 2024

By our nature, we are somewhat allergic to sincere self-reflecting but since we had the rare opportunity to meet face to face and were in a rather inspiring setting, we thought what the hell!

So this is what passes for Matt and me having a serious reflection on the nature of the podcast, audience capture, motivations, and how we feel about things so far and into the future.

If nothing else, you should enjoy the snowy Japanese scenery and you can imagine the taste of the nice amber liquid we are imbibing.

We have a separate video (with one of Matt's daughters) answering the burning questions of what Japanese food we like, what convenience store stuff is good, how we met, who is taller, the joys of nude bathing culture, and so on.

Also a separate 'serious' discussion on plagiarism. So more to come. And let me take this opportunity as well to say... Cheers for being Patreon members, we do appreciate it!

Those glances freak me the fuck out

Julie

This is so cool ^^

I looked up the "normal men" clip and laughed confusedly, thank you.

Me too Eric. I’m so much more careful now about trusting smart sounding people on podcasts. I used to be so gullible, but not anymore!

Lucy

Was a half-assed joke about you inviting us to JOIN you on retreat (in Costa Rica, where all the cool consprituality peeps go). or Bali. For a mere $10,000 U.S. or Australian dollars we can listen to the two of you tell us what's what and do group forest bathing sessions! And we can have a confirmation ceremonies where we get to wear a Galaxy Brain crown. Oh pleeeez!

We live to serve.

That’s all we are aiming for!

Awkwardness is partly an artefact of recording in a ryokan lobby and trying to be unobtrusive! But no the dynamic is very similar and we already had a few evenings out so this was not the initial 'oh you look like that' moment. I would very much like to take more retreats and holidays, but a weekend is about as much as I can manage at the minute! Matt still has a few days left, the lucky sod.

I think you guys have moved the needle, maybe not for hardcore fans of the gurus, but for political moderates who are sympathetic to IDW takes. I have definitely become more skeptical of contrarianism as a result of listening to your podcast. Keep up the good work!

Very Cute. I'm a relatively new listener who appreciates what you've done with the podcast. I'm sure some of us are frustratingly aware of these figures but don't have similarly irked friends to natter with about them lol (and dissect their shady, ugly, silly, seductive qualities with this soothing specificity). <3

Two men in onsen. Golden liquid refreshes. Snowflakes drifting down.

Fast forward 5 years: Matt is doing vibrational healing with singing bowls and Chris is shilling Chris Williamson’s Lychee Libido drink and talking about the Great Replacement (of Northern Irish stars with couthie Southern Irish counterparts). You have become that which you dread… (oh, I’m awake, and it was merely a bad dream)

Gavin Boyter

Aww, you guys are just adorably awkward in the beginning! So how different does it feel sitting across from each other imbibing stuff and chatting without a target (oops, I mean subject), from what you do online and with edits? Are we gonna get real life retreats with you two (in Costa Rica please - it's the thing now :-D )? Will we be able to trace the seed moment with this artifact?

Suzan Lemont

I think the real turn in 2023 came when Brett Weinstein invited Chris to sit with him in the green room prior to his going on Bill Marr.

Note the meaningful glances at camera
