Paper for next Decoding Academia

Hi everyone,

We will record the next Decoding Academia early next week and attached is the article "Understanding and combatting misinformation across 16 countries on six continents" (Arechar et al., 2023) which was just published in Nature.

Even if you are not in the Revolutionary Genius tier or above and thus don't have access to the Decoding Academia episodes, I think it's just a good paper to read!

For those curious, we also cover the recent controversy surrounding Yoel Inbar and diveristy statements as part of the intro for the next main feed Decoding (which is Eric on UFOs with Mick West).

That's all folks!

This was my favourite Decoding Academia you've done yet - and not just because I can wave it in the face of the next Australian man who claims to be from the 'rational' sex - thanks!

Thanks, decoders, for this thought provoking paper! not sure, i got everything, but what peeped out at me from the sheer density ;-) of the information was, that "tips" rather than "prompts" seemed to work better. fits my preconceptions somehow...

Too many ghost hunters already in the world.

I like Decoding Academia at least as much as the usual decodings, I hope you keep doing it and don't chase the dragon of turning into a movie and book analysis pod-cast, that would be Very Bad.

By the way, if folks want to better understand the deepest recesses of the internet and it’s use by the alt-right to disturb democracy in the USA, a good book to check out is Meme Wars: The Untold Story of the Online Battles Upending Democracy in America by Donovan, Dreyfuss, and Friedberg. It is an easy read (except for the hateful rhetoric one must wade through).

The paper looks like it offers a promising method for reducing the sharing of misinformation on social media through prompting. Now if we could just figure out how to get more people to use analytical thinking.

🤔 Damn. That looks like homework beyond my academic capacity. I think I will just wait for the lecture, Professor 😁
