We think this one is an important episode so we've toned down our usual shenanigans. Nevertheless, there is a long intro but we thought it was relevant and necessary for the topic at hand.

2024-06-07 10:22:51 +0000 UTCUnder the leaked bioweapon hypothesis, how would the clustering of initial cases around the animal market be explained? I think even if it were granted that the WIV researchers cannot be trusted, lab leak still ends up being less likely.

2023-03-20 06:01:08 +0000 UTCAs a bioweapon, this is a rather stupid virus given its properties. Similarly, all the lines of evidence we discussed on the podcast suggest it is not from a laboratory leak and is not bioengineered.

I did my PhD research in inhaled aerosols and collaborated with research at the US Nbacc (National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center). We would always roll our eyes at the Bio-“Defense” part 🙄

I feel at least educated enough now to say I've heard real experts speak on the subject and that they believe there is strong evidence that the virus originated in nature. Well done, gents! You may have done the impossible, gotten clear information out about possibly the most obscured issue of our time. 😁

Especially in light of the infuriating Bret Weinsteins of the world who are crowing about how they’ve been right every time and now they are vindicated because the FBI is leaning towards lab leak theory They usually hate the FBI. ALL other intelligence agencies are still on the fence but one agency says it’s plausible and everyone is saying “see,we were right all along” Ugh,it drives me nuts.

But I agree he has this tendency to want to both sides everything as well and appear to have the nuanced position. While often only really engaging seriously with half the argument from objective sounding people. Chan may not make difinitve statements about the origins directly. But she certainly seems convinced there is a cover up and that experts haven’t ever expressed credulous opinions toward lab leak origins in the literature.

Sad to see some of the Twitter comments still not getting it that they aren’t saying there is zero chance it’s a lab leak and saying the same conspiracies about these individuals being paid to cover up. He’s a contrarian in style of many of other gurus but more dangerous as he gets to write in WSJ and as self- deprecating gets as pass from you. You have to analyse his behaviour towards Ukraine- it’s been deranged at times but in a ‘gee whiz just asking questions way’. Total pass from you. The rebuttal was nothing. Pretty dangerous guy . As passes smell test with you- but his tribe is Greenwald, Taibi, Gabbard, De Santis, Roger waters , Russel brand et al . Fact he can write science makes him a good guy..? Honestly. Time to review a year of his Ukrainian output.

Why other educated public intellectuals/podcasters in the IDW space refuse to engage with real experts about this topic I don’t know. I guess conspiracies are just better for ratings. Thank you Matt & Chris for a straightforward discussion that was clear enough for the layperson and us non-scientific types to understand.

He perceives more than average threat from things like wokeness, immigration, AI, people who disagree with him online, whatever. So it's not surprising to me that the threats of reckless viral experimentation, the Chinese government, and media censorship involved in the lab leak hypothesis would lead to it holding more sway with him. Haven't finished listening but thought it was great how you guys contrasted Harris's statement about leaning on experts and getting second opinions with his to-date one-sided Covid origins coverage. Possibly though he feels like he's already had experts on both sides in Ridley and Chan because they claim to have been neutral on the origins question and don't make absolute claims about which hypothesis is correct.
