*Christmas Special* with Helen Lewis on the New Gurus Series + a Gurus Christmas Quiz

There is a new challenger on the Guru analysis front.

Previous guest (and well-known journalist & writer) Helen Lewis has just released a series on the BBC on the 'New Gurus'. It is very good.

We decided to invite her back for an end-of-year chat about the series and gurus more generally.

In addition, Helen is a professional-level quiz master, so she made us an end-of-year Gurus quiz. So stick around after the discussion to see which of us is the greatest decoder... or is it the most tragic person? One of the two.

Anyway, hope you all enjoy it. Audio to follow.

Elon is still coming this week.

The Jordan Peterson comment on the supermodel reminded me once again of someone's hilarious Twitter comment, "I like big butts and I cannot cry."

This was so fun! Love Helen. The quiz was definitely the best part. You were both so adorkable :-) Interestingly one of my colleagues is married to a doctor here in Australia. And he says in the past they used to ask people with head injuries 'who is the prime minister' as one of those standard concussion questions. But then they had to remove it because they found for a while there the PM was changing so frequently even non concussed people were often confused by the question.

Which ones?

Seth Armstrong

Haha definitely seems that way. And that spinoff idea sounds hilarious.

Ikr he didn't even get "Albo"! But I got the vibe that Matt is a "facts leave head when put on the spot" kind of person, which I can relate to. Starting to think DTG should do a spinoff called "Milquetoast Centrist Politics".

A very interesting listen. On the matter you raise about a reluctance to interview neo nazis most people should refrain from this but I think this can be done effectively by a very special person. If you haven’t watched it I would urge you to watch Deeyah khan’s documentary about neo nazis where she documents conversations and time spent with them. She is such a charismatic good beautiful loving person with complete integrity who is untainted by them and stands her ground in the most intimidating and vulnerable of circumstances and the programmes are genuinely educational and instructive. She also had a conversation with Sam Harris where she suggests in a skilful way that I think persuades him to re-examine long held views and that he may be misguided that his erstwhile Islamophobia may well be as a result of him simply not knowing enough people who are Muslim (other than the media couple who make their livings by having adopted his superficial critique of the religion’s worst excesses ). I think that DK’s documentaries are much better at promoting optimism and love than Louis Theroux’s whom you mention whose comparable films it seems to me are far more about participants and audience indulging in and enjoying a freak show. DK’s other documentaries about jihadism anti abortionists and honour killing are also equally worthwhile

Great discussion guys! Always a pleasure to listen to Helen Lewis; there is so much overlap between her area of expertise and your podcast, plus I get the strong impression that she is just as much of a sensible and balanced centrist politically as you guys are. Wouldn't mind at all if she became a recurring guest on the pod. That said, I really need to check out her new guru series stuff. Only familiar with her fantastic Atlantic articles :) Oh and the quiz was hilarious! Clearly Chris spends more time online than Matt does haha 😂. BUT as a fellow Aussie, Im shocked that Matt didn’t remember Anthony Albanese’s name. Simply inexcusable 🤣.!

Helen Lewis is a great guest. You should try to get her to sit in on a Gurometer episode!

Allan Malcolm McPherson

Terrible I know.

Christopher Kavanagh

Taoiseach! (tee-shuhk) Mother of god ,Chris!

Colin Fardey

Oh my god, you guys, the quiz at the end 🤣You're like two schoolkids who haven't studied for the test and you're trying to make stuff up to pass or just create a diversion. And Helen is your teacher who is trying to keep a straight face because it's her job but who really thinks it's hilarious...

Artemis Green

“Yes we may be in a feud with the Holocaust memorial but don’t listen to the naysayers” is perhaps my favorite quote from the show of all time and the image of a Lindsay fan saying this to a normie friend is absolutely hilarious.

Andy

Listening to Helen Lewis's series now and really like it, BUT... it's missing the thing that you are providing here, that goes with all Gurus talk and that is the unstructured unedited banter. A Christmas treat indeed!

Robert Andrews

"You're catering to the normie audience" - hey! who are we then?? *checks youtube and medical history* I guess Matt has a point at least in my case...

Artemis Green

omg I love Matt and Chris's delighted giggling after Helen introduces the segment

Artemis Green

Thanks

Fixed now.
