Decoding Academia: Matt Edition *UNEDITED*

The people have asked for it.

'What about the nice one?' they said.

So here it is the unedited, unfiltered tale of Matt and his surprisingly diverse career.

The format is a bit different than the Chris' episode and we do apologise for our self-indulgence but hopefully some of you find this all helpful for trying to decode us and our nefarious motivations.

Audio version coming soon.

Thanks so much Sian. Sorry I’ve taken a while to reply. I need to check into Patreon more often and I will as my new year’s resolution. Also need to lose about 10kg….

I love all Scotch whisky. Japanese is very nice, but it’s the Islay ones like Ardbeg or Lagavullin that really do it for me

Could you hear the birds in the background?

Guruspod 2

I WAS!!!

Guruspod 2

Thank you William! I’m old, I’ve been around ;)

Was Matt looking for wunderkind?

Dam Matt, impressive and interesting stuff!

I’m partial to Kirin afternoon tea from, well, any vending machine or Lawsons, 7/11 etc. And Boss Black.

Merci!

Christopher Kavanagh

That's a slightly higher quality cold coffee than the sweet vending machine coffee in Japan. It's one of my primary vices.

Convolutions, arghh! The best I can say is I've heard the word. Unfortunately, my neural networks have become, what is the word, calcified? Anyway, not so capable of grasping new-ish concepts. Enjoyed listening to the backgrounds anyway.

Matt, love your work. You are definitely on your way to heaven! What scotch are you drinking? One of the lovely and smooth Japanese drops I hope. Chris, are you sipping Guinness out of a disposable Japanese bubble tea cup? It’s quite a convoluted method, what are the advantages?

Another awesome vid! Thanks for the insights, both of you, into the backgrounds that led to what you're doing now professionally. Matt's work on brain activity and addiction is fascinating af. I don't know if you know of a book by Michael Lewis titled "The Undoing Project," but if not I encourage you to check it out (for one thing, he is maybe the best non-fiction writer in the States right now, or maybe one of two) about the relationship, professional and personal, between Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky and their work on behavioral economics--how their individual approaches and the alchemical nature of their collaboration led to their research breakthroughs. It reads like a goddamn spy novel. All of which, like this video, goes to prove something I count as one of the most important lessons any adult can learn, which is that a real expert talking about her or his field of expertise is **inherently engaging** and worth listening to. Thanks also for reminding us that academia is still worthwhile! On ya.
