Decoding the... Foundation?!? *Audio Version*

Like the video version but with no video.

Matt and I geek out about a sci-fi series we are enjoying.

Expect fascinating insights like actors are not the same as the characters they play!

I'd love to hear a conversation about Dune. Lots of overlap in the roles of assumed and differed authority.

Haven't watched the series, but I read all the Foundation books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Once you get started you kind of have to read them all, at least for me. Chris, ask Matt if he's read any of Alastair Reynolds' books. Love that guy. Highly recommended.

Yeah I (Chris) was wrong. The cloned empires are a show invention! Very interesting details though thanks for letting me know!

I recently reread the original foundation trilogy (more books eventually followed). Even though I recently reread it, I remember nothing about the emperor being cloned. I'll have to go back and check but the emperor is really a minor character so whether or not he was cloned is a minor detail, even if true. Yes, Asimov is not a particularly good character writer / plotter. E.g. Neil Gaiman or even George RR Martin curb stomp Asimov in this arena. The novels are really about the big ideas: * psycho history * the predicted seldon crises * how psycho history goes off the rails * surprising reveals. The novels are quite short so even though they are dry, they are quick reads. They are actually amusing in many parts for predictions of the future that seem silly now. E.g. a character getting off a space ship and buying a newspaper. The "big ideas" are pretty cool especially when you put them in context of when the stories were written. @Chris : the makers of slot machines and other gambling "drugs" are today's psycho-historians. They can't say exactly who will get addicted to their slots but they know how things will play out with large enough populations. I realize now that what makes Foundation perfect for turning into a TV miniseries is (1) it is well known (2) the fact that Asimov is such bad character writer, the audience should expect heavy rewriting so there won't be much push back on "they changed the original story too much".

I used to love watching Margaret and David! The OG broadcasting odd couple

Haven’t listened yet but so glad to see this. One of my favourite sagas and enjoying the television adaptation. Hopefully it can last the proposed 8 seasons without going downhill like GOT. You geekoids better have a high opinion of it otherwise you are not of my tribe!😜
