2021-06-22 13:52:09 +0000 UTCSpeaking as Chris, I’m perpetually glad I don’t live in America and it is certainly true the culture war is largely absent from Japan but I do have ties to the UK and went to uni somewhere that would be considered ground zero for wokeness in the UK. That experience made me more sceptical of extreme progressivism but perhaps also inoculated me a bit from freaking out. I think both of us believe it is possible to chart sensible paths through the culture wars without falling into reactionary politics / online freak outs.

I commented on another post that I didn’t understand how Chris could say the media didn’t make such a huge deal about saying the lab leak was racist. The articles I read were the same ones Jesse referenced (and some more). But now I see how there may have been a disconnect. When Matt made that comment about science and activism, I was like, wow. brave. Question: do you guys think the fact you live in Australia and Japan might ground you a bit more and make you less worried? I feel stuff has really gone off the rails In the States. PS I think a lot of Jesses fans are more your type of fans and not James Lindsay fans. Progressive means something different to everyone. But that’s just a hunch.
