Cut Drag Explanation from Fly video
Added 2024-02-24 06:22:51 +0000 UTCIn the video on which pokemon should learn Fly, I cut a segment in which I explained my understanding of a common misconception in the world of aerodynamics education.
Educators, especially introductory fluid dynamics professors, will often say that you "need" the drag force in order for planes to take off. But I, like every other student always wondered WHY. I feel like I never really got a satisfactory answer.
In preparation for the Fly video, I sat down with my wonderfully brilliant Astrophysics / Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics professor from college, Professor James Cho, and we spoke for nearly 2 hours about all things flight. Included in this discussion was my question about *why* drag is "necessary" for planes to take off. The video attached to this post was my best attempt at conveying this information.
In the first draft of the video, I introduced this clip by saying:
"But WHY do you need drag to take off? I spoke with Professor James Cho to get to the bottom of this and I will now attempt to convey the information to you as quickly as I can, completely improvisationally. If you know what a tensor is, this next part is for you. If you don't, I'll put subway surfer and minecraft parkour on screen for you."
As you can see, the clip is 4 minutes long, requires a high level of physics to understand, and just could not be cut down to be interesting. I toyed with the idea of just including a sped up version and uploading this somewhere unlisted, but I decided against it in favor of keeping the video more cohesive. Anyway, here it is! Tons of stuff in this clip is only half correct or is missing a lot of context. Regardless, enjoy lmao.
