Let's talk about money
Added 2025-01-25 19:58:06 +0000 UTCThanks to the amazing support that I’ve received from everyone on Patreon, I have been a full-time YouTuber for over six years. It’s astonishing and I’m so grateful to have the stability your support provides - I have not worried about money since I quit my “real job” and that’s definitely not a thing most people can say.
But I’ve never talked about money. I’ve brought you along for the bigger changes that have happened with this channel like the new studio - hopefully that has given you some sense of how your support makes my work possible. But the truth of the matter is I have more than enough money. This is why I haven’t pushed the Patreon page in years and it’s why I’ve not created a line of merch or courted sponsorships. I know I have enough.
So it’s time to announce a new policy. I’ve gone through my housing, business, transportation, energy, and general life expenses (like health insurance, what fun). After adding those up, making room for my regular retirement investments and a monthly stipend for food and whatnot, your support on Patreon currently represents a monthly surplus of approximately $4,500. I will be donating those surplus funds to social services organizations in my local area which provide housing, food, job training, and legal counseling to those in need. Shortly I will be setting up recurring donations totaling that amount and I will provide receipts for you. I will also be re-evaluating income and expenses on a quarterly basis and adjusting amounts as needed.
With the revenue shared from YouTube, this feels like the right thing to do. Unless things turn sour extremely quickly, I still have quite a rainy day fund. To myself, I’ve been rationalizing my “fun” purchases as coming from that chunk of the business and now I’ll make that explicit: your support here covers my expenses and the surplus beyond that will benefit my community.
I have been donating to two local organizations that I trust (in no small part because I volunteered for them in the past) since 2020 and they will both see an increase in support. Those are the People's Resource Center in Wheaton and the Elmhurst-Yorkfield Food Pantry. I would like to support more organizations, though - so please feel free to make suggestions for Chicago-area orgs you trust. I would like to keep my impact local but would also like to help those living in the City proper.
Thank you so much for being here. It means more than it has ever meant.
-Alec

Just seeing this a bit later down the road and will not be stopping my (small) donation, but wanted to sort of echo what I've heard from many others out here. There are 3 or 4 creators that I've ever given money, and you're one of them. I believe that the donations you're making are to legitimate organizations that aren't lining some fat cat's pockets, and if that's what you want to do with the "paycheck" we help give you, that's your prerogative. Personally, I'd either rather see that money going to something techno-literacy related or contribute to the future of your channel in some way. Whether that be hiring someone to help you produce content, or to procure something totally outrageous and bizarre that would only make sense for YOU to do... which is probably a pretty large category. Again, I donate to you because I trust your judgement, but unless you've already done all the "saving for the future" and your kids' and your kids' kids' college funds are completely paid for, don't feel guilty about keeping the money that comes your way.

2025-07-26 21:32:20 +0000 UTCThis! This is the first time I ever paid for something on YouTube that I liked, only to find out it is going to a good cause. A good cause absolutly, but that is not why I gave money. I gave money for cool stuff, or maybe a tempraturemeter, cuz it really bugged me with the boiling water test, that it wasn't really precies. Just cool stuff. I have enough good causes where I live to support

2025-04-02 08:18:26 +0000 UTCWhat? No! We give money to you, because we believe you will be able to use that money for good purposes! You giving it away to charity is likely to result in some CEO paying himself a larger bonus. I want to see you invest that money into something you believe in, like heat pump research! Don't make throwaway merch, use that money to find a heat pump you can stand behind and be blown away by it. Then use that money to order a container full of them, slap your brand on them and sell them to people like us who support the idea of 21st century technology. Even if this requires a loan, let the money pay for the interest. Help humanity by introducing it to something better, don't just waste the money on supporting humans who failed to human. If I we wanted to give our money to charity - we would have. We want to see YOUR personality have a bigger impact on the world. Not some CEO's.

2025-02-01 23:53:15 +0000 UTCYou are just the good human being I thought your were. I think you are with like-minded people here, but otherwise this way of thinking and behaving needs to be pushed if we ever are going to have the solidarity with each other that we had some decades ago. I totally agree and appreciate what you are doing. I also love your content and, especially, the way you convey it. All the best for your future!

2025-01-26 21:35:20 +0000 UTCI seriously appreciate your responsible approach to this weird career and your generosity in a world where many no longer believe in sharing; what's mine is mine and what's yours should be mine. But be careful. You are lucky to have people that truly like what you a big part of that is that they look though their various screens and decide that they like and trust you personally. This line of work may not last forever, though, so be prepared for that future. Some content creators will take their extra money and expand their channel to employ an entourage, buy a mansion, and take extravagant trips, all as tax-deductible expenses as they get content from them. Again, it's all *their* money as the definition of the word "economy" has been lost to some vague portion of the population. Then, with a budget that might start a Moon program, they continue expanding their revenue streams and pretend that it will all grow forever. You are taking a different route and one that might be obsolete in today's majority worldview. That's meant as a compliment, by the way ;). I'm in a very different place and am paying utility bills with credit cards; nothing exists more than 12 hours into the future. I'm more than smart enough to know better, but I'm in survival mode. Yet, I'm continuing my support of your channel because it's worth it and because I so identify with its inquisitive desire to learn about everything, even things others find mundane. When I stumbled upon this channel, it was so very "me" and I knew that within moments of starting the video about portable air-conditioners; I had tried explaining those concepts to people and largely been ignored. I'm so glad that this weird youtube/patreon thing has worked for you. Have a great day.

2025-01-26 19:52:45 +0000 UTCMaybe a good 'investment' could be to also help other video platforms to make sure there are other options if youtube becomes a problem (e.g. algoritm and/or account bans or whatever).

2025-01-26 17:33:46 +0000 UTCThis is so cool. Like everyone else, I appreciate the "I have enough" attitude, but I also really appreciate how you're making your own definition of success. I like that you won't be pushed to do things you don't want to do just because it might seem like the next thing. "I have enough" applies to more than just the money, I think.

2025-01-26 13:54:22 +0000 UTCThis is so cool Alec and count me among the people happy to see my support not only supporting a content creator I enjoy but making a positive impact in another community. 2025-01-26 11:51:39 +0000 UTCI can see why people are not entirely comfortable with this decision. I believe, however, that very few of them would actually set a recurring payment to a local charity in the name of efficiency. You unite people and I commend your choice to donate such a big portion of your income. I will continue my support. I encourage everyone to do the same, as well as set aside a couple dollars each month for direct charitable donations.

2025-01-26 09:27:43 +0000 UTCIt’s things like this that make it obvious I made a good choice in supporting your work, it’s not only doing good by providing information and entertainment but that kind of large donation can really save lives. This is really the kind of pure positivity I needed today so thank you for this and everything else you’ve done for all us fans.

2025-01-26 08:15:01 +0000 UTCCongratulations that you're doing so well with the earnings from a YouTube channel, I don't hear that from everybody I'm a Patreon of unfortunately... I hope it will continue! And I hope you don't lose too much on people that don't like the charities you're donating to, I think it's a great idea (and you have my full support on that :-D), but I could imagine others not like it though.

2025-01-26 07:34:04 +0000 UTCI kinda wish there was an organisation there that would focus on improving energy effiency of housing thru educating (what you do too) and supporting those who's income falls short to impletement changes. That would really feel like expanding the work you have done. Reducing energy usage one heatpump at a time.

2025-01-26 04:47:38 +0000 UTCIf I took those actions the channel (and my work) wouldn't be what I want it to be. I have something of a motto: don't look for reasons to be unhappy. It's honestly as simple as that.
Technology Connections
2025-01-26 04:38:04 +0000 UTCIf there is a surplus of money, would a more sensible expenditure not have been something like employing someone to assist in script writing. Indeed one of your big problems was research wasn't it? I'm sure there are potential production assistants who could do some leg work currently studying in college's or universities? Use the money to help create (better) what the channel is doing, seems sensible? Even an assistant during shooting like a camera operator would fit into improving production wouldn't it?
Colin Grimshaw
2025-01-26 04:31:07 +0000 UTCThat's more or less the reason for this transparency! I'm at a point where I feel I cannot in good conscience ask for any more money - I'm happy with where I am in life and chasing more simply goes against my being. So I would be increasing the monthly donations I had already been making, and even planned to make that jump. But before I did, I figured I would announce this publicly. It would honestly feel like lying if I didn't. And now that you have this information, you are free to do with it as you wish. Though, and admitting this is a very selfish argument to make, I would say it's possible to imagine your pledge as being split with the large majority going to TC and the rest to causes I support.
Technology Connections
2025-01-26 03:41:58 +0000 UTCI also came to the comments thinking that this annoucement might cause some patrons to reallocate, depending on their reasons for giving. > if that changes how you would like to allocate your money on Patreon - that's part of the rationale for the transparency. I didn't want to be the first to bring it up explicitly, but great to hear that this was an intentional choice!
LK
2025-01-26 03:36:03 +0000 UTCI’m gonna go against the grain and just say I feel this was a bad thing to announce. It takes away the basic incentive to join a patreon. A dollar from me to you is just a charitable donation except it’s less efficient bc patreon take their cut. I can literally better use that money myself. Gonna have to think about this. God knows I’m not one of your large donors but at any level of support it just seems needlessly reduced by transaction fees. Having said that I respect your impulse to cap your income.

2025-01-26 03:03:01 +0000 UTCYou just earned even more of my respect. Not just the donations, but your volunteer service. I'm glad the channel is doing well for you and that any surplus is doing good in the community. You've got heart. And it settles the fact that you've got local roots. A long time ago, a coworker who lives in the west burbs recognized one of your locations. I'm especially happy to support YouTubers who are both incredibly interesting and in the Chicago area. I live in an inner-ring Chicago suburb and have friends out in Lombard and Wheaton.

2025-01-26 00:52:58 +0000 UTCYou're setting a great example in transparency and doing a good thing. I'm intentionally not calling it doing the "right" thing, because honestly I think you've earned the money you're getting here. I think it would be perfectly moral as well if you spend it on luxury items, travel, or whatever makes you happy. But that being said, I think what you're doing with the donations is fantastic. 👏

2025-01-26 00:43:29 +0000 UTCI make pretty good money myself. I like to joke I make my "atheist tithe" every year by giving away my income for December. But I also have enough stashed away I know if I never worked again I could *survive*. That said, I'm guessing I'm 30, 35 years older than you and expect not working anymore to happen soon ish. I'm just saying, this could all go away any time. You could get to a point where you could give away everything pretty quickly and not take a risk.
Robert Cooper
2025-01-26 00:41:59 +0000 UTCHe didn't need to tell anyone what he would do with the money you've decided to give him, but he did. Now you get to make your own decision. You should thank him for that transparency instead of criticising it.

Technology Connections
2025-01-26 00:31:35 +0000 UTCI appreciate this, but my transparency here is about the money you send me. YouTube sends me a significant amount as well, and I've been investing that quite heavily. Plus, I have a lot of evergreen videos which actually do provide a lot of "residuals" Besides - I don't really believe in sitting on money and letting it grow in the hopes it can help people later. I'd rather help people now. And the accountability angle isn't so much me expecting anyone to remind me to do this. It's simply that I've told many people I intend to do this. That may not feel like a significant difference but I assure you it is.
Technology Connections
2025-01-26 00:27:53 +0000 UTCSo, real talk on this: 1. Making the declaration and posting receipts doesn't mean we, as your para social friends, are really gonna hold you accountable for this. Let's be honest, this "we" don't have that kind of attention span and don't really care that much. 2. You don't know what the future holds, and I wouldn't be quite this direct with this. Consider buying an SPY index fund with the money, and just donate the change in value every year. You are fortunate and you should give back, but you are also young, and take it from me, one badly broken femur can alter the course of your life. At least invest the money and donate the proceeds and sit on the principal. If you leave it behind, you can make that decision, too. 3. While I love your content and am not looking to withdraw my money, you are in a fickle industry with no residuals. Consider doing this kind of think when you have enough banked that you don't need the money anymore, not because you think the income stream is good.
Robert Cooper
2025-01-26 00:23:37 +0000 UTCI very much feel like I’m “getting my money’s worth” out of my subscription. So as long as you and Technology Connections remains in the black, I applaud this. Although, tshirts with your face on them would be cool though. Or maybe an ugly Xmas sweater with LED lights in them. *ducks*

2025-01-26 00:19:54 +0000 UTCSome odd comments! But I give value for value. What you spend your profits on is up to you! Keep in mind people if you pay for anything the person you give it could spend it any way from charity to hookers and blow!

2025-01-26 00:18:38 +0000 UTCI so appreciate this mindset, especially in this point of time where so many people (and probably more in the coming months) need to rely on places like food banks for support. I wish more people that are well off would see that they don't actually need more and invest that surplus into their communities, instead of pursuing infinite growth for growth's sakes.

2025-01-26 00:08:14 +0000 UTCI think homelessness services for LGBTQ youth are probably going to see additional use and need in the coming years. We're not from the Chicago area, so I hope I'm not out of line suggesting this, but my husband and I try to support programs like this around us. It looks like there's at least one in the Chicago area, part of a larger org that also provides services to low-income LGBTQ folks, and which has a good Charity Navigator rating: https://howardbrown.org/service/broadway-youth-center/

2025-01-26 00:07:15 +0000 UTCIt's your decision to make. 2025-01-26 00:01:06 +0000 UTCI love all your delightful weird deep dives into stuff I never knew interested me! Yes, I’m now a heat pump convert 😎 This money talk is so refreshing. The last Victorian stronghold is money…"don’t tell people what you make or ask them how much money they make." Onto your charitable contributions…I donate to various charities throughout the country that help folks keep their pets when faced with veterinary bills. So many loved pets are surrendered because of this. I live in the Reno, NV area but there is one in Chicago I contribute to: Chicago Veterinary Medical Foundation: "Cherished pets in need of urgent medical care are sadly relinquished or euthanized every year because of their family’s inability to pay for their care due to financial hardship. The Chicago Veterinary Medical Foundation’s mission is to change the fates of those precious pets. Established in 2009, we are a 501(c)3 charity that works with Chicagoland veterinarians to provide financial assistance to pet families in need to help with the costs of their pet’s urgent, unexpected medical and surgical bills. Their work plays a vital role in strengthening the human-animal bond by helping sick and suffering pets get well again.”

They've gone down a very similar path to you and have done a ton of work in the global public health space with their reach and resources. Their approach isn't local as you're intending but there could be some great guidance in terms of either collaborating and potentially multiplying the effect or otherwise improving the impact of your generosity.

2025-01-25 22:38:02 +0000 UTCHey Alec, fantastic news! We don't want you to feel pressured or rushed, every video you make is a gift! Now to the important bit: I don't know any Chicago charities by name, though I would like you to donate to one that teaches people about very important things in life, like the latent heat of vaporization or the refrigeration cycle. If you find any like that, I would like my dollar to go there 😉

2025-01-25 22:26:02 +0000 UTCMore people like you in this world would be a good thing. "I'm doing just fine, won't hurt me a bit to help buoy those around me" is an attitude that is shrinking aggressively.

2025-01-25 22:21:36 +0000 UTCAnd do not care about "ney-sayers" regarding this noble attitude to surplus money. Those are yours anyways and when one give, one will be given when in need too. Communities needs to be powered by good will and stuff... :-)

2025-01-25 22:17:37 +0000 UTCI have always been enamoured of endowments - many worthy organizations have difficulty in maintaining consistent support and them setting up endowments can aid in that sort of thing. Community Foundations are often the vehicle that allows a small organization to create and administer that type of investment. It looks like Chicago has a large Community Foundation - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_Community_Trust perhaps they might have existing funds that support the things you are interested in. Creating a donor-advised-fund for things you think are important is one possibility, but giving to an existing fund can help boost that fund's impact. Here are some: https://www.cct.org/philanthropy/funds-and-giving-vehicles/foi-funds/

2025-01-25 22:12:40 +0000 UTCI came to say basically the same thing. While I think it's noble and very conscientious, it's not why I chip in either. Not saying you should splurge, but maybe build up a safety net or consider hiring someone else to help you with producing. Don't burn yourself out either. And... enjoy your life!

2025-01-25 22:09:32 +0000 UTCThank you for sharing your opinion, though I will say - this is something that I wanted to do and I would have done it regardless. I want you to know about this policy of mine and if that changes how you would like to allocate your money on Patreon - that's part of the rationale for the transparency.
Technology Connections
2025-01-25 22:09:20 +0000 UTCI have a different opinion about this than most of the commenters here. If people wanted to donate to charity, they would themselves, with a more efficient way than having you in the middle which adds some tax overheads and other things I don't understand. I don't support you so that you give that money to some random charity I don't even care about. I would rather give the money to a charity somewhere in *my* local area than in *your* area. I support you for your content, and for the type of content you create. In my opinion, the better way to spend this excess money would be to donate them to smaller creators similar to you, or just smaller creators that have the potential to become great. With that, people who support you would still support the kind of content and things you do, not some random food or housing charity on the other side of the world.

2025-01-25 22:04:41 +0000 UTCWhat, no Lambo? A few years of saving up that money could afford you (a small) one... My hat is off to you for instead recognizing what really matters. Thanks a lot!

2025-01-25 22:03:46 +0000 UTCI'm glad the donations are going in part to support a food bank. I've never personally had to deal with food insecurity, but I can well imagine how frightening it must be to not know where your next meal is coming from. Especially if you have kids. Good job!

2025-01-25 22:02:48 +0000 UTCPeople asking about merch. I have a band, there's a local mom and pop print shop in our town. We send people there if they want band shirts. They sell sports memorabilia and print our shirts on demand. We don't make a dime but it's also not our hassle.

2025-01-25 21:47:05 +0000 UTCThanks Alec for opening up to us like this. I appreciate you describe yourself as a Youtuber, not "an influencer". You clearly do have a lot of influence, but through education and information. Are you a one person show, or are their editors and assistants working in the background? Have you considered taking on an apprentice or offering work experience opportunities or sponsorship to a young person in your area? Sometimes a small break is all it takes to change somebody's life for the better. I'd say you have skills and wisdom to share that can do as much good as the money.

2025-01-25 21:25:38 +0000 UTCIt's funny you posted this just now. Not five minutes ago, I was lamenting the old days when I would find Saturday videos from you, Techmoan and Disaster breakdown. It was how I used to like to spend my Saturday mornings, and now only Techmoan remains regularly. You and Disaster breakdown have both changed your MO to bigger, grander and less regular videos, which of course is your prerogative. I just miss it. I'm glad you have enough money now. 2025-01-25 21:09:34 +0000 UTCMate! The selflessness is beautiful but I would agree with some of the sentiments in the comments that you’ve earned every cent by providing value to the community already, extra value by funnelling the reward for that value into charity is not required. Though it is very kind. Can I suggest an alternative path. The community has put you in trust of these funds. Perhaps you should use them to expand the scope of your channel/ business goals and create more value to society through a vision of your own. I’m not sure what this would look like. Perhaps funding animations, or hiring an editor to relieve workload. Funding another channel with a team that could execute your ideas. I’m not sure. The content is obviously already incredible and needs no extra. And how we spend money is a deeply personal choice. And is your choice completely at the end of the day. But I am on your patreon to give you money to fuel *your* vision for a better society. Whatever that is. Thankyou again for your content. Your friend- Hoocho

2025-01-25 21:05:03 +0000 UTCRarely does one hear or read "I have enough" so kudos for that. As others have noted, take care to build a large buffer for future self. 2025-01-25 20:34:50 +0000 UTCAlec, I appreciate the example you represent as a creator. I will say that, in my life, I have to advocate for The Children's Hospital of any location in the US. They saved my life several times as a child to teen. They do genuinely amazing work for families in desperate circumstances. I can't necessarily weigh it against every other good charity in the world, but I donate to my local one. Best of luck to you and your community. 2025-01-25 20:29:50 +0000 UTCAs for Chicago area charities, I can say this: I once attended Hyles-Anderson College in Crown Point, Indiana. They're based from First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana; and, that church is one that runs buses to Chicago every Sunday, bringing people to church. Even if you're not Baptist, maybe you can support the good they're doing in Chicago, teaching Christian morals and ethics through Biblical outreach. They always have need for bus maintenance, diesel, and occasionally replacement buses. If you want a recommendation for somewhere to donate, that's my recommendation.

2025-01-25 20:24:29 +0000 UTCFrom one Alec to another: It's so very refreshing to see progressive conduct from a creator, especially in a day and age when others are going out of their way to exploit and capitalize (or protect, or diminish fault/responsibility), let alone those that keep their gains private. 2025-01-25 20:02:32 +0000 UTCIncredibly generous of you, though unless you actively have enough money to retire *now*, I'd encourage you to set aside more for your future before giving back. You can always ramp up your charity later and online businesses are fickle.
