Sometimes we need to work with what we have but I always think "as long as there's a bit of light we can manage". This time was on the line. This editorial was pushed to later in the evening in that hotel room in New York and we literally had 0 light available except the few bulbs you find on any random room, definitely not enough to shoot. 

I put the phone flashlight on and pointed it to a white wall to get some light and pushed the ISO of my camera as never before. In my viewfind...

Behind the scenes video working with her on that beach. As always quick and effective, 3min for the results you can see on the previous post or attached image. Not gonna lie... we were expecting strong sun and no wind and we had the complete opposite... anyways she made it work.

Ok, not gonna lie... this location is fantastic. Don't mind the 38 degrees when we shot because Amber is one of those models that can push through anything... heat, scratches, wind and difficult access to rock formations. 

The power of music. BTS video marking the pace for a model

This short video is self explanatory. Some models (most models) move really fast. And when you ask them to flow instead of changing poses some adapt and some have a hard time... this is why choosing the right music is not only effective to create the mood but also naturally marks the pace and rhythm for them to move at the speed you expect.

Imagine the same scene (natural light from a window, just a bedsheet) with fast-paced music... even with the same setup results would be completel...

I don't mind working when it's cold... much better than really warm weather, but this was maybe pushing it a bit too much. Chicago, in January, easy -5 degrees. By the time we started our initial location was cosed, so ended up parking the car at the truck docks of an industrial area and rolled with it.

Wet hair, cold wind, few looks from the stylist and a model that not only doesn't complain but can work attitude and power in any condition.

We shot together again last friday. We met at a friend's place with not much sun and just a small bag of clothes, but took the chance to catch up and start planning the next one. 

For photographers or enthusiasts out there... 60min shooting time, 13h editing (color + bw versions) and sending the material to her agency today.

I am super happy to share this BTS video. Because she is absolutely gorgeous when she moves, because it was my last set before leaving Barcelona but above all, because again I can show how easy it is to work with someone if you set the right energy and mood for it. Really, the way she moves, so slow but so into it... you can't but adore Caro.

3 min with Carolina before I left.

I met amazing Carolina last day before I left Barcelona for the next adventure in Bali. As always we meet for 2h but end up shooting for only 30min because we don't seem to be able to stop talking. This was the last set, the studio manager already gave us the "you have to pack and leave" and she put on a blazer for the last pics. Really simple, just a goodbye, behind the scenes video from this set coming up soon, just finishing a little edit so you can see us work together.

Today is time to share some of the work done with her in Barcelona. The water portraits were taken on a different day, with the help or an assistant throwing the water from a plastic bottle... the rest all comes from the day we met, shot in 1h as a test for her agency portfolio.

I always mention that i work fast and i guess sometimes is not really clear what that means. on this video (1min52s) you can see how we get ready inside the house, go to the terrace, shoot under the rain, get the pics ready and back. when you have things clear in your mind and the model knows exactly what is expected, is literally a matter of seconds before you can move on to the next set.

Unpublished full editorial in Amsterdam

I flew to Amsterdam to shoot an editorial and had one afternoon off before getting ready for it. I decided to work with Lotte that i had on my list of models "pending" and we organized super quick. She is adorable. We planned for sunny outdoor garden mood and as soon as she arrived to the house, rain started. Typical Netherlands, sunny, yes, but rain on and off not giving us a chance to get any set ready before we had to go inside.

Here is the longest BTS posted so far. This is how we shot the editorial attached.. you can see model, make up artist and me working this set together. Audio is a mix of spanish, catalan and english, but in a nutshell it can be summarized as : i was trying to explain the model that the concept of the editorial was the "broken doll" look... that's why we try to capture lost eyes, uncomfortable leg position, covering softly, not aggressive body work...

As always, keeping it intense and not stopping,... making the 2.5min experience totally successful without getting the model tired or falling into boredom. You can see exactly what we did, how we did it and what came from it.

Desert editorial with Melanie

We shot this editorial for a Magazine (printed edition) in a patch of desert we found in north germany. I added some images that didnt make it to the final set... 

working with her, you can all imagine, is just a gift. Face, body language, how well she connects with the camera and the story making every image a memorable shot. We had around 12 degrees temperature, a little bit less than 30min before sundown, only used natural light (as always, i never have assistants and never plac...

The concept (i normally work only with body work and straight forward moods) was sent to me by the make up artist that participated on the editorial. Her idea (no references, just a little talk) was to play with the idea of a broken doll. She had make up and hair piece in mind and i  had to somehow get that body languag...

Here you can see once more how easy it can be when you set the right mood. 2min shooting under the strong light of california noon, no rush, no stopping... the creative flow that comes from moving in sync and knowing what we look for. 

Ally in California

again a set shot in the middle of the day, pure sunlight, this time in El Matador Beach, just a short drive out of Los Angeles. Going to this location is really a hit or miss. You either find the place totally empty and can work wonderfully... or you find from wedding photographers to movie productions to Netflix series teams taking over the space. Park, 15min walk down to the sea front... and get your space in the rocks to work a bit. Defined body, strong face, water and light.
