Going a bit retro TC today - a "quick" video on the stereo sound of vinyl records

UPDATE: Video was re-uploaded to give on-screen thanks to your fellow patron Paul (who provided footage of the record cutting process). Any comments you left on the old version are going to go poof in about an hour. Also, captions are live!

Hello there! Knowing who you all are, there's a pretty good chance you already know this. Especially if you've been following TC since the earliest of early days! But I've been meaning to make a video specifically about this for a long time, and decided to do it now to provide a break between the two home electrification videos.

Speaking of which, in a very rare-for-me series of events, Home Electrification Part 2 is already in post-production! In fact I shot that first, but decided to push it back. I fully expect that to be out before the end of March.

Rough captions should be in-place already, but I need to polish them up, add cards, and all that fun junk. Hope you enjoy!

Lovely video! Really reminds me of the kind of videos that got me hooked on the channel all those years ago.

I love the old 70s experiments with "quadraphonic" sound. I mean, it should sound twice as good, right? It's the equivalent 4-channel Surround Sound today (which is neglected in favor of 5-channel). It would be good to have an episode of why it didn't work, and was such a commercial failure.

Great explanation. For years I found discussions about LumenCache always turned into a deep dive into one or more rabbit holes. While builders and architects may only care about the benefits, your audience may love the many reasons behind the technology connections. Happy to dive into those holes: https://igg.me/at/lumencache/x/666746#/

I also saw another "connection" in this video. The way they took a mono signal and made it stereo using a stereo difference track in order to maintain backward compatibility seems very similar to taking a monochrome television signal and adding a "colorburst" to maintain backward compatible with existing black and white TV sets. And both happened within the same decade!

I second this! Talk about a great No-Effort-November video, the script is mostly written!

I absolutely CANNOT believe you used Andreas Vollenweider's White Winds as the CD in this video- I think you've used it before too? Not only does that album evoke strong memories from my childhood, I was just listening to it 2 days ago. Love it!

Do the full series again! 🤣 It was honestly some great work, even if the channel was a baby.
