And I'll also write some things.
That's the new version of the Starlink antenna. Here at HQ I have a flat roof, which has finally come in a bit of handy. I have to secure the wire at some point but I'm putting this firmly in "good enough" as far as how it's installed. I very much doubt it will move, and it's been through a lot of wind and a snowstorm already. Also, it's pointing Northward, and seems to always do so, so I'll be moving it around a bit to try and optimize obstructions. The app has a very handy tool for helping you see that.
And then there's the car. I have a shot of the tail lights because, immensely annoyingly, Hyundai did that thing where they said "in NA you can have all-red lights in the rear! And you can combine the turn signal and brake light! So let's do that!" I'm very bothered by that, but what can you do but make a video about it a few years ago and still have nobody listen to you.
Also, its lack of a rear wiper is in fact problematic around these parts. Salt spray gets on the glass and using the rear defroster helps but a rear wiper really should be there. Hopefully it's only a problem in the winter months and their aero treatment works for rain.
OK toodles
I have the Ioniq Hybrid and it has the same "no rear wiper" issues as the Ioniq 5 it seems.

I drive a Tesla Model S in the UK. The dash animation shows a blinking, all-red brake light on the rear, despite the car having orange indicator (turn) signals all around.
Whenever I notice, I think of "the" video! 😂
A friend has the Ioniq 5 here and it, too, has orange indicators on the rear.

I have the old Starlink dish. I am curious if you have connectivity issues during heavy rain, because I sure do. Not sure whether it’s due to attenuation of signal through rain, or the physical impact of the raindrops on the dish causing it to lose track of the satellite.

My guess based on the profile is that there is a significant savings in drag to not add a wiper arm. Some water jets would be welcome in those cases though.

Seems a bit daft that there's a problem when you can fit yellow and red LEDs in the same place and have it flash red and yellow (ok amber) alternately and if any legislatures object just turn one of them off. I always preferred trafficators anyway, but that's just my being awkward.

I wonder what it would take to mount an Aus-spec taillight set into a US-spec Ioniq. Thirty years ago it would probably have been pretty simple, but these days, who knows....

Have you asked the dealership you bought it from if they can enable the amber turn signals? Some North American cars (as stupid as this sounds) have exactly the same light assemblies as the rest of the world, it's just a software change to enable the amber lights. As designing and getting compliance/approval and then manufacturing two separate light assemblies is stupid.

Best to find a high spot to mount the "dish" for sure. I've found that the Starlink dish will attempt to adjust over the course of days/weeks. Mine was initially pointed way more north than it is now, directly into the top of a tree that I have no way to move. Was hit or miss for several days. Eventually all of a sudden it was like "No obstructions" and I went and looked and it was physically a bit more flat vs a huge northern angle. Still north, and aimed a few degrees west, but not like it was... and enough to clear the tree.
I also found that the service was more reliable after I put the _exact_ coordinates of where I mounted it in on the website (and I've found Google Earth's satellite pics to be off by about 10', for reference). Like, I moved it 30 feet from where I marked it previously, and it worked fine, but it worked better after I set it properly. No idea why this would matter, but I changed it back to the old spot to make sure I wasn't crazy and the service was in fact degraded.
I also have the round dish, so, dunno if this matters or not.

I'm still driving an increasingly-rare first-gen Mazda6 hatchback here in similar snow country, and I don't know how I'd live without the rear wiper. The Mazda6 hatchback was a bit of a sleeper, since it looks almost identical to the sedan (which they sold for quite a bit longer). The only way to tell them apart at a distance is the presence of a rear wiper. Why the hatchback, with almost exactly the same rear window slope as the sedan, got the rear wiper and the sedan didn't is beyond me, but I'm certainly happy about it. Very nice choice on the Ioniq 5, though. It's definitely been on my short list of cars to consider.

Ah yes the infernal US centric light combo special you have videoed about. The same EV here in Aus and all other cars have "proper" turn signals. We're getting a lot of cars with the directional bar type LEDs that chase in turn direction. For hazard lights all come on together

I'm 100% in agreement. So much of the infrastructure is RIGHT THERE, but it's hard to get people to tap into it because that costs money. If there were a lot of fast chargers near you, you could maybe make it work, but it's nowhere near as nice as access to slow charging at home. At the very least, building codes need to be updated to mandate sufficient EVSE installs in new builds, but I would absolutely support an electrification mandate for landlords.

Lack of a rear wiper is a huge oversight in an otherwise amazing car. The aero treatment hasn't worked here doesn't seem like Rain-X makes a difference either. Some folks are using the rear facing camera in a pinch it seems.

Yea, wipers are far more effective than modeled or even wind-tunnel tested airflow in clean, non-Winter conditions ;). I've driven hatchbacks all my life and can't stand it when I drive a car with no rear wiper, even if it's a sedan.
I understand why sedans don't have them, but I constantly reach for one anyway as I actually like to *see* out the rear window. Ridiculous, I know.

I just want you to know something:
I, too, have always felt the same way about the rear lighting. I have always preferred having amber turn signals, but I've always kept it to myself (you know the whole, "you make mountains out of mole hills" thing people say). Well your video helped to validate what I felt was always right.
So when my new Tacoma came not only with red turn signals, but red turn signals that DON'T EVEN DOUBLE AS BRAKE LIGHTS (whyyyyy??) I went out of my way to find, purchase, and install a custom wiring harness that addressed this by making the red, turn signal lens part of the braking lights and uses an amber/white switchback LED in the clear reverse lens for the rear turn signals.
So thank you Alec, for making me feel validated enough to chase what really mattered.

I've wondered if there was a change in regulation since the Lucid Air, made in California with the US market in mind surprisingly has thin amber turn signals strips and it looks glorious, but oh well.
I'm confused why the Ioniq 5 with a hatchback style doesn't even offer a rear wiper as option, but I remember they mentioning the airflow around the area would account for that, apparently it didn't work lol.

When you made that video about red turn signals, I was like, "YES! THANK YOU! Why do they do that? It's so annoying!" My dreams were shattered recently when I realized that the car I was considering getting, a Lincoln MKZ, has no amber lights in the back. 😡 The Ioniq looks very 80's retro, almost tacky, but kinda cool.

I'm just glad they're so different. People seem to prefer one over the other, and I actually like the interior of the EV6 better. But I really don't care for the exterior. Meanwhile other folks find it really futuristic, so they've done a great job making two very different vehicles on the same platform.
For me, ride comfort matters more than interior styling, and since I like the exterior of the Hyundai so much more than the Kia, and the Kia is supposedly much more of a firm ride, it was hands-down the Hyundai. I actually signed all the papers before I ever set eyes on the car, that's how sure I was I wanted it!

It is, but did you know it's hand-wash only? That's suuuuuuper fun.
OK, so they tell me it's hand-wash only and that it shouldn't go through a tunnel-style car wash, but the little pamphlet also says pressure-washing is fine. So what I've decided is that touch-free car washes are OK, so long as you don't get a program with a wax-like product. I did not know this before I bought the car so... we're learning together! I figure if I ruin the finish after a couple of years I might bite the bullet and have it re-painted (or maybe wrapped). My first-choice was actually white.

The pickin's are slim with EVs that I want, and reviews suggested the Ioniq is comfort-first in a way no other EVs have been so far. Everyone seems to be going for "sporty" which means rough and bouncy suspensions, and the Ioniq has (thankfully!) gone the other way. If there were more options I might have considered it a deal-breaker, but as things are now I begrudgingly went with it. Even the VW ID.4 has all-red rears here in the states! It's incredibly annoying!

Given which of the pixels are "frosted" and which are clear, I am pretty sure they're entirely different modules. If I could track Euro-spec modules down it might be interesting to see if they work, but the wiring harnesses could be different or maybe it would need some re-programming. I've actually thought about doing this, and I'll see what parts availability is like, but I think it's probably more trouble than it's worth. While they are combined, they're big and bright, and the third brake light is also quite large, too. So it could definitely be worse.

I love the design of the Ioniq 5, with all its 80's touches. Good choice 👍
Would it be possible to reprogramme/rebuild the lights to EU-spec? Or would that be too complicated with warranty and the likes?
2022-02-21 19:43:10 +0000 UTC
Me, too. I'm so disappointed that Hyundai did it here. Their international versions of the car have the bottom row of pixels light up amber, but the NA versions are altered *just for us*
I have been told our lighting regulations require the lights to be at least a certain physical size ant not just brightness, so it could be the rest-of-the-world spec wouldn't meet our regs. That's the most charitable explanation, but I'm not sure it's correct.

2022-02-21 19:35:24 +0000 UTC
Well, depending on the design of the car it may truly not need one. My first car was a Civic and it didn't have a rear wiper, yet so long as you were moving at any reasonable speed nothing would land on the glass thanks to the airflow around the car. And once you moved it would clear off quickly from a stop.
That was an actual car with a trunk, though, so the glass wasn't exposed to salt spray. This, being a hatchback/crossover has the glass at the very back, so it's not so lucky. They designed scoops into the spoiler which are *supposed* to make the same sort of airflow trick work, but it's not cutting it for salt. We'll see how it does in the warmer months.

2022-02-21 19:18:04 +0000 UTC
It is bigger than you would expect from its proportions but it's not *that* big. It's about the size of a CR-V or RAV4, but not as tall. My folks had a '15 Equinox and it's a similar size, but I think the interior space is a tad bit longer. Certainly seems that way with the seats folded
