Analog Hygrometers

You know how I have this yearly tradition called No Effort November that inevitably becomes a misnomer? Well today I have a actual low-effort video!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCUHDFYdG44

See, here's what happened. I had just started another simpler video idea that, of course, became more convoluted rapidly. And I wanted to get something out before the end of April. Having bought the clock I bought for the last video, and remembering that some people were curious about these things when I made the humidifier video, this was thrown together in record time.

Set your expectations accordingly, and my apologies to all of the non-US folks for the tangent but your compatriots have a knack at getting to me...

I'm really torn about the Twitter thing - I hate dad jokes and puns, but I love snark. WHAT TO DO???

Circuitmike

What's the (infrared) frequency, Kelvin?

Stephen Gillie

No u! :p

Stephen Gillie

First Officer: "Captain, we're near the Human Internet!" Captain: "Set expectations to snark and sass."

Stephen Gillie

It's like 2 buildings, where building A was built on a hill that's as high as the 32nd floor of building B. And building A has high ceilings, so there are only 5 floors to every 9 floors in building B. Now, what floor do you need to be on, in building A, to be directly across from the 59th floor of building B? And they share basement tunnels! The tunnel connecting the 40th subfloor of building A with the 40th subfloor of buidling B is especially popular.

Stephen Gillie

Hi!!! Just came to complain regarding the temperature measurement, i demand you to you Kelvin??? :)

Mauricio Mariano

I myself find it far less random to say 0 is where water freezes and 100 is when it boils to 0 is a very cold day at that location and 100 is when it was very hot there.

Martin Schröder

Nice video, no need to set expectations low. Its good to have some lighter topics in between more involved videos.

I agree with you, but I love the fact that negative numbers means freezing

Here's how I do it (German person living in the US): 30s: Freezing 40s: Oh god 50s: Too cold 60s: Cold 70s: Okay 80s: Warm and nice 90s: Pretty hot to be honest 100: Oh god 110: Stop! I don't even really think about what that means in Celsius anymore. And as I said elsewhere, unlike other SI-units, Celsius is very arbitrary and not that useful (it's not Kelvin), so I'm totally fine with Fahrenheit.

Julien Oster

As a metric-proponent who grew up in metric-land (and moved to the US), I still regularly rant how Celsius does not count as SI, it's just as arbitrary as Fahrenheit. And if we pick arbitrary scales, we might as well pick the one that allows us to say fun things like "it's going to be in the 70s today" instead of "between 21 and 26 degrees". I'm a staunch metric supporter, but a Fahrenheit convert.

Julien Oster

I actually loved the simplicity of this video. Your snark shines through no matter the production quality.

Nate D

I'm fine with you using Fahrenheit, but you're missing a few letters in analogue!

Having often converted air temperatures in my head over the years, I learned a few tricks. I know a few keys values: 0°F is about -18°C, 32°F=0°C and 68°F=20°C. Each step of 9°F is 5°C and each 1°F increment is about 0.5°C. So for a temperature of let's say 53F, the nearest step of 9 is 32°F+9+9=50°F (0°C+5+5=10°C). To get 53°F requires 3 steps of 0.5°C above 10°C, which gives 11.5C. The actual calculation is about 11.7C.

There's always the task of determining whether a year is a leap year.

Michael Dunn

Expectations set to snark and sass. I was not disappointed :)

Jason Wellband

-40 F and -40 C are the same!

Rocco Rizzo

LOL Let me show you how to google. lol.

John Dye

Most of these use two alkaline metal contacts and generate a voltage when a sufficient amount of moist electrolyte is put in between them. Sounds like another quick video idea

Ryan Helinski

No music? I heard the Imperial March playing in my head when you talked about Fahrenheit 😜. And then basically: Fahrenheit is the only imperial unit to make sense anyway, in the sense that it is as "random" as the Celsius scale... But yeah, both are more convenient for us than Kelvin anyway. As a child, I used conifer cones as hygrometers, works also quite well 😉.

MrHammond

It was absolutely unnecessary! That's part of the joke.

Technology Connections

Oh, good!

Technology Connections

The long tangent about Fahrenheit was a bit unnecessary since the thermometer wasn't the main focus, but you know how people get angry with stuff that most of the world doesn't understand (myself included).

Guy Mendes

"Thirty is steamy, Twenty is Nice, Ten - put a sweater on, Zero is Ice." And then you can just think of Fahrenheit as "% of hotness". #GeneralizingTemperatureScales

Every time you said "simple" it reminded me of this song https://youtu.be/2bjk26RwjyU (English subtitles for those who don't speak French)

Eduardo Balsa

If America ever converts to the Metric system, what would beginner programmers do without the classic task of scripting a converter from C-to-F ?!

Your gleefully snarky defense of the Fahrenheit scale brings me great joy.

Jennifer Holz

I wonder if the analog soil hygrometers work the same way. They specifically advise against direct contact with water, too.

Eh, I think much of the rest of the world can somewhat rightfully feel united in being not-American

Technology Connections

Non US =/= Compatriots ;)
