CED part ... the end?

It's done! Mostly!

https://youtu.be/ASuo4DM6MT0

No really, I've wrapped up the story here. I may make a follow-up depending on feedback (as explained at the end)

I'm honestly quite happy this is over. Parts 3, 4, and 5 are so much more of a story than they are my typical content, and I've been constantly nervous about how it would be received. It's gone pretty well overall, and I might consider doing something like this again, but for at least a while I'd like to focus more on the technical aspects of whatever I'm discussing.

However, there were a few things in this video I'm quite pleased with. A few happy coincidences happened in the editing and I also had a little fun here and there.

I hope you enjoy the final chapter!

My copy of the book just arrived! It's still sold as new in some online shops, fortunately :) I loved your series on this, and can't wait to learn more!

Feels like the end of an era. XD Brilliant series, well done! Now just to hope the feedback will convince you to do the follow-up. After your well deserved respite of course. ;)

Thanks for the series! What a lot of info and a lot of work. I enjoyed the insight into RCA history. Well done!

I totally agree with Brad's 2nd paragraph - this has been a fantastic series and I really appreciated the detailed backstory, which was essential to understand the fermat's many delays & why it failed so massively. I hope to see more longer, storytelling styled videos soon!

Great video, as always. Was the glitch at 16:03 on purpose?

Given the emergence of video for hire, I wonder how the CED would have performed as a hire format? Not well I'm guessing. Tape was more or less ok as a hire format in my experience. How many viewings can a CED disk handle before contamination and wear set in?

Just a small thing: If you show a lot of text and referring only to a specific portion of it, like at 3:39, consider highlighting the text in question. It makes it much easier to follow.

It took a lot of screen time to get there, but that was my take away.

You know Eastern Air Lines is back in business? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnn.com/travel/amp/eastern-airlines-returns/index.html

Y'know, I'm starting to enjoy your end bloopers more and more, given all the fluffs I make on a regular basis. Mine aren't as fun to watch though. It's mostly swearing...

And a sixth, not written by him, which I've never dared trying!

Brad Jones

Douglas Adams said he would only make 3 books in the Hitchhiker's, then made 4, then 5. I remember on book 5 he wrote "The fifth book in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhikers Trilogy". Classic!

I don't want to be repetitive or crude, but I'm in my mid 70s, and lived through all this, it was 80% XXX, and 20% "But we can take tv of the kids" The first camera (I still have) was shoulder held, and my favorite Dealer, Rental Store, called and said "I have two coming in, Kodak wants both, to Take Apart, if you get here first, I'll sell one to you, and tell Kodak, one was lost in shipment. Got out the check book, and we were into live video. Took it to Disney, and say a guy with one with no wire going to his wife.... and he could hold it with one hand....Bummer !

Well, now what?

I have fond memories of my RCA SJT-400 and we had a pretty solid collection. I eventually went on to LaserDisc, but for many years CED was how I watched pre-recorded movies. I also imported some JVC CED anime titles from Japan (like "Outlanders").

I really loved the story aspect of this series, and hope some future series have that too! The way all there companies were racing to compete with each other to make the next big TV innovation kinda reminded me of how the Los Alamos scientists raced to complete the atomic bomb. Even though it's just TV it's super interesting how these huge companies lived and died by getting to the next innovation first and how the internal politics influenced all these things.

Hanging off the back of the set are two cheap TVs, so they are indeed screens but it's 2 huge ones spanning six cubbies rather than 12 individual screens. I need to spend some time on making more imagery for them, as I've been repeating a lot, but all it is is a template that I will put whatever images I want on and from there I just display it on the screen while I shoot the video. I'm very pleased with how it ended up looking - I can't remember exactly how I came up with this idea but I'm glad I did!

Now you just need to edit all the parts together and make a serious documentary on the entire subject for people to buy...just not on a CED. LOVE THIS STUFF! :-)

Arthur Robillard

I love the special background images that match the content of the video. How do you do that? Are they screens, or just backlit plates that you can swap out?

Fantastic! This is a mandatory story for every “too smart for their breeches” engineer fresh out of college. Be like Indianapolis and DELIVER 😎

Joshua Marner

Hey, please make a Ge Miser Maxi light lamp video ❤️

Matheus Bitencourt

Don't change what you do ... I'm always happy to see a video on your channel.

Robert McCullough

I am seriously wondering when scaled to timelines, which has taken a longer percentage of time. Your work on the CED video series, or RCAs work on the CED itself. This is a fantastic series and the most comprehensive view into this nearly-innovative format!

Brad Sparks

I just spent 20+ minutes watching a video of a blue lava lamp explain CED's failure.

Yaay.. My saturday is saved then... Having the option to watch your newest episode or read the boring textbook on managing for my upcomming work study Hmm what to choose... (PS i allready hate the book)
