Let's Build the Set Together! (and learn a bit about it!)

This turned out to be far more explanatory than I first I imagined. For the video where I go through everything in the set, what it is, where I found it, etc., I plan on putting that up publicly on TC2 so it will still happen.

However, I was able to film pretty much the entire reconstruction. I'm back home and found all of the missing things, so when I'm next there, I'll be able to put everything back in order!

I'd always assumed that the TVs were mounted on the wall behind the set, and I was impressed that you'd got them aligned so perfectly. In hindsight you way is so much easier.

I LOVE behind the scenes stuff like this. And I really appreciate the attention to detail you put into the reconstruction. When I first saw the first video at HQ, I didn't notice the difference.

I have those same HDMI cables for temporary connections (presentations, etc.) at work! ALSO, obviously your chains work and I wonder what crazy solution I would have had to do the same thing because that's not what I would have thought of. I am about to move my main TV to a place where I can't wall mount it, and a safety-chain to the wall behind it using that same idea is now officially in the plans. Like a few people in these comments I am a new Patron after I realized I watched every single video on both of your channels. Great job!

As a newly subscribed patron, I've been watching your HQ videos all morning. This one was, by far, my favorite. With every episode I admire your set more and more, and it's really cool to see how you put it together. You've clearly got an eye for design too because you took a bunch of old "crap" and made it look amazingly decorative. Thanks for sharing! Also, congrats on HQ in general! Having your own dedicated space is amazing, and homeownership is/can be a very rewarding experience too!

This is great! One idea for the TV's... you mentioned Chromecast being a pain and you're just going to put up still images. Most TV's have a USB port on the back for plugging a USB key that you can store photos on and then have the photo display on the TV through a media menu on the remote. So you could get a USB extension cable (something like this <a href="https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Extension-Cable-Male-Female/dp/B00NH11PEY/)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Extension-Cable-Male-Female/dp/B00NH11PEY/)</a> and plug one into each TV, and have the cable come out on the left side of your shelf where you have that space for your desk. Then just get 2 cheap USB keys, put your 3840 x 2160 grid graphics on the two USBs, and plug them into the extension USB so you have easy access. You could then have multiple variations of the jpg's on the usb keys and easily swap through them with the TV remote ;)

He said he was gonna do it later, because he's kinda trying to pull off a big surprise to the non-Patreon viewers when he reveals that he moved the entire set 100 miles without anyone even realizing. It sounded like he'll wait to do a few videos and then drop in a dramatic zoom out and say "how do you like my new HQ? I've been filming here since March!" And then after the cat's out of the bag he can make the door adjustment.

Daniel Pritchard

I literally laughed out loud when the music started. Good work bro;)

Did you forget to exchange the black and white doors so your head is not partially framed in white?

Mike Bird

Impressive set, made all the more so by seeing all these details. I, too, never noticed the TV's but they make things even better. It all reminds me of The Birds, the Bees and the Monkees album cover.

Arthur Robillard

You know, if you can afford some real wire and Reutlingers, you will be able to hang and adjust your TVs much more precisely. We use them all the time in the rental business, hanging projection screens, TVs, LED-walls and whatnot. :) <a href="https://www.thomann.de/gb/reutlinger.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.thomann.de/gb/reutlinger.html</a>

Are the Lava Lites intentionally on the switched circuit? Mine need an hour to warm up before entertaining; that might mean you need to remember to turn things on an hour before you want to record.

Which song is playing behind the first timelapse?

Thanks for sharing the build with us, Alec! -Alec

You really should mount the big shelf to the wall. These Ikea shelves are not really stable otherwise. Not convinced? Look at this: <a href="https://www.vinyle-actu.fr/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ikea-expedit-s-effondre.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.vinyle-actu.fr/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ikea-expedit-s-effondre.jpg</a> - Yes, I know that one wasn't assembled correctly but as you said you have a lot of heavy stuff in there.

Robert

Hi Alec: Vince C. here. Congrats! You made a tough job look easy. Wish I could "speed up" my own home projects like that thanks to time lapse photography. Ah yes, if it could only be so. Appreciate your taking the time and interest to take us along as you get your new set at your new Headquarters set-up. Eagerly awaiting the next "installment" for sure. Thanks again for the ride. Be well. VGC

I've never seen a really decent autofocus... I was waiting for you to go all AvE on it... "Focus, you *#%@! "

Brad Wilmot

Suggestion: use turnbuckles for hanging the TVs, so you can make small adjustments easily.

Wolf

They're not supposed to be noticeable... if you never noticed that there were TVs back there, then mission accomplished! The idea of them is that they create color and more contrast in the background. I had toyed with making them more interactive (and their first appearance as function was in my traffic light video where they actually emulate a display of traffic lights) but I decided that this wasn't worth the effort. The still images are just the right amount of color, and allow me to change it up with each video. Trust me, the set looks a lot duller when they're not on. Just a black background makes for a very dark and cold appearance.

Technology Connections

You are spending way too much time talking about/worrying about the TVs that flesh out the edges of the set. I love the videos but I never EVER noticed TVs in the background. I saw them only on still pix I've seen on Patreon. Take a breath and fuck the tv's.

Howie Walters

I hope this sin't the last HQ update, they're a lot of fun. Would love to see the process of you rigging up the lighting you've previously mentioned.

Ben Thrussell

It’s looking great! You could perhaps go with the “big lie” approach, and just announce, dead pan, on the first video on the new set that you decided to change to a new table in celebration of $something, so that’s why the set changed. And see if anyone else outside your patreons notices anything else different... :-) Ewen

Ewen McNeill

Definitely suggest some raspberry pi3s for the displays. I used them for a 6 projector sync'd Halloween show this past Halloween (check out my youtube). they wont do 4K, but they're pretty good otherwise, especially if you're just throwing stills back there. Cheaper than a laptop by far, remotely controllable, etc.
