A Headquarters Update

This might be news to some of you--and if this is your first "Patreon update" video experience, be prepared for a lot of rambliness. I'm generally bad at this sort of thing. It may be best enjoyed as an audio experience. There is one interesting thing shown relating to a furnace though. Flames and all.

But! I don't think I formally announced this here, and I'm excited to tell you that I'm done with school! I've graduated and have put that mess behind me. I've spent the last 10 or so days doing a bit of relaxing (my brother and his SO were in for a visit and it was nice to spend time with them and the rest of my family, too). After that rest period, I'm back on the YouTube trail.

This video is the most recent update to HQ, and things are going swimmingly! I explain why progress seemed halted for a while--but it's all good now. I hope to have the space ready by February and to be filming there by then. We'll see! Either way, it's much further along now and is basically three steps away.

Thanks for your amazing support as always! I hope you had a very happy new year's celebration (whatever that may be), and I'm very much looking forward to what 2019 will bring!

what is your degree in?

you cant use a water softener with an aerobic septic system unless you use the INSANELY expensive potassium chloride pellets (not the regular sodium chloride salt). regular salt will KILL all the good bacteria in the septic system when the brine flushes.

Pleased to hear the news about your Dad and glad to see it all coming together. Thanks for the update and Happy New Year!

Thanks for the update. Nice to see things are progressing even though it is not going perfect - it never does. Hospitality management. I did not guess that one, but you can make a BnB in the rooms you are not going to use :-)

I suppose I could have done that, but using two runs of 12/2 means that down the road capacity can be doubled if need be. Another possibility is to "swap" which half is on which supply--so that all the greys are on one, and all the whites are on another. I personally don't like having one box with two separate circuits in it so I don't think I'll do that, but it would be easy to convert to that setup down the road if it becomes necessary.

Umm why didn't you use three-wire cable if one leg is switched, one is always on and common neutral? Would have been a bit cheaper too..

James Holmes

they might charge a bit more but it's probably not a deal breaker to have the outlets in place

Your drywall contractor is probably going to want the outlets removed. They use a rotozip to cut the openings in the drywall for the outlet boxes. They punch it thru the center of the box and then go to one edge to find the edge then punch in again just outside the edge and go all the way around to cut out the opening. if the outlets are in the way they will either be damaged or it'll take them longer to make the openings.

Ooh, good idea! My dad thought of putting in a solid-core door for the closet, so he may already have this in mind, but I'll be sure to bring it up. We have a lot of left over insulation from the garage that he doesn't want to use on the exterior walls for fear of moisture so perhaps this will be the perfect application for that scrap!

Technology Connections

You talked about adding insulation in the walls, but think about adding it to the closet walls also. This will add to the dampening of the radon fan. I have insulation in the ceiling of my home office and it really REALLY helps keep the noise away from the kids in the family room directly above.

What's the story behind that mandarin shirt? Good to hear that your dad is fine!

I've only just joined as a Patreon, and I'm already glad that I did! It's been great to see your channel progress so much, and even greater to see that there are so many new things in store. It's going to be an awesome year :) and congrats on finishing school!

Mark

Thanks! I'm a stickler for their alignment. And yeah--I saw the sticker (during shooting actually) and had planned on doing something about it, but then I looked them up and their service area is *huge*. So it doesn't reveal much :)

Technology Connections

Good job on those outlets. I almost never can get them straight in the box, especially with 12AWG wire. It's exciting to see you getting a dedicated studio space. BTW the town of the previous HVAC service company is shown on the furnace door.

I agree on cleaning needed. Especially since it’s 8 years old now, and from earlier videos probably sat unused for 7 of those years, so dirt, etc, will have accumulated rather than being regularly burnt off. Ewen

That’s really good progress, especially considering everything else that has been going on. Thanks for the update. Happy New Year! Ewen

Keep it up, Looks great! Look after your folks and take the time you need.

Definitely dirty burner. Failure to propagate across the manifold is indicative of dirty jets between rails. I'd wager the thing needs a good cleaning of the burner assembly and HX and it'll be fine.

Brad Wilmot

Good to know about not doing double-wires. Honestly I found forming the loop to be quite easy. I'll see how things go once the drywall is up, but I sincerely found it hassle-free. If it becomes clear that I'm setting myself up for future nonsense I'll switch to the WAGOs, but in any case I've left plenty of excess should I decide to go that route :)

Technology Connections

Using the WAGO's is recommended in the boxes. You're not allowed to have more than one wire on a terminal. While your current looping method is not illegal, it is frowned upon, as it makes replacing the device much more difficult for the next guy.

Brad Wilmot

Congratulations on getting your degree!

Mike Mason

Everything looks great. Great luck moving things forward. I'm anxious to see more "check-ins" showing how it's going. I'm happy to be a supporter.

Robert McCullough

It is great seeing the progress.
