UNCONTAINED EXCITEMENT (a thank you!)

Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow. (and flutter!)

So I couldn't just not do anything after having reached the biggest goal I had set! Thank you to everyone who has helped get this channel to where it is! This video is more thanks as well as some musing about the future. It's very laid back, and just me talking to you, but really...

Thank you!

Here's to the future!

(and maybe I'll update the goal--but right now, the possibilities are opening up and I'm focused on those)

UNCONTAINED EXCITEMENT (a thank you!)

Great news! And good luck on future spaces. The Modern Rogues just put out a few videos on a farm they'd purchased in Texas for their studio/outdoor filming space. Have you thought of old industrial / retail locations? IMHO, avoid building ground up at this next step and go for pre-existing building/property. And again, best of luck.

CJ Carpenter

But that would be really really cool!

I would love to see some car computer (ECM) videos. The thing that I find crazy about them is that they are often inside the cabin of the car. And the work then the car has been sitting in sub-zero weather for days, and they work when it's 220 degrees inside the car. They work when the battery is almost dead, and they work when there is over voltage. Same with car radios. Just crazy!

James Sutherland

Have you considered a storage unit as studio space? LGR did a video about his space and why he does that. He was burnt out from his home space being his work space too.

Jay

Thanks for the appreciation, but know that we appreciate as much as you appreciate us. That's why we've put up money to see more of you. Be proud of yourself for your success, which is all your own doing.

Örn Arnarson

I am amazed that this channel has grown so much and that you have reached your goal of 3k, Alec! I distinctly remember subscribing to your channel back when there where 935 subscribers, and you have since come a very long way! Keep it up, and I'd love to see a bunch of teaspoons of gas on fire.

Wrenly Bewick

You’re killing it dude. Super excited for the next video and for your future studio plans! How feasible would it be to rent just a studio apartment and move your stuff over there?

Exact same two Patreon pledges by me, and for the very same reasons Mr. Bell stated.

Roger Beal

shoot, i missed it. what's the timecode for the shoutout? (34:12 to answer my own question)

nobody

Thank LGR for me being here, personally! He mentioned you when you appeared on Twitter, I think? I'm sure I'll hear the Techmoan mention too since I also follow him. :) Anyway, I really enjoy what you do, and appreciate the explainers. I've learned a lot from your videos. Thanks!

evistre

You just got endorsed by Techmoan - that's when you KNOW you are big time!

Bill Basch

You just got mentioned on Techmoan... :)

I was about to mention the great Time Hunkin. Alec's stuff also reminds me of "The Acme school of stuff" by David Stringer. https://www.youtube.com/user/acmeschool

Wim

I'd be willing to put into the crowdsource barn deposit fund!

Congratulations, Alec. I am so pleased to see Patreon working well for you. You and Mat from Techmoan are my two pledges and it's great to see people doing such good work that the watching community feels it worthwhile to voluntarily donate to keep high quality content coming.

Stephen Bell

congrats mate, well earned/deserved

So they burn more fuel in an attempt to reduce emissions, Oh the irony,

I like the sound of a Solar Barn.

"Humbling" not the right word? Maybe "validating"? Like, you think your content is valuable, and it's validating to see that so many others think so too.

Matt Whitlock

Well deserved, congrats :)

RE: Showing the power in gasoline. May I suggest taking a page from Tim Hunkin and his excellent "The secret life of Machines" and using a similar experiment to show the power of gasoline? https://youtu.be/gfr3_AwuO9Y?t=2m31s. Your channel reminds me of this series. I used to watch it as a kid and you have a similar way of breaking down how things work and explaining it. Of course, in your own style.

s3v

Alec, congratulations on your milestone!! I really love your channel. I am over the moon if you wanted to do a series on engine management computers. A buddy of mine and I reverse engineered some engine management for Chrysler and it’s truly fascinating. Please contact me if you need help with your research. I’m a big car Guy and so is my buddy.

s3v

Why not take Technology Connection on the road, and do videos abroad, as here in Australia we are heading into summer :)

Paul Fisher

Congrats and keep up the good work (and the puns too!!)

Jason Wellband

As an audience member, I appreciate the thanks, but dood, you earned it. Your videos are fun to watch and watching a video about that stuff really beats wading through pages of dry text to get that kind of info.

Ketafuki

I found you via your first EV related video, and I literally binge watched your other videos that day. You make awesome content, you deserve this success, and I’m happy that you have other dedicated fans that seems to agree.

As I'm seeing it, currently you're getting approx. Pi*1000 per month. Neat! Edit: Wait, no. I'm an idiot.

Tedd

Congratulations! You absolutely deserve the success you're achieving. I know how easily one can reach a point where they feel like they don't deserve it, especially as the level of success gets higher. [I'm not suggesting that you should lean into your success and become an egomaniac, obviously.] I'd love to see you be able to take on bigger topics like testing vehicle myths and misinformation. Your style seems very suited to that. To me, you come across like that smart friend I hang out with every now and again, rather than a blowhard with an opinion. That ability to be concise and definitive without being preachy or judgemental is a rare thing, especially on YouTube. I hope you eventually reach a level where you can build your dream solar video barn! [A video series on the building process, like the one on getting an EV charger in your condo garage, would be amazing to watch.]

Kevin Kostka

Here is my $.02.... Never feel like you have to respond to all your fans. Dan Bell often says that if he took the time to answer everyone that sent him a message, he wouldn't have any time to make content. The more you open up channels of communication, the more people will take advantage of it. I know I'm personally guilty of this myself with you, and you were extremely nice and patient with me. Sorry about that. As long as you're nice, sincere, and humble in your videos, that should suffice. Make the occasional Patreon only vids, and don't worry about having to get back to everyone. Also - I'm pretty sure Clint/LGR rents out a self-storage space and films some of his videos at that location. Maybe explore that option?

Jason McMillon

99% given up. I'm technically still on as "pool" status, so I'll work maybe once or twice a month. I'm doing that both because I like to be helpful (and I like my boss and workplace) plus there is the very nice benefit of still being eligible for travel discounts.

Technology Connections

I don't mean to imply they don't reduce emissions full stop. But they make the emissions seem more "innocent". One thing cat cons don't do is lower carbon emissions. And like has been studied ad nasuem (which I don't mean to sound combative here), even with a carbon-fed grid, EVs are cleaner because a giant stationary power plant is wildly more efficient than a small internal combustion engine. It's not ideal, of course, but it's the only way to transition to a fossil-free future. Hydrogen might get us there as well, but there is tremendous wasted energy in hydrolysis and fuel cell conversion compared to storage in an electrochemical battery. Plus, scrubbing equipment on a stationary plant can be much more effective than a bunch of small cat cons. Plus there are idiots that like to delete them from their cars for performance, and if you're in a state that doesn't do emissions test there's no repercussions for that action. (dangit and this press enter to post!)

Technology Connections

the ECU and catalytic converter are not just masking the emissions, they really are reducing them! - such as the new ULEV and SULEV vehicles - I am a runner, and it has been a huge difference, I used to be sick after a run from all of the bad emissions!, but lately that has changed! - or heck, just look at the Los Angeles skyline, the "brown cloud" is fast disappearing - sure, wind and solar etc. would be ideal, but not everyone has the financial resources for that yet. Also, keep in mind, just because your electric Chevy Bolt doesn't pollute directly, how about that coal or oil fired electricity plant that is providing the charge when you plug it in?

Bill Basch

Congrats, Alec! Glad you've hit your goal and proud to be a part of it!

Sam Blakey

have you given up the hotel job yet?

Bill Basch

So happy for you and for your channel! You deserve this support! It makes me happy to see that there are so many people who are actually interested in learning and developing their knowledge. Your channel serves to restore some of my faith in humanity. Keep it up! I've been here from the *cough*humble beginnings of your channel and will stick around and help out however I can! We appreciate you as much as you appreciate us!

Yes yes yes! A car tech video from you would be awesome!!
