Patreon Exclusive: Channel Updates/Vlog/Rambles And More!

Hello!

So I figured I'd release a video for you explaining the state of the channel and what's going to be happening in the near future. Due to making the channel my No. 1 priority, I've fallen a bit behind in school work. I've also been working on making channel improvements, and in general I've just not done this in a good order that makes a lick of sense.

Anyway, that's all explained in this very rambly vlog-style video. If you enjoy that sort of thing, I think you'll like it. If not, know that the biggest announcement in here is that I'll be going full-time YouTube within a month or two.

Thanks as always for your continued support!

I agree with Craig, the level of detail you put into your videos, you can do the history of practically anything and I'd be interested. I love your channel! How about more videos on the history of computers????

I like the level of detail you go into on all your videos and I'm sure I'll enjoy any future topic you cover. Keep up the great work and congratulations. Oh and enjoy that cold weather. It's nice and warm here in South Australia!

Hmm, that's a good idea! My Volt is a gen1, so it doesn't have the paddles. I could drive it in L mode, but I don't because it doesn't illuminate the taillights unlike the Bolt EV and the Gen 2 Volt. However, the Bolt does have that paddle. In the time I've driven it, I didn't use it much. But, I could see the potential in making a couple of videos on regenerative braking. I'll keep that on my radar!

Technology Connections

I'd like to see a video on the Chevy Volt's regenerative braking. I can't seem to find one explaining in real detail how it works with the paddles and how to optimally use it to get maximum regeneration.

The shelves are good, and you're right, the lighting needs work. You might consider led strips - I display all my 'ornaments' (vintage vacuum tubes, magnesium flashbulbs, an X-ray tube, vacuum relays, photomultiplliers, vidicon tubes etc.) under cool white led strips and the multiple point light sources work well. IMHO, a set beats green-screen, which I find distracting as it looks like a backdrop. Nothing like real toys that you could go and pick up. And what's this white ball under your eye - I never noticed that.. You can bet I'll be rewatching some of your earlier videos ;-)

C41 film development isn't as bad as it looks as long as you keep the temperatures right (if you shift temperatures too much you get colour shifts). B&W is way easier! I used the Tetenal kit and it worked out nicely.

Hi! I few comments: 1) I like the shelves, but I don't think it has to be one or the other (green screen); a little variety may keep things interesting? 2) I agree with the comment above about the color being too dark, but maybe it can be fixed with lighting? 3) A few ideas for future shows: a) old computer network technologies (coax cables, for example, or even old fiber optics networks like FDDI) b) old internet technologies (before web: gopher, IRC, etc.) c) weather technologies (how they have evolved?) d) old satellite technologies. 4) Keep doing an amazing job!

Like the shelves, love the jacket, but I wonder if the wall color is too dark or too cool a tone. Not entirely friendly to those of us with Midwestern sunless winter Vitamin D deficiency. Mr. Sun... where did you go? I miss you...

Bill Huizinga

I figured you were making a Bubba Watson comparison, but upon further inspection it seems I have quite the doppelganger!

Shelves look good. Camera topic sounds interesting. Keep doing what your doing, and thanks for all the great content.

Congrats on hitting it big!! I lol'ed at stop the hammering - should have added a 'f-- it, we'll do it live!!!" too haha. My advice for topics is find things that interest you or that you question, and then share with us. Now go do your homework!!!!! ;-)

I like the new set. I feel it will be more welcoming and befitting your character. I like the AC idea as well. Maybe tie it in with refrigerators as I assume it's the same technology.

I just wanted to be the first to say: Congratulations on winning the Masters! :P

I want to move away from the green screen simply because it slows everything down. In the beginning of the channel, that background was a real set. I moved to green screen out of necessity because that set was taken down in preparation for my parents selling their house. Then I just kept on using it! Also not mentioned in the video is that I was using a new 25mm f/1.7 prime lens--Now that I have more space I can use a fast fixed focal length lens. That helps, I think, when using a background like this. My previous lens had very little bokeh, and needed quadruple the light!

Technology Connections

Yes definitely!

What a small world! Our property just went through a networking upgrade last fall. It was actually kind of a mess, because we were the first property of our brand for this company. They had never dealt with our PMS and it was apparently quite the ordeal to get the interface set up. For the first week or so we were just running as one giant password protected network, and I could see a Chromecast on there via my phone! Then they finally had the last name/room number interface working and (thankfully) the new company has proven more reliable than the last!

Hey there , congrats, I would be interested in the a/c stuff and also refrigeration , the history of it including the various refrigerants, I did refrigeration and a/c for 35 years , if you did all that I think it might would be a series of videos. (Ie Mr carrier and the printing plant kind of thing ect) but go for it . Have a great day . This is a big step for you , well it would be for me ...drew

I prefer the set to the green screen (those sharp, abstract backgrounds are weird). Sorry but I also really dislike the jump cuts, a complete no-no in TV production; cover them with a still, diagram or B-roll. They are worse of course when done with green screen because the background does not move! When you change shots on a set, the background changes as well so that's far less noticeable. Also prefer cuts to fast mixes; there is nothing more invisible to your audience than a well-timed cut. These comments are all of course about the video production not your content or style which is engaging, entertaining and informative. Look at my user name on YouTube you will understand the video comments! :-) https://is.gd/O_V_P Keep at it Alec, you're doing brilliantly.

Okay, I'm really lookin' forward to that air conditioning video. Is there a chance we might see a heat pump video as a follow-up to that? =D

Ketafuki

oooh, i'm excited for that air conditioning video, I've always been strangely fascinated with HVAC even though I know that really A/C's operating principle isn't all that complex. Could you do maybe a rundown of different types, like heat pumps vs evaporators vs compressor units? And maybe the history of artificial air conditioning could be good too, I think people might be interested in the early system installed in movie theaters that basically took up the entire basement, or the extremely steampunk-looking first generation window units if you could get your hands on one.

Congratulations, that's fantastic that you're able to do this full time now!

Technology ideas: My day job is project managing Wi-Fi (in hotels, no less) installations. My side job is doing repairs for digital cinema installations. People ask me pretty much every day about how both of these technologies work. I'd be happy to assist in either of these areas if you decide to pursuit one of them.
